Capcom is working on a Resident Evil 4 remake

RE4 still pretty fun game for being an old one but there can definitely be improvements. The core shooting, moving mechanics can be modernized. The AI and overall difficulty can be raised to accommodate modernization and/or add inherent challenge for veterans. Cutscenes can get better, and I dunno if they would but additional content would also be nice.

Doesn't need a remake, plus it's utterly drenched in Mikami and I don't think Capcom can recreate that even with what's available. Plus I can easily see them cutting out sizable portions of the game while assholes say that's a good thing. Hope this remains just a rumour.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Code Veronica didn't review that well? I remember the opposite, a lot of gaming media were calling it the Dreamcast's killer app, a reason to own the system etc.
This.

Day one if true. I think it's still a great game and really fun to play. It's a shooting gallery, and if they do this I hope they just keep the core gameplay intact, make some fantastic environments and maybe make it a bit more spooky. For once I wouldn't mind them cutting some stuff out, but they have to keep the high points ( of which there are many).

Give me Code Veronica.
I know it has alot of haters but I think the mistakes can be easily fixed in the remake. It has a great setting and decent story, bette than RE3. Its long and what we need from the short RE3 remake too.
Then remake RE4 or 1/0 lol

I know I'm in the minority but I'm hoping for a Switch version that uses the gyro aiming / pointer controls.

RE4 Wii is the best version by a wide margin because of the aiming.

There is no question that RE4 will have cut enemies, bosses, locations, and game modes. No question at all. Remember, RE2R removed the zapping/B scenarios cut, which to me is FAR more important than RE3's Mercenaries. The cuts continued to come with RE3R.

So the question is this:

Will the content being cut from the RE4 remake be replaced with something better or anything at all?

Capcom just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase RE4 Remake for either system, nor will they purchase any of Capcom's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Capcom has alienated an entire market with this move.

Capcom, publicly apologize and cancel the remake of RE4 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
People will probably hate it if it doesn't basically play exactly like the original, down to enemy positions and numbers, items, animation and geometry exploits and shit, lol.

They should just remaster it properly, add well made high res textures, fancy up the character and level geometry and cosmetic details (ie atmospheric effects, particles, leaves, whatever) and lighting while leaving the layouts as is, make every animation 60+fps and otherwise leave it intact.

If they're going to just just remake all of their old games, at least choose one that would really benefit from it, like Code Veronica.

Classic! Haha

But I do think it's fair for fans to criticize this choice after the last two remakes cut a lot of major content. Plus, RE4 is arguably already as perfect as it can be; though, I understand you don't share that opinion.

I will shit myself if Separate Ways or Assignment Ada is missing. I also damn well better still be able to unlock my PRL412 and Chicago Typewriter.

Where did VGC's info originate from? Investor meeting? Random twitter rumors etc?
The dude who wrote the article claims multiple sources straight from the development team told him. Also, he's the chief editor of the entire website if it matters.

I don't consider RE2's zapping system to be a major part of the game's content, and the fully playable gas station area as well as the orphanage more than made up for it.

The missing clock tower and park areas of RE3 were indeed disappointing, still the other reimagined areas (the hospital in particular) were significant improvement.

This part of the article deserves more attention:

However, similar to how 2020’s Resident Evil 3 was directed by company Red Works, Capcom’s internal teams and other external studios are likely to lend significant development resources.

M-Two recently contributed to the development of 2019’s Resident Evil 3, but its role on that game was always intended as a precursor to its main project.

People are giving M-two a lot of unnecessary flack, especially since in the end they turned out not to be the main studio behind RE3. The only thing they need is enough time and budget.

And while this is just personal opinion, I think a lot of RE4 has aged poorly or was never THAT good to begin with.

- The island section sucked and was overly long.
- The QTE sequences were annoying as well.
- Leon's one liners were simply not funny and often made him look like a total idiot.
- The tank controls didn't fit the game's increased focus on action.
- Ashley's babysitting sections were too long as well. Also, I'll be happy if I never hear "LEON HEEEEEEEEEELP" ever again.
- Salazar's robot chase was dumb and didn't fit the setting at all.
- Krauser's final boss fight was frustrating and downright unfair at times.
- The story just wasn't that interesting and felt more suited for a spin-off.

Etc. etc.

The zapping/b scenarios are a major part of RE2. You can't even see the full story, fight all the bosses or see all the locations without it.

I don't think the gas station/orphanage make up for the missing city/factory segments, let alone a feature as big as the B scenarios.

Dude, the hospital in RE3R is fantastic! I still think the game was missing content in the city (should have been more expansive with more puzzles and room for Nemesis to chase you), and the clock tower/park segment would have really filled the awkward void between the Carlos RPD section and the 2nd Nemesis fight, but yes, the hospital was great.

I won't go through every one of your points, but I know a lot of people who share your criticism of the island section, but Leon's one-liners, and the fun banter between characters, is a big part of RE4's personality. Whether it was originally written to be campy or not, I love it.

As for the Salazar robot, I get it, but again, it's part of the weird concoction that is RE4, which is a game that it basically a total mess but somehow adds up to a masterpiece, imo. Whether every idea is a winner or not (I feel most are), you gotta respect the sheer amount of ideas RE4 throws at you, keeping the game feeling fresh during most of its 20 hour campaign. I wouldn't be heart broken when the giant robot is cut, but I would somehow respect Capcom more if they brought it back in the remake, as if they are saying "Yeah, we don't care. We are having fun with this!"

As for the story, I think the fact that it has nothing to do with Umbrella is what makes it so interesting. Adding mystery back to what the creatures are was genius, and also expanded the idea of what an RE game could be. It helps that RE4's cast of characters are probably the most memorable in the series. I'll even include Ashley, who is perfectly annoying, and works as the butt of many jokes (sometimes literally).

Time for a hot take.

RE4 is overrated as fuck and unlike RE3 can actually benefit from more serious tone and significant trimming of its second half.
Preach!
Cut that goddamned island altogether (but keep the regenerators), shorten the castle and double the length of the village.
Every time I feel like replaying Resident Evil 4 I remember the latter part of the castle and the island and then the feeling is gone.

I don't mind, that dude is working on his texture pack so I'll have an HD original. There's no way they can improve that much on the original, seems like a waste of resources.

Hmm. Resi 4 still stands up as a modern action game, I'm not sure there's any point remaking it. At least with the older games you can see why they'd want to update them.

I'd be much more interested by a Code Veronica remake.

Resident Evil 4 is one of my favorite games. I think Code Veronica or Dino Crisis would benefit more from a remake.
I do hope they improve Ashley's character though. She was the most annoying thing about the game, and is my second most hated character in the entire franchise. Steve from Code Veronica takes first place.

I agree with the people saying RE4 doesn't really need a remake... yet. But on the other hand, a remake of RE4 is almost guaranteed to print infinite money - which they can then use for Dragon's Dogma 2.

It goes further than that

The whole game is based with how Leon moves. A more fast paced game, like it is today, needs more wide areas to compensate the number of enemies. QTE was kinda new back then, but now could work just some parts - and Krauser is not one of then. Just doing the exactly same game is no better than a new remaster port.

Also, RE4 is a long game, and in times when development is expensive as hell, everyone expect something here and there to be cut. Can you imagine the first chapter with no dog?! Fuck this game

I agree, and suppose due to te aforementioned cuts, El Gigante, Flyes, and ( though I hope not, they're incredibly iconic) maybe regeneradores, and lake monster, some cqc moves, and cringy - but friggin awesome - scenes like the laser acrobatic ones are all at risk

They can remove firearms wielding enemies without a problem, tho lol, they were absolutely terrible

Blind head cutter, regeneradores, verdugo, krauser fight on the elevator etc. , please don't cut anything but military ganados, Capcom 😢

Oh, and Also, PLEASE expand on Luis, I was playing re4 two Days ago on ps4, and tought I'd have liked to know much more about it, great character terribly wasted

I find it disheartening that people feel every RE game needs to play just like RE2R and RE3R.

The RE games always offered so much variety in play styles from title to title. Learning that people will ONLY play RE1 or RE4 once it 100% conforms to the exact playstyle of the two latest remakes shows how willing people are to experience anything out of their comfort zone.

If anything, I think it would be interesting if RE4 was remade in a fixed camera style. Do the reverse, and offer something completely new. I think the RE3.5 style of fixed camera, but over the shoulder when aiming, would really offer something new. Heck, this could encourage new players to try out the classic games rather than immediately dismissing them because mainstream gaming media has told them that tank controls/fixed camera are objectively bad--a sentiment I find as stupid as saying side-scrollers/2D are objectively outdated and inferior to 3D.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Surely I'm not in the minority In believing this is good news?
I'm cautiously hopeful. The series has been inconsistent after 4. 5 was a turd, 6 was good, Revelations was excellent, Revelations 2 was garbage, 7 was good. Not to mention the spinoffs that seem to have been hated and quickly forgotten. I haven't played the remakes yet, but it's going to be hard to recapture the tone and quality of 4. We're talking about remaking one of the greatest games ever made, that's not a small task.

Resident evil 4 is pretty much perfect already. That's why I'm not against a remake.Because whatever they decide to do with this I will always be able to return to the original.

Best possible scenario is they acknowledge that, and do a parallel remake with a totally different tone

AN horror / survival horror oriented one, with a darker tone, harder, so you can Always play both and always play two different PoV of similar events

Would be crazy
I'd have liked a Dino Crisis return more than anything, but now that Re4 remake is real, we have no choice other than accept it, fantasize on how it could be, and pray for the best

I'm hyped. Capcom has been hitting these remakes out of the park and I really want to see RE4 is glorious PS5 graphics. They don't need to change much with the gameplay, but I would appreciate a less cheesy presentation of the story. There were parts that wouldn't mesh well with hyper realism of the RE engine.

It absolutely can.

RE7, DMC5 and RE3 are proof that you can have hammy, over-the-top anime cheese, and it can still work perfectly fine in the RE Engine.
