FORT MYERS, Florida (AP) -- An 81-year-old woman preparing to take a test drive at a car dealership hit her husband, a salesman, a car and a tree before running into a wall.

"She must have panicked," said Joe Sica, sales manager at Honda of Fort Myers.

The new Honda Accord shot backward after Dorothy Byrum got behind the wheel and apparently stepped on the wrong pedal Wednesday.

The open car door hit her 88-year-old husband, Robert, and the salesman. Then the car struck the parked car, the tree and the wall. The air bag deployed, and Byrum was not injured.

Her husband was knocked down but was in good condition the following day. The salesman was released after treatment and is expected to be out of work for about a week, Sica said.

The car was written off.

Old people just shouldn't be behind the wheel. At a certain age, they ought to have to pass several physical tests and an eye exam, and they ought to have to do this on a monthly basis.

:lol considering we just ate there a bit back... and man was it crowded... with old folk...

the most suprising part of this article is that an old woman was contemplating buying a Honda Accord, and not an Oldsmobile or Cadillac. Is that even allowed?

Man, thank God she didn't get a Caddy or Olds. I lived in Hallandale, FL for a bit, and it's honestly called, "The City of Retirement". The place was chock-full of oldies, and I even lived across the street from a nursing home. The drivers are just scary. A local station did an expose on this like a decade ago, and just randomly staked out different location around town. Some old guy was just leavcing his apartment to go out. The camera was just sitting there taking in the parking lot, then you see him back out, hitting two cars on the way. He jumped the curb and not just hit, but plowed over this fucking sappling. He drives forward and kills one of the parking signs before leaving. The news crew chased after him, and the dude was just clueless as all hell.

After 65 or 70, you should have to take the driving and eye exam annually. I don't care if seniors have all this voting power, they need this for our own safety. That or raise insurance premiums on the elderly. IMO, they are far worse than any reckless teenager. At least the kid has a chance to slow down. Old folks can't speed up their reflexes. PEACE.

It's a stupid old woman like her that hit my friend and killed him. She should immediately have her license revoked never to be returned.

Simply having their licenses expire when they hit a certain age (somewhere between 60-70) seems a bit less extreme. Then they have the option to apply for their provisional license and do the tests again. I imagine a large majority would be deemed too dangerous for the road.

Jan de Vos is 77 years old. Although sprightly and active she has a neck injury which means she is unable to use public transport. As Jan is not a car driver, this would make necessary trips to Frimley Park Hospital extremely difficult for her - were it not for the volunteer drivers at Yateley Neighbourcare.

More programs should exist that allow community-based transportation. Often family members and society neglect the elderly. Some day, I hope to be elderly, and I'll still be making you guys laugh.

A personal story: I was driving away from university one day getting to hwy 35, and an 85yr young retired General's wife zooms across traffic, across a four-lane plus one turning lane roadway. I saw her come from a resturant parking lot on my left, straight across and in front of me, leaving me no choice but run straight into her right passenger side. The officer that arrived and talked to me explained that she probably shouldn't be driving, and he would write the accident up on a "blue slip" which doesn't count as a ticket but serves insurance's purposes for who is at fault. The clincher? She and her female passenger were crossing the street to get to the hearing-ait store. Kid you not.

All in all, I'm more worried about young drivers hopped up with hormones and cell phones up their asses. I see them all around my college campus. Those are really the ones that make me run for the hills.

I was only taking into account that there are some people in thier 60-70s that are in pretty good shape for thier age. So yeah, what you suggest with the possibility of exceptions if you pass certain capability tests.

But if you wear diapers, you can't drive period. How can we trust somebody to control a vehicle when they can't even control thier own bowels.

Old people should be herded into labor camps to make food and clothing for deprived children. Then we'll use their bodies for fuel!

fun fact: legislation that restricts the rights of old people is extremely unpopular because OLD PEOPLE VOTE

heres hoping we have auto drive hover cars by the time im old enough to drive a car through a wall on a test drive

Once again, Fart, you hit the nail on the head. Such legislation wouldn't be popular amond the elderly.

Restricted cell phone use legislation (while operating a motor vehicle) makes more sense.
