CDC now says coronavirus 'does not spread easily' via contaminated surfaces

For those of you still wiping down groceries and other packages amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, breathe a sigh of relief: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now says the novel virus “does not spread easily” from "touching surfaces or objects" — but experts warn that doesn’t mean it’s no longer necessary to take "practical and realistic" precautions in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

Though it’s not exactly clear when, the federal health agency appears to have recently changed its guidelines from early March that simply said it “may be possible” to spread the virus from contaminated surfaces. The CDC now includes "surfaces or objects" under a section that details ways in which the coronavirus does not readily transmit.

Other ways in which the virus does not easily spread is from animals to people, or from people to animals, the federal agency said on its updated page.

“COVID-19 is a new disease and we are still learning about how it spreads. It may be possible for COVID-19 to spread in other ways, but these are not thought to be the main ways the virus spreads,” according to the CDC.

The CDC did, however, remind citizens that the virus does mainly spread person-to-person, noting the virus that causes a COVID-19 infection, SARS-CoV-2, "is spreading very easily and sustainably between people.”

Gee, I sure have no reason to doubt any agency of the federal government having maximum pressure applied to downplay the seriousness of our situation due to political reasons. There’s surely no reason to think the retards shouting that things are all good have any sort of political alignment at all. No siree. Drink bleach if you got it!

No virus's primary transmission method is through surfaces. Take anything that isn't normal behavior for a virus with a grain of salt, because all of it is turning out to not be true.

China did a limited study where they traced down the infection source for a sample of people. If my memory is correct, they found one case of surface transmission and around 100 cases of indoor airborne transmission and a few cases of outdoor airborne transmission. Sorry, search terms are too broad for me to locate the news article on the study.

We have seen tons of coronoviruses. We typically call it the common cold. They may have different lethalities and R0s, but they spread the same way.

This is true but there is a bunch of aspects of COVID 19 that do not jive with coronaviruses that we've seen in the past.

And how many anomalous behaviors are proving to be misinformation? It is looking like reinfection rates are the same as other viruses, i.e. it can happen in rare circumstances but thats it. The viability on surfaces for hours and days is also looking less and less likely.

I hope the CDC uses this latest data to update their school reopening guidance.

What happened to the article? Do you have another link since it doesn't seem to be there anymore.

Probably my fuckup posting on mobile:

I agree that the CDC should be looking at all the recent info and updating all of the lockdown measures. My point was that we are learning about this everyday and early/incomplete data is not necessarily misinformation. Early indications that the virus can remain viable on a metal surface for 3 days in a lab is not incompatible information with it not being very likely to be spread this way in the real world. You go with the best info you have available until more test/studies/research shows that previous information was untrue or doesnt paint the complete picture of the situation.
