Childhood Dream Cars vs Today

Your parents got you a PORSCHE at FIFTEEN??? Were they trying to kill you??

No wonder it had only liability, trying to insure a teen for a car like that must have been brutal.

Right? I have no idea what they were thinking honestly. Though it was not fast it was still easy to get it sideways but also taught me some car control early on. I'd load my friends up in the back and the passenger seat and we'd go rally driving on a gravel/dirt road around the city lake I lived close to. It almost ended up in the lake on... a couple of occasions. I think it was my dad wanting to re-live his love of cars and passing it down to me. I learned to drive on it and then took my driver's test in my mom's 95 Ford Windstar minivan.

2 days after I got my driver's license, while following a train of cars to the gym at the park for football practice I drifted it around a corner where everyone did the same. I ended up doing a 180 and ended with the rear right wheel popped up over the curb and in someone's yard. That could have fucked the transaxle royally.

Love the 2005 Honda S2000 back then and it still looks modern now
Living in Hong Kong, I had access to a lot of affordable (8-20k USD range) old "dream" cars of mine 10 ~ 15 years ago... But that place also seriously lacks cheap parking spaces and storage and sitting cars don't age well at all very quickly. And after the JDM hype revival, 90s japanese cars are all overpriced now anyway..

V12 E31 were cheap as dirt last I've checked

What I'd really want now is either one of these.... but practicality, constant traffic jams, no proper roads to enjoy driving and no cheap storage place.. nah

Mazda RX-7 and Honda S2000 were my dream cars back then .

These days, give me the freedom to go anywhere and self-sustain for weeks on end. These custom rigs are amazing from the 4wd technology, power and internet systems to fridge, storage and cooking solutions built right in.
*not me in the pic, check out the custom rig video though -

Early 2000’s corvette always appealed to me as a kid. I even had a corvette game on PS2 and played it all the time. Corvette is cool and fast but not ultra flashy like a lambo or ferrari. It’s a nice balance and somewhat affordable, which makes it a good “mid life crisis” purchase lol

I still kind of want one. A Mustang, too. I liked those classic 70’s Mustangs. My goal really is to own a Mustang one day, new or old.

I probably will just stick with my fuel efficient Toyota Camry though :p nowadays I just wanna buy a cheap Japanese dirt bike / dual sport motorcycle and tinker on it in my garage, I feel like that’s more fun and fulfilling than owning a really expensive car.

The Ford GT90 is such an underrated gem. My favorite exotic as a kid. Fuck the Countach, this thing had me stiff and leaking pee. The design language of this car also set the tone for future Ford models like the Ford Puma and Ford Ka. Two of my favorite Ford models of the 90's.
It was my choice of car when i was playing Rush 2

F40, testarossa, countach. Same cars as most 80s and 90s kids. Now that financial realities are clear I know I’ll never own a car like that. So, realistic dream cars include an e30 m3 (that one has actually become a reach with used car prices), or an m2. F355 is the current dream car I’ll never own

Ooh almost forgot the open wheel track toys like the radical sr3, Ariel atom, and to a lesser extent a caterham. All a pain in the Ass to insure in the US

My dream car has always been a 1973 Datsun 240z. My friends and I used to look up cars for sale in the classified ads and test drive them for fun. I drove something similar to this, and I fell in love:

My dad and I have always loved Datsun and Nissan sports cars, so this winter I bought a summer car (below) that I think is kind of a spiritual successor to a Z car - Infiniti G37. Well, at least for me as I have no technical ability or aptitude, so I figured this gets me halfway there as something reliable and fun as hell to drive:

Another very memorable test drive was a BMW 2002. Ugly as shit, but just a beautiful drive. The old couple that owned it took immaculate care of it, had just had it repainted and new clutch, tires, brakes, and all for $1,500. This was back in like 1991, but one of my biggest regrets:
