Childhood Dream Games that Actually Came Out

We were young gamers once, we said we "Can't wait until a game does this", what are your examples? Sucesses and Failures.

I came to this because I recently got a gut feeling that the full 3d Pokémon adventure game I always wanted must be out by now. My relationship with Pokémon is I know the original 151 from pokemon yellow and the original anime , ever since then I know almost nothing. I never played through another game, but always knew one day it will be a big 3d adventure. I may have also had Pokémon Blue first I don't remember. So I went to on the search for the Pokemon Scarlet, not finding it, and settling with Pokémon Shield.

First impression is there it is: A fully 3d Pokémon game just like on the Gameboy. And actually enjoyed myself grinding and leveling and evolving without having to need a guide. It is a breeze in difficulty which is something unlike I usually play, and it accomplishes its mission to start you on an adventure like how I pictured a 3d Pokémon would always be. The grade level writing at first shocked me. Some parts seem translated off ? But one just has to glance at the text and one gets the whole info. So having this game now and much older is off some years. But I don't feel any shame for finding myself actually doing the old school rpg gameplay.

So I am finally playing my childhood dream game. No interest in anything else in the series. Another game I dreamed up before it came out was uncharted, I pictured in my head how a 3d camera in TPS shooter should work and how one could make a grand game ,and how it could be better than FPS's before uncharted was announced and when it came out I was like "finally". PS3 made a lot possible.

What counts as childhood?

I was 17 when FFv13 was announced. Eventually came out as FF15 10 years later. Lots of missed opportunities, but overall I enjoyed it.

Not a specific game, but I would say modern VR. I was obsessed with the future possibilities after watching films such as The Lawnmower Man and Johnny Mnemonic. Being able to try one of those VR rigs in the late 90's at my local mall, also contributed to this. Now has modern VR lived up to my expectations? Not really, outside a few games. Rightfully so, production companies are fearful of massive investment in the space, and it shows.

I wasn’t a kid when Demons souls first came out but the remake was fantastic for me. It was on my Christmas list for my wife for years haha.

Just need Chrono Trigger and Ff6 to get a nice remake.

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, for me.
Good call. After seeing how well Nintendo did with Mario's 3D transformation, I was left wondering if Sonic would ever get the same treatment. Now Sonic Adventure was no Mario 64, but it looked so good (at the time) and did enough things right, that I was able to overlook many of the game's flaws.

Shenmue 3. I had been dreaming of them releasing that game since I hit the credits on Shenmue 2. I haven't played Shenmue 3 simply because it did nothing to progress the story. Massively disappointed.

Friday the 13th, and then it died, lmao. So unfortunate.

Since I was a kid I thought it'd be cool to have a game where players can be counselors or Jason and go against one another. I never thought we'd see the day, and we did, it was wild. On top of that, the game was great I thought, a little janky, but it was awesome. My favorite asymmetrical game we had in awhile, then it died. :(

RE2 Remake - how long was this requested? 20 years almost?

Oh and Assassin’s Creed Origins. Wanted an AC in Egypt since the dawn of the series - and it ended up being just what I always wanted.

Does "late teens" count? As a fan of the Ultima series (up to, but not necessarily including, 8), I was hoping that some day, Richard Garriott could get back to the series. Without the burden that is EA.

...then we got Shroud of the Avatar. Yeeeaah. Sometimes, it's just better to move on.

Believe it or not it's No Man's Sky. I always wanted a space exploration game and what it has become over the last several years it very close to what I dreamed of. EVE Online was pretty close but I didn't enjoy the MMO aspects and the fact that you need imaginary insurance on your digital ships. I didn't like the risk aspect at all. I'm not looking for that kind of realism.

KOTOR and the Jedi Knight series gave me the Star Wars fantasy I always wanted as a kid.

Don't know how good it's going to be, but for me Ninja Gaiden 4 was a crazy announcement to wake up to. Team Ninja + Platinum sounds like a dream collab.

Also, if it's true, the Oblivion remake could be wild if done right. That's another core game from my childhood.

The most recent example that came to mind is The Plucky Squire.

I’m sure there are others. Pokemon in 3D was definitely one back in the day.

I used to think about a certain type of fantasy game I'd like to play and then Demon's Souls came out and it was similar to what I had been imagining but really surpassed my own ideas. So that one was definitely it for me. Dark Souls was the cherry on top.

Resident Evil 2 Remake. I don’t know why Capcom is obsessed with the “Stalker” enemy I mean it was a great idea in RE3 but it has kinda ruined the formula for almost every game it appears in (RE7 was good), Other than that RE2 Remake is something I have wanted for 20 years.

This is a very good question I really haven't thought about...

For me the closest thing has been probably playing Project Wingman (the Ace Combat clone) using a VR headset, the only thing I missed was using the appropriate controllers I guess.

The Lunch Legend

GAF's Nicest Lunch Thief and Nosiest Dildo Archeologist
-GTA San Andreas
-Final Fantasy 7
-Shadow of The Colossus

All dream games.

There's more out there to discover, as well!
('cause I'm a radical dreamer)

I wanted an expansive open world JRPG, Xenoblade Chronicles basically delivered on that at a time when Final Fantasy XIII was making us run down hallways.
The only childhood dream game I can still remember is a fully 3D RPG where you explore a vast world (no specific setting). The closest series I can think of now is the Xenoblade series. I could say FFXV too but it was unfinished.
Edit: now that I think about it, FFVII Rebirth is pretty damn close too, but I haven't played it.

Shenmue 3 eventually became reality and was shit.
FF Versus XIII was being made as FFXV and was shit
Duke Nukem Forever eventually came out and was shit

Mass Effect though, that was sort of the game I always wanted. Rez in VR too.

Alone in the Dark 2024.

I've always been a fan of AITD, even if the series historically had some big gameplay issues.

AITD 2024 is the Lovercraftian/noir experience I always wanted. Sadly the studio went under but I love the game, played through it probably 6 times now. One of those games that feels like it's specifically designed for you (me).

Organ Quarter too. VR survival horror. I always wanted to be inside a classic era Survival Horror game, specifically RE96, but Organ Quarter satisfied that dream. What a pleasant surprise that first playthrough was.

Knights Vs. Samurais Vs. Vikings

Instead of being an RPG with character creation, meaningful choices and a Hero's Journey with an awesome story I got this shit.
Not exactly the same, but still awesome. There was a mod called Pirates, Vikings, and Knights for Source, and it was incredible, lol.

The Deadliest Warrior Chivalry expansion was pretty amazing too. (Pirates, Spartans, Vikings, and Samurais.)

I want a single player story brother. Not interested in this, thanks for sharing though.
