CBS signs three actors to main 'Hawaii Five-O' cast replacing Daniel Kim, Grace Park

600x338

CBS, which came under fire for the controversial departure of two key Asian cast members from “Hawaii-Five-O,” announced it is promoting a recurring cast member and adding two new performers to the cast. Ian Anthony Dale, Meaghan Rath and Beulah Koale have been signed to join leads Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan when the series returns for its eighth season Sept. 9. Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park, who had been with the series since its debut, said they were leaving the show amid claims they were paid less than their white counterparts, O’Loughlin and Caan. Executives for the network and the series said Kim and Park, who they considered to be supporting characters, had turned down substantial raises to remain with the show. Dale, who has played a recurring role on “Hawaii” as Adam Noshimuri, a trusted confidant and resource for the show since Season 2. He is being promoted to a series regular in the new season, as his character is recruited by Det. Steve McGarrett (O’Loughlin) to work for the “Five-O” police unit.

Rath will play Tani Rey, who McGarrett recruits after he finds her working as a lifeguard at a hotel pool after she was kicked out of the Police Academy, despite being a first-rate candidate.

Koale will play Junior Reigns, a former Navy SEAL who asks McGarrett, a fellow SEAL, for a job, hoping to repurpose his skills as a member of Five-0.

The announcement of the new cast comes a few weeks after CBS was blasted for not re-signing Kim and Park in the reboot of the popular 1960s detective show. The network has long been criticized for casting white men in lead roles in their comedies and dramas.

Daniel Kim is a great actor. Five-O is crazy to lose him. And Grace was actually fun on the show.

Sad to see them go. Daniel oughta try to hit movies though. Go big time!

H50 has always been bad about product placement. Chevrolet, Microsoft, Subway...

Filming in Hawaii is expensive, and CBS is cheap.

I never understood why people can't just use actual Japanese last names.

Noshimuri is random as fuck lol

Well hey, a Pacific Islander. Samoan, not Hawaiian, but's cool to see some Polynesian representation for once.

lol it's so close to something like Nishimura, too. Could've just swapped some vowels around.

I really wish Ian Anthony Dale could get better work, I suppose a "promotion" here to a lead character is better than nothing :/

Product placement that is self aware can be really funny to me. Like 30 Rock and Community have done with products. At least if you are not going the comedy route, it should be done in a more subtle way.

Danield Dae Kim was a supporting character? the is the only thing i know about this show.

That's the narrative that CBS is pushing to explain why they couldn't pay the two as much as the white men - one of which only works half a season. However, they forgot that this is how they sold the show:

Yeah, you don't put your supporting characters front and center ...

It's like NCIS LA for example. They are a team, all have storylines and all.
You think the others earn as much as LL Cool J and O'Donnel? They are the main characters.

I watch Hawaii Five-0, and I know there's no way anyone is more important there than Alex O'Loughlin. He's the face of the show. Caan's presence in the show reduced in the past recent seasons, but he already had his deal, plus his character is very attached to O'Loughlin's.
Even if they were both white, they'd be behind those 2.

Here's the lesson: Taking a stand can just get you replaced. There's always somebody willing to eat the shit you won't take.
