Capcom explains lengthy delays for Mega Man: Anniversary Collection (GBA)

Kumiko Nikaido

Vindication...sweet.
Good news: It's still coming.
Bad news: Platform MAY have changed (i.e. GBA to DS!)

From August 05' Play magazine:

Whatever happened to Mega Man: Anniversary Collection (GBA)?

If, by chance, you've been wondering what happened to Mega Man: Anniverasary Collection on GBA (previously called Mega Man Mania), well, there's some good news and bad news. According to the game's producer at Capcom, the reason the game has suffered such lengthy delays (it was due out more than a year ago) is because they had trouble locating the game's original source code, causing programming difficulties and causing portions of code to be rewritten from scratch. However, the producer stated that the game - which includes the Game Boy versions of Mega Man 1 through 5 - is still coming, although he wouldn't confirm that it was still for GBA. A change of scenery to the DS may be in order....

Good news that it wasn't cancelled at all (as rumored). But, I think Capcom should keep it on GBA. Screw the DS... :D

HEY I BET THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT THE SOURCE CODE TO THE OLD GAMES OH SNAP BEATEN

Can't they just put the goddamned ROMs on there and be done with it? The manual's already in black and white, surely it's not a big step for Capcom to have the game be the same way.

how do you lose the source code for a game you're working on?
hang on... this happens in big companies as well? Not only in mediocre wannabe ones like mine? :lol

Sad the DS is ruining yet another good game. :(

:)

Uh, a) how do you know they would be ruining this when it most likely won't change much, and b) what games have they "ruined" by putting on DS.

DS why? you limit your audience..

By the time it comes out (they make it seem not likely this year), GBA will probably be pretty close to dead. Even with more of a userbase, I think they'd rather put it on an alive and well console.

I could've sworn that Sega mentioned that they were lucky to have found the codes to the Genesis Sonic games for Mega Collection. I guess it's possible to lose them for some reason.

Except Mega Collection sports ROM emulation, not ported code. Sonic Jam had ported code on the Saturn, and they added and changed things much like MMGBC will. They added Spindash to Sonic 1, and gave each game a different music use [although this made everything a bit 'eh', as speed up sound needed it's own music file].

Released for GBA = playable on GBA and DS
Released for DS = playable on DS only

I doubt most people are looking for stylus functionality in a collection of Megaman games, honestly. I also think the various incarnations of the GBA all have more comfortable d-pads and buttons than the DS does, which makes it a better fit for 'traditional' games like this. Keep in mind that the GBA Micro's on the way, too, which should revive some interest in the 'close to dead' GBA.

They're taking a game (or multiple games, really), that was designed completely with digital control in mind. Adding any touch functionality will only be a detriment to the experience, to me, and even without it, the DS is a miserable substitute in terms of control and comfortability when compared to either the SP or PSP. And having one screen for the pause menu on top is completely worthless too, imo.

and b) what games have they "ruined" by putting on DS.
Just considering titles that are actually released: Mario 64, Rayman 2, Splinter Cell, Ridge Racer.

Pfft, sorry, but Mario 64? Yes, lack of analog stick sucked, and I didn't like the changes to headline Yoshi (or the slap-dash option-less multiplayer), but the DS version was an improvement over many aspects of the original Mario 64. It was tuned, it was tightened up, it generally looked better, played a bit better (if you weren't uptight about the d-pad and took more than a few seconds to adjust to it, I _never_ flew with the wing cap so easily in Mario 64), and they added more to do.

And many people say the Splinter Cell DS version isn't "ruined," just over-ambitious and didn't think some awkward controls decisions through.

A) They didn't ruin Mario 64. B) They didn't ruin Splinter Cell ANY MORE than they did on N-Gage. Has nothing to do with DS. And you're comparing a couple 3D games to an old 8-bit sidescroller port. Give me a break. They're not actually going to change the controls. At the most, give you a touch screen weapon select, which would be cool.

YOUR SUCH A MORON! HOW CAN YOU USE THE D-PAD FOR MEGAMAN!!!!! ITS UNHEARD OF!!!

What purpose would the DS serve for a Mega Man game? especially an anniversary collection...

i couldnt see the touch screen being used that much....

Keep it on the GBA

Ummm... is Atomic Planet involved in this one? Cuz if so, avoid like the plague...
Nope. It's being made by a small Chinese developer, Hanaho Asia.

Atomic Planet's been kicked out entirely. Both MMX Collection and Capcom Classics are being done internally by Capcom Production Studio 1 afaik.

Touch screen weapon select... would work fairly well except it might take you away from the action.

That would avoid from you having to hit start every time, which takes you out of the action.

My gripe is if they put it on the DS, you cant play the games on the Game Boy Player, which would be the big reason as to why I wanted the collection on the Game Boy and not on the DS.

Besides, like people stated already; you can play the game on both GBA AND the DS. Just put a sticker on it or something.

Ha ha I remember I got flak for criticizing Atomic Planet and poking fun over their errors. It was absolutely ridiculous and sad to see someone take it so offensively. Glad to see Capcom attempting to handle it themselves, however it’s sad to see them completely stumble with the project themselves.

Hah, I _knew_ they were reprogramming/rebuilding the games to get the color work in...

They've already mentioned L and R can switch weapons in previous GBA news, so maybe you'll have your choice.

If they're reprogramming the games, not just emulating, they're more open as to what they can do. I'm sure there'll be an "Original" mode for purists who just want to play GB ROMs, but I'm interested to see what they do with it now. (Though, frankly, I was going to buy it on the GBA as it was.)
