China has awarded Donald Trump a 10-year trademark for construction services in his own name, a decade after the businessman began his attempts to have the measure approved.

It is thought to be the first trademark awarded to Mr Trump’s real-estate business since he was elected.

It comes days after the US President said he would stick to the country’s “One China” policy, ending weeks of speculation he could break four decades of foreign policy by addressing Taiwan directly rather than as part of “One China”.

Mr Trump previously stirred up diplomatic concerns after he arranged a phone call with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen shortly after the 2016 election.

The call was the first by a US president-elect or president since Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979.

Following the phone call, China lodged a protest with US officials.

But last week, the White House confirmed that after a “lengthy phone call” with China President Xi Jinping, the White House said that the two “discussed numerous topics and President Trump agreed, at the request of President Xi, to honour our ‘One China’ policy”.

Mr Trump won the legal dispute over the right to use his name in China shortly after he was elected US President.

The trademark, which aims to provide real-estate-agent services in commercial and residential properties in China, was then provisionally approved after a year-long legal fight, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The reasons for Mr Trump’s victory in the case are unclear and come more than 10 years after Mr Trump first registered his trademark in China, in 2006.

The U-turn over Mr Trump's trademark shortly after his election has raised questions about the extent to which his political status may be helping his family business.

He has 49 pending trademark application in China and 77 have already been registered in his own name, most of which will come up for renewal during his term.

The US President critics say these business interests could be used by foreign government as leverage over Mr Trump. This would violate the first article of the Constitution, which bans holders of public office from receiving financial benefits from foreign governments unless explicitly approved by Congress.

Any special treatment from China would mean Mr Trump was effectively accepting gifts from Beijing.

Chief White House ethics lawyer under President George W Bush, Richard Painter, said: "A different conclusion might be reached if Trump had been treated like everyone else seeking a trademark, but the evidence does not point in that direction."

Alan Garten, chief legal officer of the Trump Organisation, said Mr Trump's trademark activity in China started well before his election and that Mr Trump handed over the management of his company to his children and a team of executives to remove himself from his business and its trademark.

China's State Administration for Industry and Commerce, which oversees the Trademark Office, and the foreign ministry could not be reached for comment.

Well, now we know the real reason for the attacks on free trade.

No kidding, the "CHINA!!" narrative had died down the past week or two.

This explains why.

Trump got what he wanted for his business.

There is always some form of corruption behind each of the President's rants against countries these days.

Worse then Tea Pot Dome but the GOP aren't going to do a thing.

Conflict of interest? On just this alone he has already violated the constitution. How he is still President is mind blowing.

Can't violate the constitution if you've never read it.

Fuck it, I'm officially with the "eight years" people. Nothing stopped him during the primaries, when we were certain it would. Nothing stopped him during the election, when we were sure it would. Nothing stops him. We're fucked. That's it.

hahaha if it was for his own business interests. I don't think it is, but it would be amazing (ly bad of course) if his whole China rants were to acquire some business leverage...

More like China got what they wanted. It's a very cheap price for them to pay to bribe the President of the United States.

What the fuck.

Surely this can lead to him being impeached, right?

There's literally dozens of things he's done since taking office that can lead to him being impeached. It's up to Congress to do it. And despite this fantasy people around here have of a GOP that really cares about anything besides the jizz McConnell and Ryan shot into their mouth and tell them to guzzle, they will never do it.

The GOP is stuck with Trump until he loses his base supporters.

There really isn't. Impeachment requires the President committing a serious crime. If there was proof that Trump traded away concessions on China for this trademark then yes that would be grounds for impeachment. You can't just hold up two things, say it looks shady and then file criminal charges. This isn't some bad law & order spinoff.

I fucking hate this guy so much, but at least now we know all his posturing is bullshit and all he wants are business deals, I'll take that over wars any day.

Impeachment requires the harmonious collaboration of the Congress, irrespective of the severity of the crime. Even if we did have strong enough evidence to bring forth an indictment, GOP lawmakers are too chickenshit and complacent to do anything about it.

Using the Presidency to line your pockets in various conflicts of interests is a serious crime. Being aware of treasonous activity, if not potentially involved in them, is a serious crime. And I can go on. There's plenty this man has done that could easily be deemed as impeachable, it wouldn't even be that hard to make a case, he basically handed the opportunity when he starkly refused to give up his businesses. But the GOP lead Congress won't do shit. They don't care.

On a normal presidency, Trump's conflicts of interest would be enough to cause a big scandal.

But what about clinton foudation.

It's hilarious how people were up in arms during the election and they not event bat an eye when the president has shown time and time again that he is a crooked mf.

I really don't like the fact that Chinese officials control the narrative now.

They can say "no comment" or "the negotiations were happening previously and we had no contact with Trump," but if they feel like it they can say, "we are giving preferential business treatment to Trump because he is the president," and it creates a huge scandal. So now Trump has this pressure point China can exploit.

The rest of the world has also learned that they can't rely on Trump because he can be so easily bribed. I doubt that China would ever claim that they bribed him, but they're going to reap the crap out of the indirect benefits.

Well, they can threaten to make that claim in order to get benefits, that's the problem.

Or they can make that claim should they simply find it useful to scandalise the US.

Seriously what the flying fuck? What the hell is wrong with America? You're not some third world country where that sort of shit is common and the people can't do anything about it???
