Dealing with crazy drug addled neighbors | A Saga

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Maybe check and see if there are any city ordinances regarding vehicle storage. (Un-registered or registered)
There are a huge number of city ordinances that they're violating. We've sent detailed documentation (including pictures) to the city with all of our many complaints the last few years. What usually happens is: a guy comes out to "inspect" the property, but doesn't even get out of his truck. He then calls us a few days later and says something like "I didn't find any violations. You can't just call me out here because you don't like your neighbors. Also, you need to check your white privilege (I'm white, dude saying this is white, everyone next door is white) and try to have some compassion for the homeless and their situation." Guy even once told my wife and I to stop taking photos and gathering evidence, because what we see and document doesn't matter, the only thing that matters is what he sees and documents.

We're like 99% sure this guy from the city is on the take or getting a cut.

His take is his salary. He gets paid either way. His boss probably told him that stuff like this is not actionable anymore. He might be as dismayed by the whole situation as you are but he also knows nobody will do anything and he might get retaliated against if files it. The city will do something if one of these junkies goes ape shit and stabs another one and they tell the news that they had no reports on the property.

I don't know how common this sort of thing is out there but you might want to send this evidence to the media at this point, if you can find one that would be sympathetic.

Here's one of the photos we took of one of the fires they set in their backyard last year

Flames there jumping up about 15-20 ft in the air. Again, they had no running water.

This is kind of terrible/awesome to the extent you should probably write a book about it.

You gave reasons for not leaving right now, but if prices have seriously tripled in four years and you wouldn’t have trouble finding a buyer, surely you could get something not too far away, maybe a little smaller, maybe a little less Mad Max.

My commute to work from an area that has reasonable housing prices is about 1.5 hours. But, that's in a town with a bunch of paper mills (we have a big lumber / paper industry here) and it smells awful there. Driving from reasonably priced, non-smelly housing is about 2-2.5 hours from where I live. Basically - if I want to move, I'm going to have to get a different job. If I'm getting a different job, I might as well move to a state where these kinds of things are handled properly by the city and law enforcement.

Get rid of them, nobody will miss them and you can probably make it look like they got stuck underneath the accumulator's trash.

Home values in my area have gone up about 3x since 2020 when I bought the place. As bad as this is, people would absolutely jump at the chance to buy my house if I put it on the market for even double what I bought it for. And whoever buys it will know they're getting a steal just because it's next to a homeless RV camp.
Seems like an easy decision to move then. I do not think things will get better next door anytime soon.

That's crazy... you have to be down pretty bad or super unlucky where I live to have to live that close to the homeless. And I'm sure the cops/city would do something rather than lecture me about being more sympathetic to the homeless if I called them about it. Do you live on the west coast? That's the vibe I'm getting.

The homeless are everywhere in Oregon, even in the smallest of towns. They are everywhere.

Or, you should put up a bunch of cameras and create a YouTube channel based off those idiots. Make some lemonade from all those lemons.

This movie about spying on your neighbours was much better than I anticipated. It got the cozy part of staking out right.

Definitely sue the city and keep a thorough record of everything. Get the media involved as soon as it hits too, because that bit about child trafficking is sure to get attention. It's your best shot at breaking even, because I don't know who the hell would buy your place

Another fun story - last winter we got a bad storm here, and one of the trees in their yard blew over and had a large branch land on one of the vans that was parked in their yard (I guess thankfully not one that was being occupied at the time). Well, it's just been sitting there with a giant tree limb going through the front dash and with the side windows busted out for about 7 or 8 months now. The inside of the van is all moldy from the rain.

But it's somehow still not the trashiest thing about their front yard.

Neighbours from Hell
I would definitely try to get the hell out of there(if you can). One thing I’ve learned with my BS is any time in the future I look for a place I’m going to talk to the neighbors on the street to not only assess who they are as people but I’m going to ask them about the other neighbors not just next door but in the neighborhood. You can have annoying neighbors who live streets away annoy the crap out of you. I have clowns who live somewhere, I have no idea where but it’s definitely close because I see them a few times a week speeding down our street in dirt bikes at top speed doing wheelies and stuff. And kids here play in the street. One of these days they’re going to hit one of those kids and it’s going to be awful. And I got a look at the clowns who do it, it’s just as you’d expect. Total trailer trash.

And my sister has neighbors who live 2 blocks behind her house who set off massive fireworks multiple nights a week during the summer and when she had her newborns it would wake them up every night making dealing with newborn babies and their sleep habits even worse. She almost moved because of it.

Definitely find out where you’re moving and who you’re moving near. It’s a bad problem to deal with and can be awful depending on the state. A place like Oregon that is basically a free for all, but even tougher on crime states, there’s so much grey area with what neighbors do on their property especially when it comes to noise and annoyances. Most of them if they even violate laws are just the lowest levels of misdemeanors and even tough states won’t punish you for it. It really swings you over to the side of vigilante justice.

Sell your place, buy their place, and kick everybody out. Repair, clean and sell it. You will even make money out of this.

New fun times! My creepy neighbor got two small dogs, a Pitbull and a Rottweiler. He doesn't have anywhere for them to be tied up properly, so he's just letting them roam the streets. Already caught them in my yard a few times. We have leash laws here, so just another thing they're straight up ignoring.

Guess I'll call animal control in the morning, see if they can do anything. I'm not holding my breath.

Fun weekend gardening project! My wife and I decided that we wanted to get some trellis to grow some black mustard. No other reason.

We got some planters set on some concrete blocks (so she doesn't have to bend over so far to water and take care of them) and then put the trellis in the pots. We covered the top of the trellis in tarp so that it can create some shade. I think that's how you're supposed to do it for mustard, or at least I think I saw that on a Youtube video somewhere. Anyway, check out the results!

I'm pretty excited with how it all turned out. What do you guys think? Will I get black mustard to grow like this?

What the hell is that update man? I scrolled and scrolled over the big pics to the end and there was no 'used by a hobo to prop up his tent' reveal.

Ahh well I guess there's always tomorrow. Enjoy the mustard or whatever while you can.

For context, this is a six-foot tall chain link fence in the backyard - it was super peaceful back there, but they've now backed that RV up so that the windows look over the fence into our backyard. You can also kinda see their busted ass van in the backyard that they're also living in. I've put privacy slats in the fence and covered most of it with a bamboo thing because they were just looking in and staring at us when we were outside.

The mustard we planted... well, it sure sucks that those covered trellis pieces are right in front of their RV windows.

I've been in that situation. I lived in a terraced row of houses and I had my neighbor who would lean on the fence and have conversations with the woman that lived 3 houses down shouting so she could be heard. I kept my back door open to keep cool as it was the summer and all I could hear was the woman's nasal voice over the sound of my TV. She could have just walked to this other woman house to talk with her, it was close enough.

So I just put up a 6ft fence to end it.

I moved in the winter and now it's summer and the alcoholic who loves next door spends all of his time on the porch (which is about 6-10 feet outside my bedroom and living room windows, blasting Can't Stop by Red Hot Chili Peppers on repeat, every night until about 3 in the morning.

You know theyll just move that RV. Build the wall!
When picking out a mustard pot, it's important to get one that can be easily moved. In the event that it's not getting enough sunlight or whatever, it can be relocated to the "proper" location. This particular RV is like a camper thing, it needs a truck to haul it around. So it'd be infinitely easier to move these planters than it will be for them to find someone with a truck that wants to move their camper.

Meth is legal in Oregon?
Unfortunately, yes it is. Every substance here has been "decriminalized", meaning they could technically get ticketed for possession, but it's not a crime. Supposedly if you get three tickets, you have to choose to either go to jail or go to rehab. In practice, these guys aren't paying any of these tickets or doing shit with it, so the cops don't even bother writing them.

Op is fucked if one of his neighbors know how to use a pc and he's a gaffer...
If any of these people had a PC (or game system, since this is GAF) they would immediately sell it for drug money. I'm not too worried lol

Creepy dude got arrested on Saturday afternoon. There were three different local law enforcement agencies involved - the sheriff's office and two local city agencies.

He showed back up last night. Guess they just don't want to keep people in jail these days.

Many moons ago, my wife was an accountant at Kindercare. They relocated their HQ from Montgomery, Alabama to some place in Oregon. They offered to relocate us, but we turned them down.

Needless to say, this thread this thread makes me thankful we made that decision. Sucks you have to do with that crap jshackles jshackles .

Has there been any talk about reversing what is proving to be a really shitty idea?

In April the governor signed a bill that passed the legislature that will re-criminalize most drugs / personal possession. Unfortunately, this doesn't go into effect until September - and it still gives people the option to either be a) charged with a crime or b) get checked into a rehab clinic.

The real problem is that "rehab clinic" is a loose term, and they're not regulated in any way. So a lot of enterprising people have already set up a bunch of online "rehab clinics", where you pay them $50 and they give you all the legal paperwork you need to avoid fines and jail time.

So creepy dude and his ugly woman apparently broke up yesterday. So, today the cops and CPS (finally) show up and escort this rotund lady and her small child away in their squad car. Hearing them fight, it sounds like creepy dude beat her up, and she's being taken away to a halfway house or something. She and the kid (not even sure if it's HIS kid) were all living in the RV that's presently parked a few inches from our fence line (see above mustard plant photos, which the plants are coming along nicely!).

So those two leave, and creepy dude just goes back into the RV and turns on the AC. I think he either hit them on purpose to get them to leave, or it all just turned out in his favor, but either way two of the three people living in that RV are now out of the picture (at least for the moment).

Hey bro, I lived in Seattle area for quite some time and dealt with all this same dumb shit, psycho neighbors, drugs, cops not doing shit, whole nine.

Brother....friend....comrade....fucking move. I left WA after living there for twelve years after I had it with the cops not doing shit about the drug deals in front of my duplex, and bro lemme tell ya, life goes on after leaving the west coast man. I can't tell ya how much better it is here in Maine, I mean it is night and day dude. Cops here actually do their job, none of that shit would be tolerated at all.

I know the Pacific Northwest is beautiful dude, and sometimes I kinda miss it, and then I see this shit and I'm reminded of just how much better my quality of life is here compared to what it was in WA. Also, the house I got here in Maine would have cost me well over a mil in WA and I got it for around 300k. Cost of living is still high here though, and taxes are brutal, but it absolutely kicks the shit out of WA and Oregon's absolute lawless bullshit.

As funny as all that sounds - and I honestly couldn't care less about these lowlives - can someone please take care of that child?

God I swear, If I called the shots I would have people make a licence in order to have children.

I would love to move, but I just don't think it's going to happen. The biggest issue is that my kids have now grown up here, and this is "home" to them. My wife and I have very seriously looked at moving back to the Midwest a few times. Every time we try to make a plan, both of the kids let us know that if we're moving away from Oregon that they aren't coming with us (they're adults). For my wife, that's a dealbreaker.

The other issue I've had trying to get away is that wages in my profession seem to have taken a nosedive in the last few years. I'm pulling in around $150k a year here, but looking at jobs elsewhere they're offering as little as $15/hr. Even if I move somewhere with an extremely low cost of living, I can't support my family on $15/hr. Hell, I made more than that in Alabama in 2001. I have over 30 years experience in a highly specialized field, and I've worked at my current job for 15 of those years. My job has an honest to god pension program that is absolutely unheard of anywhere else.

And yeah, I'd miss it. The other day I ran (from my front door) out to the ocean, ran down the beach a few miles until I hit one of the other trails, and ran back from there. It was only a total of 8 miles. I might be able to do that in Maine, but the nature here is unreal, and I'm right in the thick of it.

As funny as all that sounds - and I honestly couldn't care less about these lowlives - can someone please take care of that child?

God I swear, If I called the shots I would have people make a licence in order to have children.

It's sadly so much worse than I've described. Like they'll leave this kid unsupervised for hours and hours (she's about 9 or 10 years old, tops). They have the two aggressive dogs that usually "look after" her. She rides her bike in the road unsupervised. Her hair and clothes are dirty and torn. Mom and (maybe) Dad are both on drugs all the time. This kid has 0% chance for a normal life.

My neighbor's house is 100 yards from mine by that's not far enough to not be inundated by them burning trash and shooting guns until The wee hours of the morning. The lady on the other side of them called the police and got the guy arrested for violating a no burn order. He'll probably burn her house down when he gets out.

Went last week and spoke with the City Manager. Let them know that I had concerns about how these ordinances aren't being actioned in a timely manner. Let them know that my lawyers advised me to go have a face-to-face conversation before bringing legal action against the city.

So they've promised to inspect the property again this week, and to provide me with written details and photos of their findings.

Should be interesting, at the very least.
