Ok, I went to a Microsoft game presentation today and one of the perks of attending was a free membership to thestoke.net, a microsoft site dedicated to students who like to program.

Follow these directions:
Go here: http://www.microsoft.com/canada/campustour/events.aspx
Click on any university, except for Univeristy of alberta.
Register and fill out the survey, at the end they'll give you an promotion code for premium membership at http://www.thespoke.net/ , go there and register. Click on premium service, register for that and enter that promotion code you were given. Now you'll have access to promotions, downloads, coupons etc.

do I *actually* have to be canadian?

I'm sure you don't have to. Just enter BS candian info for address and the like. And please people do not register under the University of Alberta, because they do a draw for Halo 2 at each stop, so the less people that register under the U of A, the better chance I have of winning. :D

If you call University of Alberta, then NO ONE USE SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY either! Thank you!

Actually, do you think this will still work if I change my country to the US?

I mean, there's nothing stopping a US student from gonig to a Canadian school, is there?

I got the promo code.

Where the heck do I enter it? I can't seem to find a place at ths site. It let me make a memership and everything, but it never asked for the promo code.

Note to all US citizens: You don't have to fake anything except choosing which college you saw the event at. I used my real address and everything, and it worked.

After you register at http://www.thespoke.net , there should be a link on the left hand side of the page called: the spoke premium. Click on that and register for that, near the bottom it will ask you for the promotion code.

I think I gave the wrong website in the first post.

it's on the left.

Took me awhile to find it, too.

Hmm.. Now I'm trying to register for the premium service, and it's giving me weird crap.

It's being a douche when I try to sign up.

First it jut took me back to the register page when I entered all my info correctly. Then it said my thing was pending, but I never got an email from them.

ok, so wait... how does this get me a free copy of VS .NET 2003?

And they want one of the following:
Your student verification is still pending. You will be notified by email when your notification has gone through.
If you have not sent in your student verification documents already, you can be confirmed by providing us with one of the below:

- A valid student ID, or
- A photo ID and current course schedule or registration statement, or
- A signed letter from your school (on school letterhead) certifying your enrollment

You may provide this information via email to: support@e-academy.com.
-OR-
You may provide this information via facsimile to: (613) 526-3891.
Please ensure you include your first name, last name, and email address when submitting proof of your student status.
---

Can I just scan my student ID card and email it to that address? I don't know what other type of student ID they could be looking for.

Your positive your premium membership went fully through?

Click the premium link on the side. That's where I got the new info about needing a student ID and shit.

EDIT: And how does this end up getting me VS .NET 2003?

Yup, I'm a 110% sure. I even got a confirmation email. When I click on premium service it gives me an option for dicounts and downloads and the likes.

ok, cool.

I'll email them my ID card and see if that works. If not, I don't drive, so I don't have a photo ID. I'll have to get creative.

Well, I'm all through now. This is awesome. I'm kind of interested in theSpoke now. I think I'll be posting often!

How was the talk anyway? A lot of promotional BS, or did they actually talk about interesting stuff? How high-level was the talk? Was it like "here's a pointer!" or more detailed like "The problems with streaming worlds with the viewing frustrum overlapping zone boundaries"

I got this email back form them today:
Entered on 10/07/2004 at 15:47:21 by Martina:
Hi,

I have validated your account. But I have looked into this issue with the
people in charge of this site (The Spoke) and they informed me of the
following:

(1). The only case of the "membership" being free is if the user registers
with the MSDNAA promo code (only for a short time will this be available) -
which you did.

(2). If a user registers with this MSDNAA code there is no software on the
spoke they are eligible for. They will ONLY have access to theSpoke
partners, but will have to get VS through the MSDNAA program. Please
NOTE that You must be a current member of a "MSDNAA" site in order to
use or obtain the Promo Code.

Hope this helps. If you still have questions/concerns please let us know.

Regards,
Martina

Now how the heck do I go about getting VS .NET 2003?

Do you have to be going to one of the schools they're presenting at, or is it open to any post-secondary students?

Oh never mind, it's already passed my city.

This works for anyone interested. I got my copy of VS .NET last night. You just have to give them a scan of your school id/schedule if you're in the US, and you'll get it.

And if the Microsoft link doesn't work any longer, you can still use it to enter in a drawing for Halo 2. joyous all around.

Note to anyone interested: Don't put down a fake address, or a fake college that you attend.

Mine came 2 weeks ago. (I mean, they unlocked the Download link for me)

and no, you don't have to be at the school.
I go to U of Calgary, but I was in Toronto when they toured my campus.
