Can NOT get PC to recognize Xbox 360 using Media connect

Okay, I've used both the Xbox 360 themed installer, and the vanilla Media Connect 2.0 installer on my Windows XP SP2 PC, and no matter what I do, the PC will NOT see the Xbox. I've opened every port on my router MS said needs to be open, they're on the same subnet (192.168.1.XX), and the PC can never see the Xbox. What do I need to do?

I just installed Windows Media Connect on my XP SP2 PC... God I hope I dont run into this problem when I get my 360....

I hate PCs

I just made the exact same thread 4 minutes ago :lol

I did a search for 'Media connect'

Also, the program itself gives me errors if I don't finish the process because I can't see the Xbox (and it can't see the PC either). Wanna stick to this thread or the other?

This one's getting posts.

My 360 is recognizing my computer, it says the login name, but when I try to connect it just won't connect. I run the test and it just says failed. It says its a problem with the firewall, but I turn off my firewalls and the problem persists. (shrugs)

Like I said in that other thread, it's probably your .NET framework that needs updating. I had the same problem until I updated the .NET framework to the 1.1 version. Afterwards, I reinstalled PC Connect, and then no problems.

.NET thingy is an optional download in the Windows update.

Correct.

.Net framework ftw!!!

Its solving probably 90% of the problems people are having trying to connect. Microsoft didn't make it very clear that you need to have this installed also.

Thank you. I'll do that now.

It didn't work. I installed Framework 2.0, and tried to install the Xbox 360 specific media connect, and it still didn't work. I'm going to uninstall, reboot, and install the 'real' Media Connect 2.0.

I notice I DO get an error that Media connect might not be installed properly, any idea what that's about when I'm just doing the normal installation?

Try Framework 1.1.

I am thinking there's something else wrong here. I installed Windows Media Connect, then immediately went to run it, and it said this:

'Windows Media Connect could not be started. There may be a problem with the installation".

However, it let me choose folders to share, then started running, with a message that

"Folder sharing is not started" (and told me how to enable it).

I went to enable the folder sharing, in case that might help, then it said

"Folder sharing could not be started. For details, use Event Viewer in Windows to check the log of system events".

And of course, it couldn't see the Xbox 360 at all, and vice versa.

The Xbox 360 'Media connection' test thing also always shows 'Failed' for the Computer connection, even with WMC running.

Is the installation instantly getting corrupted or something?

1. Uninstall your current Media Connect via Control Panel > Add or remove programs.
2. Make sure you have .NET framework 1.1 version.
3. Download the proper "PC Connect" version of media connect for X360 from XBox.com.
4. Run the "XboxXPSP2-ENU.exe"
5. follow the set up menu during the install
6. Stream music and pictures to your X360!

Okay, I checked the event viewer, and that error seems to just be bitching that I'm trying to start folder sharing without the 360 being connected:

"The Windows Media Connect Service service depends on the Universal Plug and Play Device Host service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. "

Okay, I had 1.1 when I started, do I need to uninstall 2.0? When I just had 1.1 I got an error that the Xbox 360 cold not be located, using the program you're referring to.

Best thing you can do is uninstall version 2.0 and install 1.1 from fresh. It's the only way to solve problems related to applications that rely on it.

You know what? I just checked and apparently have 1.1 and 2.0 intalled on my machine. Now I'm pretty damn confused.

Check your add/remove programs to see if Windows Media Connect is currently installed. You might have to uninstall it if it got messed during intallation or something. Also, check in the START > Programs and see if it's there. If you see it, launch it, set it up, and then uninstall it to start all over.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled it like 500 times. There's something just NOT allowing the Xbox 360 or PC to see each other, and I have NO Idea what. I have disabled the router firewall completely, and still NOTHING.

*sigh*

Windows media connect is uninstalled, and I've uninstalled 1.1, and 2.0 of .Net, lemme reboot, install 1.1 again, and try again.

I am getting extremely frustrated, I spent 2 hours on the phone with Linksys making sure it wasn't my router, and it's IMPOSSIBLE to get through to MS (Not that it helped, I was running through a freaking HUB before and it still didn't work, MS just says hubs aren't supported, but there's no reason 2 devices on the same hub shouldn't be able to see each other)

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON???

I can give you a remote assistance through MSN Messenger if you'd like. My email is joaopovoa@msn.com

I am extremely trustable in these matters.

One other thing. It could be possible that your Xbox360 ethernet cable is damaged. Have you tested it with other equipment?

My X360 is connected via hub > router so that shouldn't be an issue. Honestly, I am stumpted. Unless you have something like Norton Internet Security that tends to blcok every damn network sharing connections, I have no idea what's causing your problems.....

Nikashi said:
Okay, my router can definitely see both connections, Xbox is at 192.168.1.100, and PC is at 192.168.1.101.

Nikashi, i have a great solution for you to know if the problem is software related to your PC. Boot your PC in Safe mode with network (2nd option in the boot menu that shows up when you press F8 before Windows XP boots by itself) and if it works from there it's definately some software in your PC that's blocking communication.

I don't know if .Net Framework works in safe mode though, but give it a try!

Nothing.

I am defeated. No streaming for me. Stupid PC can't even see a machine ONE IP ADDRESS AWAY. They might as well be in different countries.

I had the same problem. No matter what I did my XP SP2 PC would not recognize the 360, and the test failed everytime, too.

I know this is somewhat obvious and possibly insulting, but have you tried choosing either Stream Photos or Stream Music (or whatever the proper names are - I haven't been able to find any pics of the dash. I wish I still had a 360 so I could check myself) instead of the Media Center or the test? Cuz that's how I finally got it working. Totally dumb. I kept trying to connect using everything but those two.

Can you at least connect to live with the Xbox360. At least we would know it's not an Xbox360 configuration problem.

Yes, the Live connection is perfect, blazing fast downloads, good netplay, had a great Halo 2 session last night on the 360.

I have Media connect running on the PC, and I did just try to 'stream media' both pictures and music, and the Xbox wasn't able to see the PC either.

You know what? Fuck this shit. I shouldn't have to reinstall half my OS just to make my PC see another machine on the same fucking subnet. Fuck you MS.

Maybe - like the message says - the Universal Plug and Play Host service is disabled (because of tweaking WinXP?). Go to 'Start', 'Run' and type 'services.msc'. In the list scroll down to that service and enable it or choose 'manual'.

Something like that.

Ooh, you may be on the right track. Now, that didn't work, but I got this error:

"Error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start"

If you doubleclick on 'Universal Plug and Play Host'-service in 'services.msc', there's a 'dependencies' tab. It says the service is dependant on the services 'HTTP' and 'SSDP Discovery-service'. Enable them too (manual).

Does that fix the problem?

YES!! I got it to work! Your solution worked (although I grabbed it from another website as soon as you got me on the right track!)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

YAY!!!! I CAN SEE THE XBOX 360! IT CAN SEE THE PC!\

Edit: I only had to enable 'SSDP Discovery-service' to get the UPnP to work.

Oops. Didn't realize there was a recent thread on this. I'll close mine.

Anyway, I'm using a Linksys switch, have done everything in this thread, finally had Windows Media Connect recognize my Xbox 360 on the network, but now I can't get the Xbox 360 to recognize the connection on the PC. :(

Should I try downgrading to .NET 1.1? Could that possibly help?

i've had no success at all no matter what i've tried, unintalled and reinstalled so many things, but the windows media connect service just starts then stops a few seconds later...

I'm totally at a loss for what could be the problem. God damnit. I just want to stream the musics! I can't even do the videos! Argh! Damn you quirky network errors!

haha you think you're at a loss?

i literally spent a whole afternoon uninstalling, reinstalling and googling about wmc and .net and the shit still didnt work...

why the fuck couldn't they just use their already existing file sharing protocol? at least it fucking works!

:lol I've learned the hard way this last month that 90% of the problems that I have with Windows XP come from when I was a smart ass and decided to go into services.msc and decide for myself which XP services I needed and didn't. All I can say is that just following that old "black viper" list is not the smartest thing in the world. The only thing that old black viper list is good for is just helping me to remember what the default settings were for services.msc

This is a good question. SMB works perfectly fine for me for network sharing between computers and Xbox Media Center. I haven't had any troubles with media connect, but it is still annoying to have to have yet another service running in the background and to not be able to just click on the folder you want to share and say share. I guess the problem might be that they figure that you don't want to share everything that is on your computer network with your Xbox 360. The Media Connect service at least allows you to specify exactly which devices you want to be able to see the shared content.

yeah or they could support both...

sometimes i see strokes of genius, other times i wonder what the fuck they're thinking...

i need help too

I have 2 PCs, I got 1 connected to 360, but 1 isn't. All 3 connected to a hub, my 360 can read files from 1 PC but not the other. When I look at the properties on Media connect, the only difference is that on the PC that isnt connected to 360, the DRM says "Cannot play protected Windows Media files" while on the other PC, it says "Can play protected Windows Media files". not sure if that's the problem, but help!
thanks

[edit]
apparantly u can only connect 1 PC at a time...had to turn off the connection to the first one and change to the other one to get it to work...:(
oh well

Bizarre. Setting up a home network via the control panel is what finally unlocked the door from my Xbox 360 --> my PC. Now, though, I can't paly any music! It can read the music off the computer fine, but it gives a little red stop sign whenever I try to stream anything.

EDIT: Nevermind! Simply had to run the setup program from xbox.com/pcsetup again and it fixed everything. Woo hoo! Now if only I could stream video. :\
