Chicago will sue Trump administration over sanctuary cities grant threat

Chicago will sue the Trump administration on Monday, over threats to withhold public safety grant money from so-called sanctuary cities, mayor Rahm Emanuel announced on Sunday.

The federal lawsuit, which escalates a nationwide pushback against a federal immigration crackdown, comes less than two weeks after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the US justice department would strip cities of certain grant funds unless they agreed to allow authorities unlimited access to local jails and to provide 48 hours' notice before releasing anyone wanted for immigration violations.

How many times has Trump been sued as President so far? Seems like a lot. Has any of them went to court yet?

This will be a real challenge for sanctuary cities. I read up on this and it seems it was expertly announced by Bannon and Sessions in a very specific way cutting department of justice funding which while not the same as regular government funding, means sanctuary cities will either have to work with ICE and federal agents or risk losing that crucial funding they depend on. Possibly they could lose an appeals challenge, but they worded it in a way it will be hard for circuit and appellate courts to find a reason rooted in LAW as to why they should receive DoJ funding if they won't work them or are in violation of federal laws on immigration.

Even worse is with Gorsuch on the Supreme Court. It is why the repercussions of a Trump administration will be felt for decades.

Also for those thinking that the loss of money goes towards immigrations, according to another article "Chicago has used the federal grants to buy SWAT equipment, police vehicles, radios and Tasers. Last year, the program gave Chicago $2.3 million." Think about that in a city like Chicago.

The elf responds:

Sessions' barbed reply argued that record numbers of murders in Chicago in recent years were attributable at least in part to Emanuel's decision to stick with a sanctuary policy that encourages police to ignore the immigration status of those they encounter.

"No amount of federal taxpayer dollars will help a city that refuses to help its own residents," Sessions said. "To a degree perhaps unsurpassed by any other jurisdiction, the political leadership of Chicago has chosen deliberately and intentionally to adopt a policy that obstructs this country’s lawful immigration system."

The attorney general's combative statement, which accused Chicago officials of adopting "an official policy of protecting criminal aliens," is likely to be well received by President Donald Trump. He has regularly blasted Chicago over crime, accusing it of being too lax in its response to the surge in violence there.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson pushed back against the attorney general's portrayal.

"Undocumented immigrants are not driving violence in Chicago, and that's why I want our officers focused on community policing and not trying to be the immigration police," he said.
