Capcom enters into cross-licensing agreement with Bandai Namco for online matching

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

Capcom has entered into a cross-licensing agreement with Bandai Namco Entertainment related to online matching in properties such as the Street Fighter series, the company announced.

The purpose of this agreement is to improve the user experience while accelerating the production of titles and reducing development costs for both parties. Further, with this cross-license for online matching, Capcom aims to effectively utilize the patents it has been granted in game series such as Street Fighter in order to deliver even more exciting content to game players.

With this agreement as a starting point, Capcom will continue to explore cross-licensing opportunities in order to safeguard its patents while improving the user experience and contributing to a healthier game industry.

Fun Fact: Bamco didn't pay any money to Capcom in order to get Akuma in T7. Bamco holds multiple patents related to training modes in fighting games. Many companies want to use them but they can't due to the fact that they've got the patents. All they had to do is let Capcom use the patents and they got Akuma.

What kind of patents do they hold on the training mode?

Ever notice how Tekken and Soul Calibur lets you select a move or combo from the command list and have the character perform it with button timings shown on screen? Now, do any other fighting games do that, despite it being a good idea?

And that's why the Challenge modes in Capcom games don't have a "Show me!" button.

I'm surprised that's even allowed, really. Just seems like a basic of basic learning tool. Odd to me.

God, Scamco has some dumb patents.

At this rate the entire Japanese game industry is gonna be other companies paying Bandai Namco to make their shit.
Or at least, Japanese companies paying Bamco to use their netcode for every game ever, lol. They snuck into the credits of ARMS, and apparently even Mario Kart 8.

Come the fuck on! Obvious stuff like this shouldn't be patentable.

I can see them doing PC/PS4 and PC/Xbox if Sony is realky stubborn about it and if it isnt much work

Edit: If not and they just dont do Sony at all then people need to light a fire under their ass

So sony is the bad guy now for not wanting people to log in live on PS4? Despite the fact the sony was the first to allow crossplay with pc.

How is that shit patentable? Ridiculous.

Thats kinda ridiculous actually

Not to turn this into a cross play thread like the others so Ill keep it short, people wouldnt be signing into XBL if they used CFN. Sony already has a problem with Rocket League even though you dont need to sign into XBL and the solution id akin to CFN

I wanna know what exactly the companies are exchanging. Bamco gets network tools from Capcom, and Capcom is getting what in return? Licensing fees?

Exactly, I'm wondering as well... it doesn't read as Namco actually "working" on Capcom games' online systems, despite what's been implied on this thread.

And yet Tekken 7 training mode is complete shit compared to the one used in Virtua Fighter 5 Final Shodown

Sounds like the beginning of capcom paying other companies to make stuff off their properties.

Breath of Fire by Square Enix isn't as far away as we think

Is stuff like this also why Namco is thanked in the credits to Arms?

They just seem to have their hand in a lot of fighting games these days.

Except this reads like Bamco is paying to use whatever Capcom has

It actually reads like they're "doing a swap" and getting usage of some Namco patents in return for letting Namco using their online play patents.

Loading screen minigames are BACK, BAYBEEEEEEE

Sounds great. But I don't know what this exactly means. What fighing game related online matching patents does Bamco own?

Maybe related to Tekken vs Street Fighter? Street Fighter x Tekken 2 confirmed?

Why do people think this has anything to do with Cross platform play?
It should be something related to online matches that Namco has and Capcom don't. Not this case SFV already has cross platform play (but it's console exclusive) while Tekken 7 don't (because it's multi).

Harada already said Tekken doesn't have cross platform play because of that: 1st party allow you to make Xbox+PC or PS+PC crossplay but not Xbox+PS. So only console exclusive games can use this.

lol this is ridiculous scamco should be ashamed

Im confused.
It seems, one of the points of the agreement is to make use of patents registered by Capcom (in regards to netplay and matchmaking) to accelerate development and implementation of the networking portions of future developed titles.

Is that it?

Im still not sure what the benefit is other than the tentative reduction of development time.
There is bad stuff in CFN and bad stuff in Bamco's netplay as well, if this means they iron that out and start to use a "standardised" platform for netplay, i am all for it.

This is the same bullshit as playing a different (mini) game while the real game loads up.
And they definitely didn't invent that with Ridge Racer, other games did that way before but they didn't came up with the idea to patent that.

Why did they get a patent on those important things?
They single handedly hugely damaged potential better training modes and loading times for decades.

Didn't that patent expire? Or did they renew it?

I don't give a damn about this!
Just fix the fucking netcode already!
Since they care so much about players experience.
Experience starts with NETCODE!!
I'm fucking sick of this. The fact that everybody just keeps it up with the hype about every frigging article that comes out just irritates the heck out of me.
I mean look at killer instinct, look at mortal kombat xl.
Their netcode is a masterpiece. I play Usa-Albania where my friends live and basically all europe without a single lag. Open sfv..here we go with the WARPS, LAG SPIKES, huge fucking TELEPORTS.
And ya'll keep hyping up for everything else that they say.

But isn't this so both companies can improve net code across the board...

WAIT?! That is patented? That is something that can be patented to prevent other companies from making their own games better? Son of bitch! This has revealed a whole other side to game development that I never new existed.

I don't know about renewing it but they sued companies like those who did DBZ Budukai back in the PS2 days where you were able to circle the stick around which did stuff like show up more Saibaimens on the loading screen screen.

They are the reason why we had to stare at boring loading screens most of the times especially in the PS3 generation.

Nowadays (especially on pc) it's not that relevant anymore but games would've had more interesting things to show up while game loading times.
