Will need to have better library and UI than Rdio for me to consider switching. Seriously, Rdio's web version is the bomb. Free access to everything and you don't need to pay. The mobile version was neat but I didn't like it enough to subscribe.
I just checked their website. Looks like it's only free for 6 months?

Its a difference in function, but you are vastly overstating the gulf in 'difficulty' (if you can even call it that). In both cases you just type your song into the already displayed bar, your song shows up. In GP you don't have to click the 3 dots, just right click the song or album and you can add it to any playlist. You only have to use the 3 dots on the mobile app.

I would hardly call that a huge difference at all. And Google Now and GSearch have song finding abilities through the phone linked with Play Music as well. Tap the microphone and it will ID the song playing with a link to Play Music.

I really don't see a gulf in performance or features at all really. Just an ever shrinking difference in library.

Does Google Now have song searching functions in Canada now? Was under the impression that it wasn't enabled yet.

Insofar as mouse-clicks go, it really is that inconvenient especially when you're manually typing in your songs from Shazam or Soundhound. Actually, I think typing the song and pressing enter auto-adds to the playlist too, which makes it even faster.

It costs less than Netflix per month, IIRC.

Sorry we have to agree to disagree then. Hell you don't even have to right click at all in GPM if you don't want to. You can just drag the song from the search results over to the playlist of your choice on the left side of the screen and it will add it. This such a hilariously minor UI difference that I cannot fathom calling it anywhere near inconvenient.

GPM is split into two sort of services. Uploading 20k songs, song matching, access to your uploaded library via phone/web browser is all free period. The 'All Access' portion is what you pay for. It gives you access to music you don't already own. Basically all the music on Googles service, so when an Album comes out you can just listen to it all you want instead of having to buy it, so long as you pay a subscription fee. But even if you cancel all access, you still can have up to 20k songs uploaded from your personal music collection accessible.

Not really since you need the $10 sub to use the mobile app.

I was talking about Rdio, not Google Play Music.

It takes two clicks. Right click then left click. I'm not sure where the inconvenience is.

Edit: Or like Cipherr said, just drag and drop. Making it one click process.

After spending some time with the free trial of All Access I think it's going to be well worth the sub.

So I'm still confused as to how this works. It's basically Netflix for music right?

So why do a lot of online reviews talk about "buying" music? Why would you buy a single or an album if you can just stream it and pin it? Or is there a limit to how many times you can play a song? <_>

Buying a monthly subscription lets you stream everything. But if your sub expires or you decide to not pay it for whatever reason, the only thing you continue to have access to is the music you uploaded from your computer, or the music you bought.

Buying albums while you are subscribed is a waste. Just stream them all you want, no limits.

No limit to hearing songs. Artists make songs for every listen. Just make sure to listen a lot to your favorite artists :)

Thanks! I was a bit worried there. Signing up now :D

Wow, you guys are just getting this?

Did you all hear that the iraq was is over, eh?

What Iraq war? ;)

After using this for the entire day I'm completely satisfied. I'm okay paying $7.99/month for this, totally worth it.

Not a fan of the UI/UX at all. I'm going to try it a bit more but I feel like I'm going to stick with Rdio.

They should at least discount albums and songs if you get a subscription so you get to keep it when your sub runs out.

Thats.... a really good idea. Would encourage buying which I have to assume would be good for both them and the music buyer.

Definitely a similar feeling. I'm glad to be trying it out, and maybe I will stick with it, but it's definitely a fair bit more cluttered than Rdio is.

Is there a social sharing of playlists for all access? That's the one thing I really liked about Rdio, being able to search other people's shared playlists and listen to them.

You can, I've seen it on g+ and apparently it's available the app itself. I've never really dug in though

Huh, so you can upload ANY music to the service?

Is the space used by the 20k songs separate from your Google Drive space?

Hmmmm it's confusing to find. I can see featured playlists by people, but haven't found any way to search in the app itself.

So I was actually going to compare Rdio to Google Play Music at work, because I listen to music when I'm at my desk.

Rdio is blocked by company wifi. Guess I'll stick to Google Play Music then lol.

That's not what I mean. In Rdio if you do a search for say "movie OST" it will not only give you songs, artist, albums related to that, but playlists other people have made with that keyword. I'm just wondering if you can do that too within the app.

No, you can't search playlists.

I bought an album last night thinking it would just download to my music folder. Turns out it doesn't, and I had to go on the website and download it from there, then transfer it to my music player to get it to show up in Poweramp.

I also went on iTunes to see what the price was there, and it was actually cheaper and had one more track than Google Play version did. Are albums usually more expensive on Play?

Can't really use 3rd party players with Google Music, you need to use the official app. There you will see all your music and be able to stream and pin it to your device. Doing the latter still won't let you play the music in other apps though, because Google Music doesn't save downloaded songs to your regular music folder, but instead to its own app data folder (which you can't normally access). So, yeah, use the official app if you want the full functionality and convenience of the service.

Have any Canucks here cancelled your US All Access subscription and signed up for a Canadian subscription?

How was your experience? I've been hearing some messy things and am wondering if I should bother.

Loving this <3 Will definitely keep paying for it. I finally have something to at the bus stop (looking up new artists) other than reading a book, which is too cold to do for 75% of the year.

Really liking it so far, but still a few issues, and not sure I like it more than Rdio as there as things I like and dislike in both, but I think I'll make the switch when I keep using it throughout the month trial.

One audio issue really bugs me, when listening, and browsing the site, at times my music will hang and give a short little stutter, and it drives me crazy that it even happens. Is this a known issue?

Also, can I change the artist art in my library? Hate what some have defaulted to.

I like that you can get the mini player and launch it from your Windows Taskbar. Rdio needs to do something similar.

If Play Music had the UI/UX of Rdio, I'd be all over it. I get how this fits in with Google's overall UI design, but I don't like their overall UI design philosophy in the first place. I also think it's going to be hard to convert some of my iOS friends over to this since they've all become embedded into the Rdio and Spotify ecosystems for a while now. It's another reason I feel I'm going to stay with Rdio.

Cross posting from the GPAA thread since this is a recent-er thread.

Hi guys.

Spent the last few days doing a little chrome extension which works as a remote for Google Music.

It's not yet published since I've been trying to fix all bugs and weirdness here and there. I would very much appreciate if anyone installed it and gave me feedback since this is the final RC before I fully publish it.

Chrome Web Store link

Thanks

Hmmm.. I want to be able to share this across devices.
Though I only want 1 device to have access to my personal google stuff, like email, hangouts, etc...

Is that possible without too much trouble?
Also want it to be secure, not something that can easily be changed via a setting.

Was thinking of creating a separate account just for music...

man, why is uploading so borked for me? for me to add a new album, I have to go into the Music Manager, remove the folder, and have it scan all 10 000+ songs all over again. and when I try to add music via the button on the Google Play Music website itself, I just get an error message. what gives...

yes I do have the popout player installed and I am using Google Chrome. I love the service but uploading new music is a damn chore most of the time.

Did you try dragging and dropping your music onto the site?

yeah, it just shows that record spinning animation for 2 minutes then I get an error message and my only options are "try again" (which does nothing) and "go back". the only way for me to upload music at the moment is to go to the Music Manager program, remove my folders and have the program rescan my folders. unfortunately this takes forever because I have more than 10,000 tracks. meh
