How do I get my cat to stop drinking from the tap??

Its been a terrible curse!

First it drinks from its bowl but it decides thats not good enough! It wants its water straight from the tap into its mouth so we have to put him out new bowl of water from the tap every time he wants to drink. You can't leave the bowl out cause its no good! Now hes sick of the bowl and will only drink from tap!

We've tried everything! We've bought him one of those water dispensing cat bowls, restricting him from tap water but the only thing he'll do is starve himself of water and meow for ages...

HALP?

As you can see he's quite big for a cat so it becomes even more of a trouble as his meowing is extra loud!

What a demanding animal. There are strays out there that make do with drinking out of a ditch and this snooty bastard demands constant replenishment?

My cat likes staring at the strays in the neighbours backyard feed on what leftovers are thrown by the neighbours :| Hes a bit of a prick.

His size also means that he hogs the bed.

Is that a Sacred Birman? If so: You're fucked... you can't change their weird habits and odd characters.

That is why they are so awesome.

Holy shit I did not know this. I thought he was just an overly large tabby :S

Reading a few sites and looking at a few pics..Definitely a Birman..

It sure as hell looks like one. Does it have blue eyes? It has to has those. If not I think it still has some Birman blood in him.

I have two of those magnificent bastards. Azumi and Loki

Yeah has blue eyes, they're absolutely magnificent in the morning. Haha how did you ever deal with two? I can't deal with one sharing the same bed as me!

I deal with it by chasing them around the house 4 o'clock in the morning after they have bitten me in the toes.

They have pretty odd 'features'. They are both extremely sweet as well as rather annoying (especially during night). One moment he is sleeping next to me all sweet and cuddly, the next he is running around the room with my goddamn phone in his mouth.

I wouldn't trade them for any other cat in the world though :D

Try getting one of these, my cat loves to drink for the tap, but also enjoys drinking from this. Just change the filters every month and do a thorough cleaning at the same time, and just add more water every few days.

I wouldn't recommend the dome fountains from them though, they are impossible to clean after a few months of usage, and the water won't flow correctly anymore.

When I'm not at home I don't want him to starve himself of water.

He'll drink from the bowl when he gets really thirsty. But he knows you'll open the tap for him if he whines for a bit, so he doesn't have to.

My cat does the same thing pretty much but I still see him drink from his water dish too. I replaced the regular dish with a dish that has a water tank on top and that seemed to encourage more drinking. He still likes tap water, though.

Do they eat dry food? Since I switched to wet/canned food, my cats have stopped drinking water altogether (though I still always provide it). They don't seem to need the extra moisture. You could try this.

I'd suggest a filtered "fountain" water bowl, for starters - I have one for my Norwegian Forest cats and they use it... My other suggestion is to leave a tap on "drip" most of the time and let him drink out of it... what's the harm? a couple litres of water a day?

Wet food is also a very good idea. Cats are obligate predators, and naturally derive most of the moisture their bodies need from their prey, so they aren' t naturally accustomed to drinking as much as they should.

I got 2 bengal cats a few months ago, and have been wanting to start a thread like this. My big issue is litter. I've got one box for 2 cats, and have used several different kinds of litter, and am currently using those crystals.

I guess my main issue is that the current placement of the box is in a spare bathroom right off of the main room where I sit and watch tv every night. I'll be remodeling this summer, which should hopefully fix this, but in the meantime I have to deal with poop-stink every time they take a dump.

Also, it seems like I have to change the litter pretty much every week. I'm not opposed at all to one of those fancy automatic boxes, I haven't really heard anything good about most of them. I've heard reasonable things about the 'Cat Genie', but nothing anecdotal that would make me spend the $400+ that I would ultimately fork up for one.

Anyways, what do you guys use?

I've never seen my cat drink the water for him inside the house.

We've had him for 11 years and the first time I saw him drink was last year and that was from a rain filled plant pot outside.

I had a cat that used to drink from the water inside a vase (with plant) instead of her bowl...

My last cat would only drink from a cup. Do you know how hard it is to find a cup that isn't too tall, but that a cat can fit their head in?

I have a similar issue with my two cats. I set up two litter boxes but we keep them in the smaller bathroom that we don't really use but it it next to our bedroom. I'm open to getting the Genie thing if it actually works.

At least your cat is only drinking from the tap. When I got these bengals, I thought, "Oh, cool, these cats love water. This is so funny!". Now it's like the most annoying thing ever. The minute a faucet is turned on, the cats are all up in the sink. Just getting as soaked as they possibly can. Same goes with the shower. I've got to make sure they are locked out of the bathroom when I go to take a shower, otherwise they just jump right in with me. Then they are sopping wet and drag water all over the house.

No joke, put the water out in a bowl and leave it there. Stop pandering to your cat and it will drink water to survive before dying. Despite what you might think, your cat... anyones cat will drink available water if the other option is death by dehydration.

Stop pandering to your pet animal and take control.

I just use normal, 'ol Tidycat Power Blend and a Rollaway litterbox. It is definitely a lot cheaper than the fully automated ones.

My set of munchkins (6lbs and 9lbs) are on a Blue Buffalo food diet. Their poo doesn't really sink all that much. You might look into changing their food.

My vet recommended to us to get the smaller boy to drink more water, and suggested one of those cat fountains. Right now he likes to drink out of cups (we have a rocker glass on the ground for them to use) but I bet he'd like one of those fountains. That Fresh & Clear fountain looks like it might be too tall for my short-legged cats, so if anyone else has fountain suggestions I'd appreciate it :)

Huh, never seen that Rollaway box. The whole thing doesn't get all gross with all the rolling around? And how often do you have to do a total litter change?

I do a total litter change once a month, just for sanitary purposes. Cats tend to cover their crap with litter so it doesn't smear all over the lid of the box when I roll it on its side to filter out the waste. Then I just pull out the little tray and *ta daa* the box is all clean for the day. Takes all of 15 seconds and no plastic littler scoop to deal with.

Is there any way to have a cat without having cat hair everywhere?

You could buy a sphinx (hairless cat) breed or pretty much just get use to vacuuming every other day.

Oh my god. I need one of these cats.

We have two cats and one does the same thing as yours. They even look alike.

So I got one of these:

It keeps water flowing all the time so its more oxigenated and does not stale out. We also give her water from the sink. Its a nightly ritual, as I take out my contacts she drinks for a minute or two then hops on the bed.

My cat only drinks water out of this metal water jug I have lol.

Used to drink all the water from my planet vases too.

Lol, my grey cat wont even go near water. He runs when the tap is turned on, when the hose is turned on, and even leaves the room when we re-fill his dish because hes afraid of being splashed. He got wet once as a kitten and has hated it ever since.

His sister (a calico) just stares and looks around like "what the hell was that" when she gets hit with water.

My cats drink from the tap, but I still have a bowl out that they drink from. If they're really thirsty, they'll drink from the bowl. They may be spoiled little bastards, but they're not so dim as to dye of thirst if they can't get to running water for a few days.

Could always have the groomer shave them. Have to do it with one of our cats.

How much something like this cost? ( Canada/ N.A. pricing)

My cat is the worst with hair, my sister and my nieces wont even visit me anymore because

1) She hates cats (My nieces love my cat though) and...

2) She hates cat hair even more!!

My bathtub faucet drips water all the time so my big Siberian jumps in and slurps all the water she wants. She also drinks out of her bowl. At my old apartment she'd drink out of my bathroom sink. Cats be crazy.

Hit it on the nose when it goes for the tap. Look at how cats tell each other they don't want something to happen, replicate that so they respect you. Gotta learn to speak their language.

We paid about $40 US. We had gray hair all over our house. I felt like I was picking it up all day. The groomer clipped his nails, cut his hair, and gave him a bath. Problem solved. Probably only have to do it 3 times a year. He is very furry, though!
