Hang out with Steve.
First car: 1971 Buick Electra 225, purchased in 1982. Had a 455 V8. Mine was gold with a white vinyl top.
1980 Plymouth Horizon, purchased in 1983. Mine was deep, deep blue.
1986 Honda CRX SI, purchased in 1986. My first new car. Mine was white like this, had more Porsche-like wheels and the letters "CRX" in large print on the doors. No red stripe.
1988 Mazda MX-6 GT, purchased in 1988. Needed more room. Mine was white and was a GT (this one's an LX). Had the turbo, rear spoiler, etc.
1990 Ford Explorer Sport, purchased in 1989. Got stuck in the snow one too many times in the MX-6. Plus, I was doing a LOT of outdoor activities, camping, hiking, caving, etc. and wanted something with some off-road capabilities. It was EXACTLY like this one:
In 1992 I got married, and my wife had a 1984 VW Rabbit similar to this one, although it was white:
1993 Ford Explorer Sport, purchased in 1993. The '90 had developed some issues, so we traded it in on another Sport. This one was blue, but otherwise pretty much the same as the first one.
1994 Mazda MX-3, purchased in 1994. The Rabbit gave up the ghost, so my wife needed a new car. It was exactly like this one:
About this time my wife started working with horses extensively. She managed a couple barns for people, took care of horses when people went on vacation, that sort of thing. It was her full-time job. So we traded cars -- she got the Explorer, and I got the Mazda. Which led to:
1996 Plymouth Neon, purchased in 1996. I wasn't a huge fan of the MX-3, it was a bit too small for me. So I traded it in & got the Neon instead. It was exactly like this, and was my first car with ABS:
1996 Ford Explorer V8. My wife had two horses, and wanted to get a trailer. Trailering with the short wheelbase manual transmission V6 Explorer Sport wasn't really an option, so we got the Explorer V8. It was black, but essentially like this:
1998 Volkswagen New Beetle Sport, purchased in 1998. And then it began. I bought my first NB right away after the introduction. It had the 2.0l gas engine, automatic (long commute in those days), and was black.
2000 Volkswagen New Beetle GLS, purchased in 2000. We were in a money-saving period of our lives, and the Explorer was eating gas and had high car payments. My wife's trailering needs had pretty much ended, and she had been working full time as a computer game artist for a couple years, so we decided to trade in the Explorer & get another Beetle. She inherited the 1998, and the new one was mine, a limited edition "Reflex Yellow" NB with the 1.8l turbo engine, leather, 5 speed.
2001 Volkswagen New Beetle GLS, purchased 2001. My wife deserved a new car, and the '98 had developed some issues. So we bought the 2001 with the 1.9l TDI diesel engine. Fantastic gas mileage. In 2002 we put in a chip upgrade which made it almost as fast as the Turbo bug, while still getting 40-50MPG. We'll get rid of that car when it falls apart -- hopefully after another couple hundred thousand miles (it's already got almost 75k miles on it).
2004 Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible GLS, purchased in 2004. This is my mid-life crisis car. The lease on the 2000 had expired, so I gave it back to the bank & got the 'vert. It has the 1.8t turbocharged engine, manual transmission, sport leather seats, xenon headlights, etc. etc. It's loaded and I'm loving it
And that's it! So what's your "fleet" looked like over the years?
