Can Final Fantasy XI survive... even on 360?

I haven't been keeping up with FFXI news/info in the last year, but I do know a lot of people that have quit, never to return. These range from the nubs that never got beyond lv.25 ( like me :D), to some that got as high as the mid 60's and just got worn out.

With WoW steamrolling, is FFXI still drawing players to Vanadiel?

On top of that, as we all know by now, FFXI will be making it's way to X360 sometime next year (spring?)... but will it even matter any more? Will those of you getting a X360 (not the retard pack) and have never played FFXI take the plunge and try it? With those that have played it reinvest for a more souped up version?

I tend to wonder if the release of FFXI on 360 is a latch ditch effort for Square to make a profit before they completely retool the game and make a FFXI-2 (possibly for PS3?) Then again, FFXI might still have a very strong community for all I know and the 360 version will simply be another way to further expand that.
What do you guys, particularly those of you currently playing FFXI, think? How many of you getting a 360 in the next year plan to get FFXI?

I don't think the 360 will draw any new players in, but the game itself is doing just fine suscriber wise. Growth has been cut into by WoW and even EQ2, but there's enough to balance off the usual MMORPG dropoff. A Superstrong Japan presence really helps lift their numbers, wonder if WoW is going to be released there at all.

But yeah, the 360 version is a dumb idea that won't sell well AT ALL. But hey, you gotta get your nose bloodied once or twice;)

The x360 version will be the 3rd time that I will buy the game. I recently picked up the pc version(2nd time) in anticipation of the x360 ver. and plan on playing it for a while.
First time 'round, my character was a 60 or so blm; I'm going melee now as a samurai. Still fun to me but leveling does take a while...I'm in no hurry.

european gamers can only play FFXI on PC, so now they can get FFXI on Xbox 360 ... so probably new gamer in Europe. On other countries probably not.

I thought I read something recently that said it was still doing very well subscriber-wise? My PC kinda sucks, so I might actually pick up the 360 version.

I wonder how many FFXI 360 owners are going to recoil in shock when they see that the game install just took up almost half of their hard drive? With FFXI, RoZ and CoP installed on my PS2, it was just over 9 gigs.

Square (or someone) needs to make a non-HD reliant MMO, I want to see if it'll work. Other, cheaper large capacity storage now will make updating and patching easier, such as memory sticks or even the Rev's internal flash memory.

Its doing ok, still in the top 5 if I remember right...

still somehow finding enough people to keep bored

the game is absolutely gorgeous and the world is vast... the game really has great foundation work, I think. Square just needs to make it a bit more 'fun' for the non-hardcore (by that I mean make the world easier to explore/adventure) and tweak the gameplay so that people can solo more efficiently. Then again, some of the serious FFXI gamers might hate those additions...

I've wanted to get into the game, and hearing that the Xbox 360 version would be enhanced sounded like the time to do it, but because it requires a hard drive, and MS is pricing the 360 with HD a hundred more than I expected, I guess I'll just have to wait until their prices get a bit more sane. (I don't really want to reward MS's greedy pricing, anyway. I know there'll be a large group of people who buy the console at almost any price, but I wonder if a lot of the casual gaming public will go for those prices.)

But hey, if I win a 360 in that Pepsi "Every 10 Minutes" contest, I'll pick FFXI up for sure. :P

With FFXI only behind WoW and the two Lineages at 750k subs (as of June 05), I think it's doing just fine.

FFXI isn't going anywhere.

Just to pump up you x360 fans who have never played, and because I just got a new PC - here are some screens I recently captured! (damn I need to get fraps FFXI's internal screen cap sucks)

getting ready to get owned (heh doombringer is not the doom_bringer here^^)

:D

edit: in regards to grouping, I guess I have a somewhat slanted view being a high demand job, but I never have a problem. FFXI is a social game and if you are the type of person that turns to a total asshat in an online game, then yeah - noone is going to want to group with you. Recently I've been partying with this cool guy that lets me borrow his scorpion harness every time we exp. If you don't play you probably don't know what that is, but trust me its a 5 million gill peice of gear that this guy trusted me enough to hand over.
