Capcom has made a bold prediction.

Prepare for a lot of DLC and social/mobile games.

GDC 2012: Capcom says over 50% of revs will come from digital by 2017
Capcom, one of the longstanding publishers that has been reliant on packaged retail sales for decades, sees a majority of its revenue and operating profits coming from digital sooner rather than later.

“I’d like to say that within five years, certainly well north of 50 percent of our revenue will be coming from digital, and significantly higher than [50 percent] of our operating profit will [come from digital],” predicted Christian Svensson, SVP of Capcom Entertainment in an interview with Gamasutra during GDC 2012.

“And certainly sometime before five years from now, every game will be digital and retail day and date [same release],” he added. “On some platforms that’s already the case, it is on Vita. In Europe, the PlayStation 3 is already that way. I wish it were that way in the States as well. But I’d say that’s an inevitability. No one is really fighting that, but the question is when that will occur.”

Svensson added, “Retail will always have a place in our future, but I think that five years down the road, the value proposition of retail and publishers will change.

“I think that retail’s role will shift from planned purchase to impulse purchase, predominantly, and planned purchases will increasingly happen online, just for sheer convenience’s sake.”

Gamasutra's full interview with Svensson will be published in the near future.

If they're willing to make 12 characters out of 50 on the disc as DLC, I'm not surprised.

Makes sense given their current direction. I'm sure their next fighting game will have two playable characters at launch and DLC the rest + various costumes and such.

capcom is the only japanese dev that gets it, too bad they it the wrong way

more digital distribution less unlocks keys please

Well I believe Nintendo confirmed that they will be offering digital and physical media releases for full console games with the Wii U. So it makes sense that most of the console manufacturers will be pushing much further digitaly. It sucks that they will likely cost the same as a physical release though.

Will it be already in the disc?

You are already in the disc.

"bold"?

How far behind The PC and mobile space do you think consoles will be 5 years from now? DD is pretty much already the standard everywhere else.

I guess increased digital means they can edit their mistakes easier than retail releases. How sly of CAPCPOM.

Predictable Capcom is predictable. Next, they'll want to move one of their classic franchises to western studios and
alternate (universe) them
.

Hey CapCpom and Sven, stop being douchebags with crappy DRM and on disc DLC and then we can talk about purchasing your trash. Until then, boycott is still a go.

The problem is entitled gamers who don't realize the developer has budgeted the other 90% of the content as DLC from the beginning. If they didn't plan that DLC their next fighting game would only have two playable characters. Back in the NES days we'd pay $70 for a fighting game with 2 completely unique playable characters. Putting the DLC on the disc is a convenience that Capcom didn't need to go out of their way to doing, but bless them for looking out for us.

I know this is satire, but I wouldn't be shocked if someone actually posted that here.

That is a lot of on disk DLC characters.

Darkstalkers IV made by NetherRealm. Get rid of those pesky air dashes and fugly 2D graphics. Also change the art style. The fuck is a Rikuo? Turn that bitch into a shark.

I can't tell any more.

I'm scared that someday these backwards-thinking people will be judges and congressmen, and their "you don't get to own anything" views will become the laws that they think exist now.

But hey, at least I'll be relieved to die someday. Maybe the afterlife isn't Idiocracy.
