Kelly Blue Book

Great resource.

Cars.com

One of my favorite sites to peruse. Use this to see comparable prices and cars.

My opinion... not bad. I would find out what type of driving was done on it as well... what types of maintenance it's had etc. Get as much info about the car's life as possible. They'll be more than happy to provide you with it.

Hang out with Steve.
If you're buying it from a private party, it's roughly $800 or $900 above the Kelly Blue Book value, even if it's in excellent condition. If you're buying it from a used car dealer, it's probably priced about right.

Given the year, make, and mileage, I'd say that's a bit high. Try to swing it for $2500-2700 if you're dead-set on it.

Just checked out my Kelley Blue Book for you:

1996 Pontiac Sunfire, 2-door coupe:

Private Party (good cond.): $2350
Retail (excellent cond): $3825

So the average is roughly $3000 (though it should be noted that the "private party" amount of $2350 is what is reasonable for private owners to expect when they sell the car, so $3000 is quite high). However, the acceptable milage range for 1996 automobiles according to the book is 82K to 87K, so you can quite reasonably ask him to come down in price at least a couple of hundred dollars (since 106K is way beyond 87K, not just "slightly"). Do yourself a favor and buy this book (or a similar one), and have it handy when you go to inspect the car (assuming you haven't already), or during negotiations-- it'll really give you something to fall back on when he becomes stubborn. Just point to the facts. :D

I wouldn't get it.

I'd do a search on www.autotrader.com for Japanese cars with low mileage for $3000. You will find cars like a late 90s Mazda Protoge with 65k miles for around $3k. Hands down, used Japanese cars are better than American. Go Japanese and don't look back.

Don't get that for the sole reason that girls in HS will think it's a big, steaming POS. Negotiate with your parents to find the best available car, and your HS career will be on the way to the top in no time.

Says the man whose family income is > $250K.

Not everybody has parents who can afford to help them out with car purchases or set them up with "jobs" so they can "earn" enough money to pay for their own car, Lonestar. Not to insult you or anything, but you seem pretty blind to certain realities. If he's looking to buy a $3000 car, I'm reasonably certain that merely "negotiating with his parents" is not going to allow him to magically purchase an $8-10K automobile.

Let's be realistic here. If you feel that he should wait until he saves up more money so that he can afford something better, then that's fine-- but your above reasoning (and its implicit justifications, viz. "to be more appealing to girls") is suspect.

All I'm saying is let's be realistic here, please. And try to have a bit more understanding than you seem to. :)

I was mainly joking.

Well cool then, but it's difficult to tell w/o smileys, which is why I pepper my posts with them. :D

Besides, it wasn't entirely outside the realm of possibility that you'd say something like that. ;) :p
