Can we talk about Witness? - a 1985 film starring Harrison Ford and Viggo Mortensen

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
What do you think the % of people that are now 17 will have watched Sense and Sensibility in the next 10 years?

The Oscars are not the only metric for a good movie.

Ok but for someone who says they are a well watched film maker and has seen all the world has to offer cinematically it seems to be a weird blind spot to have and we aren't talking about 17 year olds watching Sense and Sensibility, we are talking about you! Or to be blunt and straight forward, you've got a fairly shitty attitude now that people aren't just going along with your opinion on a movie from the 80's.

Sad we didn't get any more movies in the Aubrey-Maturin (Master and Commander) series. I really liked Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany as those characters. :(

Look at it this way: it gets to be a great movie that will never be tarnished by sequels.

Over time Master and Commander has probably become my favorite Weir film, but I've always had issue getting into his early Aussie stuff. The Last Wave and Picnic at Hanging Rock just left me alternatively annoyed, confused, and bored, with flashes of interest. There's a lot I like in them but they feel more like art school pieces that haven't gelled into a final picture.

It's pretty cool that he's done such a wide variety of films from the more "arty" side of things to more "conventional" films like The Witness and the like, though. I look forward to his films because I don't entirely know how things will be handled.

It's been a very long time since I saw it but I remember it being a really good movie... As others said, Oscar nominated and shit.

Me and my friends weren't in the mood for watching a thriller so we watched it and picked apart scenes and laughed because pack behaviour.

It probably hasn't dated too well, it's a little high concept and a I doubt the cops being the bad guys has the same impact now. Still a classic though.

To each their own but at least it left an impression, so many recent movies I feel indifferent to and are forgettable. Also didn't realize Viggo was in this, he really should be in more movies.

I haven't seen it in quite some time but I rather liked it when I did. I think the pace of older movies can be a bit off putting compared to stuff today, and can seem languid in comparison.

This fucking film was EVERYWHERE.

It's a very decent film and the script is solid, but holy hell did the lecturers and tutors love it. I have seen it far too many times now. I have read the script too many times.

I totally get why it's a good example of the craft but I'd take the vast majority of those hours back considering how little I got out of the academic obsession with this film.

Get off your high horse. This isn't me being a 20 year old shithead from LA that can't function without the MCU. I'm a 27 year old filmmaker and have seen all the classics, both from US and the rest of the world. 7 of my top 10 fav. movies are pre-1980 and include thrillers, courtroom dramas, animated films, sci-fi and war movies.

Witness is cliché fish out water story that goes back and forth between being a rejected Lethal Weapon script and a long Monty Python sketch and never finds a tone that works.. This should've been a Tom Hanks comedy.

I couldn't help but chuckle at this.

Yeah I was shown this in a Film Studies class in high school. We ended up writing a few essays about it.

"C'mon, what am I gonna do? Just all of a sudden jump up and grind my feet on somebody's couch like it's something to do? Come on. I got a little more sense then that.
...Yeah, I remember grindin my feet on Eddie's couch."

Your misguided "I am an expert" pose makes you look even more ridiculous than your first pose. Give it up.

I'm not taking anything personally but that was a shitty post I was answering. He basically said that if I don't like Witness I must young and therefore I have a terrible taste in movies. That makes no sense. I wasn't expecting everybody to agree with me but I expected a discussion. I made my points about why I didn't like it and I've got a reply thats tell me to go to hell. From the posts in this thread you'd think this movie was mostly about building a barn.

Context is important. If someone claims something about me that is wrong I will correct it if I can/want. I never said it made me right.

I've already addressed this

Please read the thread before posting.

Thank you.

I honestly miss films like this. Doesn't feel like we get many adult focused R-rated thrillers these days. Seems like that stuff has transitioned to TV.

So it's fine to dislike this film, but trying to break it down to such a simple level is really a great disservice to the overall concepts at work within it. I think that's the problem most in this thread are likely having with your aggressive opinion on it, Strax.

Quoting this because it's a great couple lines that boils it down.

It's fine to not like a movie and say you don't like a movie. It's another thing to not really backup an argument as to why it's "bad" or "good" or whatever you view of a film is. Then it's a step further to not really bother with that and prop yourself up as knowledgable before really having anything to say. If you're going for comedy I don't think it worked.

Give us an argument. Show us why it's bad. I'm down for thoughtful analysis with a new perspective or opinion (I love Pauline Kael for that very reason, I disagree with her stuff quite a lot but appreciate reading it), especially on a film like Witness that most people tend to like.

Thanks for this thread OP. I was 5 when this was filmed down the street from my grandfather's farm (he wasn't Amish, but his second wife was Mennonite). So, I always knew it very well, but never had a good sense of how people outside the honestly appraised it.

Nailed it. Witness is a fine film. Sorry, OP.

As its a great film superbly helmed by Weir id say you and your friends clearly haven't the faintest idea what constitutes a good film OP.

Not that you have to like it. But you sure ain't no experts in the medium if you think this career highlight for Ford is a bad film.
