A friend of mine at work wanted to see the christo gates, so we went and took pics today after work. I posted some of the pics here for my GAF friends outside of New York. The Gates will be there I think until sunday, worth checking out NY GAF'ers. I want to go back and explore the upper regions of CP, if so I'll post more pics. Feel free to save the pics for your collection. Enjoy.

First time I saw those things it was some news broadcast and I just assumed it was one of those damned truth commercials.

They've monopolized that orange.

Nice photos, but you really need to turn off the date/time stamp. Ruins the pictures!

My dad is in NY for business this week so my mom flew up to meet him so they could see The Gates today. My brother also flew there from Chicago to check them out with his boyfriend this weekend. I think it's a pretty damn cool project personally.

Great photos by the way, although as mentioned the time stamp is a real shame!

Gah I know, I'm so pissed I just got a new digicam and forgot about the whole date/time crap. I also took alot of 5 megapixel shots and I sure the time/date is on them to. I'll have to head back tommorow, or sunday.

Human logic in full-flight is truly a wonderous thing...

Says the guy that hasn't given a reason about what is good about throwing a bunch of orange ugly gates in a park that looks much better without them.

I'm from Europe and I don't get it. What's so special about this? Some kind of exhibition or memorial?

Why are their works so big. What's the point?

Christo & Jeanne-Claude's works are entire environments, whether they are urban or rural. The artists temporarily use one part of the environment. In doing so, we see and perceive the whole environment with new eyes and a new consciousness.

The effect is astounding. To be in the presence of one of these artworks is to have your reality rocked. You see things you have never seen before. You also get to see the fabric manifest things that cannot usually be seen, like the wind blowing, or the sun reflecting in ways it had not before.

The effect lasts longer than the actual work of art. Years after every physical trace has been removed and the materials recycled, original visitors can still see and feel them in their minds when they return to the sites of the artworks.

There is no other way to describe that the feeling of that effect other than to say it is magical.

It's a 16 day exhibit which runs untill this Sunday.

I find it attractive. I like the contrast with the snow... I think it's soothing.

Your turn. And try for something a bit more intelligent than "it's retarded". Generally criticism is substantiated by some thought out reasoning, unless you're ok with having your "criticism" dismissed.

I find it ugly. I hate the way the orange looks....I think it's irritating and not needed.

There's nothing soothing or magical about orange drapes.

Not just orange drapes. Multi-million dollar orange drapes.

Okay, okay, dude, we realize you only go to Central Park to pick up/stalk hookers, and the drapes interfere with that already. You don't have to keep reminding us

Yeah really. I'm glad this guy spent millions on ugly gates instead of cause that might actually be important.
Don't be silly. Artists spend money on their art. They funded the project entirely.
Dude, if it bothers you so much go to Central Park and rage against the machine, or fight the power etc. you know, maybe kick one of the gates or somethin'. You seem unnecessarily bitter and angry about the whole thing.

Central Park had been cleaned up until this guy with a weird wife showed up.

I never said they didn't.

I think I'll just vent about it here. BTW, I don't see how expressing my opinion about how ugly and dumb the gates are can be viewed as "raging against the machine" or any other hyperbole you come up with.

Isn't central park supposed to be a refuge from New Yorkers from the city? To remind New Yorkers of what trees and shit look like?

If I were a New Yorker I'd fuck those gates up.

hmm, if id had known about it yesterday id have stopped by central park since i went to my bank in the city yesterday which is just a few blocks away from central park...but il be damned if im gonna take the sub back to the manhatten on my days off just to see some cloth...thanks for the pics tho, i can imagine i experienced it. :lol

Sucks that I'll be missing them by less than a week. The gates look great. Awesome contrast against the dull background. Good day to take those pics.

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
Dumbest shit to hit NYC since...oh God, ever. Get rid of them! There is absolutely nothing special about this.

pfft, asif this doesn't look wicked -

But seriously, even if you guys don't think it does, I think you're overreacting. Like one of you said, they're just "some cloth"? "Dumbest shit to hit NYC...ever"? Jesus Alpha, get a grip. :lol

When I went up to see it I wasn't that impressed, but as I walked around just the sheer amount of them overwhelmed me. The way the sun changed the color, and during sunset it was beautiful. Just seeing how many people were walking through it has to be impressive. On such a cold day in February, there were a lot of people walking in a park.

I really dont understand criticism. It's brought attention to the city, and to the park, and his vision was kind of intriguing.

What I wanna know is what they are doing with them afterwards? Are they going to sell them?

BTW - did anything come into this thread thinking it had something to do with Jean Claude Van Damme? :lol

heard an interview with him on BBC and he said the point of art was to cause discussion and whether you like it or not you are contributing to his art by commenting.

He doesn't expect everybody or even a majority to like it but they will discuss it.
