While I find all this speculation interesting, it seems kind of pointless to make guesses based on a several year old patent filing now when all questions should be answered at ISSCC in a couple days.

How big of an impact does the Cell have though on the system's performance overall, graphically or otherwise. Being the idiot I am when stuff gets technical, I thought the biggest deal was Microsoft grabbing ATI, the leader in graphics chips. Somehow I just have more faith in them to put out a better chip. Or is the Cell going to put Sony ahead somehow? Because they've been throwing every dollar they have at this thing for years. You gotta think the ATI/Nvidia debate had to be on their minds during all this, right?

If Cell really delievers what the STI group(Sony,Toshiba,IBM) promises,then we might just be close to having the computing power needed for real-time Global Illumination e.g. ray tracing and photon mapping. One thing I do say though,is that I live to see the day Final Fantasy:TSW is ray traced in real-time.
