CES Cheif defends Ivanka Trump invite after #BoycottCES had been trending.

The man in charge of next week's giant CES tech expo has said that Ivanka Trump has done "great work" and will help it focus attendees' minds on job-related issues for the future.

A decision to offer the US president's daughter one of the show's "keynote" sessions has caused controversy.

Critics have said other women with more expertise have failed to be granted lower-profile slots at the trade show.

But Gary Shapiro told the BBC that he did not regret the decision.

"There's a lot of focus on jobs of the future, and certainly the keynote that I'll be doing with Ivanka Trump will be focusing on... how industry is working with government on this very important issue," he said.

He will interview Ms Trump - who serves as a jobs creation adviser to the president - when she appears on stage on Tuesday 7 January.

He declined, however, to say if her appearance had been his organisation's idea or if the White House had requested the address.

Over the following days hundreds of people tweeted objections to the announcement, often using the hashtag #BoycottCES.

"I was far from pleased at the news and the reason is certainly not found in my political beliefs," blogged CES regular Carolina Milanesi from the tech consultancy Creative Strategies.

"The reason for my upset is rooted in the fact that there are many more women who are in tech and are entrepreneurs who could run circles around Trump on how technology will impact the future of work."

Rachel Sklar, an entrepreneur who has campaigned for women to have more opportunities in the tech industry, added: "What an insult to the years and years of protesting how few women were invited to keynote... there are so many great, qualified women. Shame."

The BBC sought comment from several of CES's other featured speakers.

Only Mark Cuban, the entrepreneur and star of US TV series Shark Tank replied.

"I don't care one way or another," he said.

"No one has to go to her keynote if they don't want to."

For his part, Mr Shapiro suggested that Ms Trump had the credentials to warrant the honour.

This really doesn't seem to be a big deal, just people trying to bring ideological politics to an electronics show. Hopefully this won't cause any developers to cancel attendance or call for a real boycott, I just care about the games and any other cool announcements.

Behind the faux outrage its probably something like six fucking losers on Twitter who have complained without even knowing why.

They see 'Trump' and logic goes out the window. Which is precisely where these cunts should go, preferably from 45 floors above a solid concrete ground.

Buddy, let's no get ahead of ourselves.

Your eyes are too far apart. Nose is definitely crooked. The shape of your face is not aesthetically pleasing at all. You look like a 3/10 with make up in this photo. I don't even want to imagine what you look like without make up. I actually just threw up in my mouth, just thinking about it. Your head is too big (although that may be, because of your giraffe neck posture) . As for your hair, lol. Seriously, do something. You look like a horse. Stare at your face for more than 5 seconds, and you will see how ugly you are. The eyes which are too far apart is what ruins /damages an already ugly face even further. Unfortunately for you, that can't be surgically fixed, lol. You arms are way too long. lol at how they hang by your sides. Kind of reminds me of lurch. Don't even let me start on your pale complexion. It only works if you look hot. Unfortunately, you do not look hot. Its hard to sum up a creature like you in one word. 'UGLY ' would be unfair , since it doesn't reflect how repulsive you look. GROTESQUE is stretching it. But somewhere in between, is where you would be, on the scale of an average man. I'm sorry if my words seem a little harsh. Just so you know, I sugar coated this post as much as possible.

LOLOLO! Are we sure this person has ever been to an industry conference? In my experience Half the speakers are near worthless and have less exp/knowledge than their audience.

To be fair, presenting at a conference is tough. You don't write your speech for the most informed in the room, but rather the least, or close to while still providing good info. It's a tough task.

Regarding people's "women in tech" reactions, is this not a textbook example of "perfect is the enemy of the good"? Instead of being happy that a woman is presenting, some would rather not have a woman unless it is the optimal person! Cut off your nose to spite your face seems to fit as well.

She’s not the “right kind of woman”. These people are just a bunch of bullshitters that hide their toxicity behind a fake wall of virtue.

Virtue signaling is the shield they use to mask their own bigotry, racism, prejudices, sexism, select religious persecutions, etc..

Job creation advisor? What?! They just gave her title to legitimize her? That's stupid. Just call her a guest speaker, and let attendees chose whether or not they want to visit her panel.

But she doesn't deserve a keynote, she's not even an innovator in the industry.

I don't really see why she was invited or how her experience is relevant to CES. However the fauxrage mob is, as always, unpleasant and makes me hope CES goes through with it and has her there.

"I sugar coated this post as much as possible" should go down in Gaf history.

She could cosplay as Aya Brea. If she wants to talk then let her talk. It would be interesting to hear her thoughts over the montage of Call of Duty that her dad put together.

Have none of you ever been to a conference for your industry where they brought in a guest speaker who had zero experience in your field but was an interesting speaker all the same?

I used to work in Electrical Utilities and one year I went to a battery trade show (these are big Utility batteries not consumer batteries) and Marcus Luttrell was the guest speaker. He’s the real life soldier from the Mark Wahlburg movie Lone Survivor and he knows jack shit about batteries but was the hell of a speaker to listen to all the same.

I attended a mechanical contracting conference that had Dr. Robert Ballard (of Titanic and Bismarck fame) and he had the best stories (tricking first time divers that the condensation inside the mini sub was the sub leaking for comedic effects, and alluding to his classified time with the Navy as making the Russians very unhappy).

Cancel culture cunts are the biggest bunch of crybabies.
A 10/10 hot woman is invited to your nerd convention and people freak because of who her dad is (Best President in my lifetime btw.)

I'm super curious to hear...what makes Trump the GOAT?

was wondering about when some people would get upset about this, to tell you the truth, I thought it would have been sooner, but hey, they still managed to bring politics into everything anymore, and that is why we can't have nice things

You don't think the other "they" brought politics in first by having her at CES to begin with, it's only the people reacting negatively that brought politics in, yet everyone positive about it or in on the initiative to get her onboard doesn't? Lol?

If you don't want politics in CES you should support not having her there, lol.

Let people do what they want, if they wanna boycott, let them, how are you better for getting outraged over anybody's decision over anything THEY do? And if it was "trending" yet wasn't actually effective with just "some" people and didn't change attendance rates why care at all?

Let people react how and do what they want, lol.

i don't care if she goes either way

but i am curious. quick scan of her wikipedia page shows she was a model for a bit, had a failed attempt at a fashion company, her stint on the apprentice, and is the daughter of the president (obviously). why would anyone want to listen to her give a speech about anything?

correct. her getting invited and/or attending doesn't bother me and i think people getting offended over it is incredibly stupid. they should be able to invite anyone they want and anyone should be able to attend that want to

i just don't see her having anything interesting to present at a tech summit and i don't think her employment history suggests otherwise

Ah I see. That's fair. I read it as you thought she had nothing to offer period about anything. Which seemed a bit sexist and ignorant.

Her efforts in the Trump admin are almost entirely ignored by the mainstream media because covering them risks turning public opinion in favor of the admin.

I tend to watch White House events live or direct from the source because of how deceptively the administration is covered by most news outlets. I've seen members of various business communities and industries supporting her efforts to improve conditions for women, minorities and former felons, here and around the world. I suspect that would lend itself well to the gaming industry which is aiming to be more inclusive to women.

No she's speaking about jobs, tech jobs, and the impact they will have on the world in the future. As someone who is the daughter of Americas number one job creator atm, they believed she would be able to put together a good speech and lay out a vision of where these jobs will take us.

Did you think she got a job in the government legitimately? For that matter, do you think she was even suppose to get that job at all?

What can she say on that day that could be learned from, that doesn't involve illegal activity?
