Joe Murray, creator of Rocko's Modern Life, is working on a new series for Cartoon Network called Camp Lazlo, the network announced today. The show will follow the quest of a monkey named Lazlo to earn merit badges at Camp Kidney, a camp for Bean Scouts. Lazlo's cabin-mates are Raj, a "reluctant, compulsive Indian elephant" and Clam, an "eccentric, misfit, genius, albino pygmy rhino." Joe Murray is the creator and co-producer of the series. The other co-producer is Mark O'Hare, writer and storyboard artist on Rocko and SpongeBob SquarePants.

The series has an initial order of 26 episodes and is set to premiere on CN's Fridays block in July.
Looks like some of Rocko's voice cast are doing this one too, including Tom Kenny (Heffer), Carlos Alazraqui (Rocko) and Joe Murray (Ralph Bighead) himself.

Who knows whether this will be as fun or zany as Rocko's Modern Life, but I'm definitely going to make note of this one and check it out.

Awesome, loved Rocko's Modern Life as a kid and I bet I'll love this (if I ever get a chance to watch it).

So far so good, I'll jump on board. Maybe Clam the "eccentric, misfit, genius, albino pygmy rhino" will be a Scientologist - that would rock. o.

Here's a little more info for those interested.
The voice cast will include Tom Kenney (SpongeBob SquarePants, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends) as the voice of moose scoutmaster Lumpus and his assistant Slinkman, a banana slug, Carlos Alazraqui (Fairly OddParents) as Lazlo and Clam the rhino, and Jeff Bennett (Johnny Bravo) as Raj the elephant.

Filling out the ensemble of characters will be Edward the Platypus, the Dung Beetles, the Loon Brothers, Samson the Guinea Pig and the rival campers across the lake, the Squirrel Scouts.

Michael Ouweleen, creative director at CN, made the announcement. When asked why Murray had stayed away from animation for so long, he attributed it to exhaustion after Rocko. Ouweleen suggested that SpongeBob was the "godchild" of Rocko and expected that fans of the former will definitely want to tune in to Camp Lazlo. The show will feature artists who formerly worked on SpongeBob as well as Futurama and Family Guy, and underground comic artist Kaz (Kazimieras G. Prapuolenis) will contribute storyboards to the series, Ouweleen said.

Awesome! :D Rocko was always one of my favorite cartoons. Right up there with the Simpsons, imo. :) And surprisingly intelligent given its intended audience.

Here's to hoping Camp Lazlo is just as good!
