Cerebrawl: sick new 2D fighter in development is looking good

Aaaall night. :D
More coming soon. I was only required to make two or three songs, but composing in this style is too damn fun. Great stress relief.

Hope you guys consider offering the game to people who donate an amount similar to what you intend to price the game, it would really drum up interest IMO.

Thanks for the input, I'm personally leaning that way but we aren't in definite agreement just yet because we don't know what form the release will take, and when.

You're absolutely right though! If/when we do that, it'd be a good relieving step for us and the community. "Okay, we think we're ready to tell you that you can buy this thing."

Totally love how much effort is being put into this game. Not enough high quality art 2D games out there and this one looks and sounds great.

Was in until I saw the "love letter to Marvel 2" quote... pretty much what kept me from ever really getting invested in Skullgirls.

Good luck to the team though, I'm always bummed with indie fighters like The Chainsaw Incident can't make it.

Chainsaw incident didnt make it? It looked so polished and actually a fair way complete. Surprised they didn't get the funding.

That's great to hear. I'm there as soon as that's an option.

They had one of the worst Campaigns I ever saw. Just slew of bad decisions after bad decisions, worst offender in my opinion was only offering the game to those who contributed $75 or more. If you pay less you only get beta access.

Yooo! 2 Mello here, composer of the Cerebrawl soundtrack and the sound designer. Just wanted to pop in and say I read this damn thread every time I'm feeling down on myself. So glad everyone's loving the soundtrack!

My main influences are the music of the Jet Set Radio series, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike's more chilled-out bits, and the beautifully quirky classic Katamari Damacy. Man, I'd love to get hired for a game like Katamari. But how many of those are there? Other favorite soundtracks include Silent Hill 2 and Chrono Trigger.

Mainly just want to thank everyone and not plug too much, but if you're interested in getting a new prototype of the game every two weeks, trying to break it for us and have a little fun with it, we're taking donations over at the site to help get us along as we prepare to pursue funding (no crowdfunding). We are all dedicated enough at this moment in time that we are willing to make the game as slowly as we need to, in whatever time we have outside other work, even if funding doesn't come at all.

The support now may not necessarily guarantee you get a copy at release, it's more for people who wanna be part of this process and help us rip up the game and learn our flaws. We do a weekly podcast for donors, and two good Twitch streams a week for everyone, usually art-related. It's starting to feel like a real video game.

Thanks again for all the words! Eliot, our artist, also really loves it when people critique his designs! He's enjoying how divisive our character Helen has been, here and everywhere. :)
!

I've been following your work and your projects since your fantastic Read Only Memories OST (Love Me Better was THE BEST pick-me-up song when I was feeling down for a while) Sick work on this soundtrack as well.

Huge fan, keep up being awesome and best of luck with Cerebrawl! :)

Holy Shit. I've been following NIW on pixiv for a while now, he's definitely a competent character designer, and I hadn't heard of 2 Mello, but these tracks are dope.

Definitely going to keep tabs on this project, it looks very promising.

Edit: Oh hello there, didn't notice you right above me...great work, I'm really excited.

Even without comeback mechanics, the characters were deep enough to always let you feel as though you had a chance even in a losing situation. MvC2 rewarded you for character knowledge and taking advantage of the systems the game had to offer. Almost any single character had the depth worthy of a lifetime of study, multiply that by three, and you had a depth that was limited only by your imagination.

He's talking about MvC2, right? huh?

soundtrack on point though.

Man, that combo looks devastating. I'm sure it won't do that much damage in the game proper, but that's over 4/5 of a life bar in one go, right? Looks like it'd be hype to pull off, though!

Also they really need a straight man or woman to be the face. Showing 3 ugly characters as peoples introduction to the game probably isn't the best idea. They need a Donovan or Felicia in the mix.

I dunno, I like the "ugly" characters. And even then, only Helen really seems that "ugly." Susan just seems punk, and Operator 28's a stylized knight. Besides, it's too early to tell if there'll be more "standard" characters down the road or if we're getting an entire cast of peculiar characters. I know it's a bit less marketable, but I'd love it if everyone on the roster was a weirdo.

Even with only 5 or so songs, this OST's already shaping up to be legendary. Fantastic work, 2Mello! "Use Your Mind" is one of those songs that would fit in perfectly among its inspirations (I'm assuming the biggest one is "Moving On" from Third Strike?), yet has a unique flavor of its own. I can't wait to hear more like it! Best of luck to you and the rest of the Cerebrawl team!

$10 and $15 donations now get a copy of the final game

News time!

The question we get asked the most through our contact form is whether or not donations come with access to the final game. The team got together and decided that going forward, if you donated on the $10+ or $15+ levels you will be receiving a final copy of the game. The donations are no longer restricted to prototype/alpha/beta access.

Anyone who bought in at those levels is considered a super early bird. When the prototype releases in a couple of weeks, the price of access for new early birds will increase to $12 and $17 respectively. The price will raise at each major milestone (alpha and beta) until we hit our final MSRP at release (so tell your friends to get in early!).

While I'm not really a fan of the way the game looks, I'll hold my final judgment until the game is actually out. Looking back at the reveal thread for Skullgirls, it's crazy how much shit the game received.

The characters designs are definitely out there, but it looks pretty interesting. The blue hair wrestling little girl seems like she could be cool.

It looks like any of these fighting games that touches kickstarter/indiegogo either doesn't get funded or gets canceled/stuck in development though. That MLP game? turned into a new game and is still in development. The Chainsaw Incident? Disappeared. Beast's Fury? Went silent and surprise, development stopped. BTW, this game had 2 (or 3?) funding campaigns.

Skullgirls and Yatagarasu are the only games that are up and running and they just asked to fund for more content. Oh, and RIP Yatagaraus.
Wanted to give the game a try and found out it was completely dead.

Thats because fighting games are easily one of the most difficult games to make. Its a ridiculous amount of content.

Might as well make the players 1 hit if that's the case.
Just don't get hit.

Pretty sure that's what killed Marvel vs Capcom and Xmen vs Street fighter community almost immediately.

Just noticed that infinite are a part of this game's features.

NOPE.
I'm out.
That's literally showing an infinite-prevention mechanism though: gravity scaling. Unless you think infinite means combos with more than 10 hits.

As for the game, I'm kind of impressed the devs have kept on truckin'. At the outset it seemed like they were in the wave of indie fighters that tried following skullgirls, but most of those were coming from people who didn't seem to have a clue about making fighting games. I hope this thing makes it to release.

There's always something for someone and I hope people enjoy this.
Was excited until I noticed that combo.

I hope people enjoy this and good luck on a long lasting community.

Just by going off the potential combo system it seems to be apply gravity scaling as said above, probably not heavy enough one considering the damage so far.

Hopefully the damage could be lowered (a lot lower) and increase the gravity scaling if they want to go that route. Personally, the game seems fine consider how early it is.

If I could suggest anything is to lower the damage a great deal and hope the developers put a focus on neutral/spacing game. Other indie games I've played always tended to focus on combos and resets for some reason, especially when inspired by assist systems. :/
