I despise Trump but I think it's clear if Obama had made a call to Taiwan this forum would be calling him brave and saying stuff like "He doesn't let China bully the USA, they can't stop us from talking to other nations"

Ahh yes, the ever used completely unlikely hypothetical situation used as a "comparison" to reality.

Of course.

International relations are complicated and the one china policy has been the status quo for over 35 years.

Trump also tweeted the US does not have to honor the one china policy.

It's a direct attack going against history that literally goes back centuries.

Taiwan is serious business to the Chinese.

On Sunday, President-elect Donald Trump told Fox News that he wouldn't feel "bound by a one-China policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade."

Using this as a bargaining chip is laughable and demonstrates a bewildering lack of understanding of the issue.

If trump starts a trade war welcome to a worldwide economic depression like the world has never seen, and there is a strong possibility that would lead to actual war in Taiwan.
i think the quote goes: when trades doesn't cross borders, armies do. or in case of a modern world war thermonuclear warheads.

You are kinda right.

This being a unlikely hypothetical situation is the saddest part. This call should've been made decades ago.

Trump are you going to take that? Just let them fly a bomber and wink in your direction? Fuck no, get off your ass and show them they can't just threaten you like that! Arm all the nukes, maybe fire one into that South China Sea just to let them know who's boss. No one threatens the US of A and gets away with it. If anyone tries to wine about you not even being President yet, tell them to fuck off. Those people probably thought you wouldn't win Pennsylvania and Michigan, so they don't get to say anything to you.

I like the China scale of it all:
Trump: Tweet
China: NUCLEAR BOMBER

It's funny.

Hillary, from her years of experience, knows every little detail that would annoy every single country in the world, and their potential reactions.

Then there's Trump, who pisses-off the most populous and most sensitive country in the world right off the bat.

Does Trump lose direct access to twitter in January?

You mean like how he's putting his businesses in a blind trust?

Being bullied by a nation that repeatedly crushes almost everything related to freedom isn't diplomacy, no matter who is president.

Diplomacy is not only about acting aggressively to other nations you feel may be bullies(though that is one way to possible achieve a level of diplomacy).

Diplomacy is about acting in a way to balance relations globally, with both Ally and Enemy nations.

But if you feel provoking an ally superpower is the way to go then more power to you I guess.

I don't think so. Pretty sure people would call him out on it too as it would be for no gain whatsoever. What a weird whataboutism/strawman.

Of course.

I prefer asking Trump supporters, "If Obama had done this, wouldn't you call him naive and stupid and terrible at foreign relations?"

I usually get a stuttered, "No, not necessarily..." but they know they're hypocrites in their hearts.

The US is no angel, more so with Trump administration in regards to climate change.

You spoke as if US is justified in every of its actions just because they don't see eye to eye with other countries. The US itself is extremely hostile to minority who makes up 30%+ of the population. Should other countries actively provoke and interfere in its internal affairs then?

Thats some really sad move china.

All jokes besides they did this stuff in the past so i wouldnt overreact just because of this alone.

To put it on a more simplistic, '80s teen movie level:

Trump is a self-absorbed hot shot who just transfered to a new high school. On his first day there, he hits on the ex-girlfriend of the school's rich bully, who hasn't quite gotten over her yet, and it doesn't go over well. Trump doubles down on his flirting. That rich bully is now slowly driving past his house at night.

Edit: Nah, I'm not gonna compare it to an '80s teen movie. In Hollywood everything usually works out in the end. I'm gonna say this is more "Degrassi".

Exactly but in this case, the probable collision between the bully & the hot shot may end up setting the whole school on fire with all the students & faculty still inside.

Or they might just posture and bruise each other's ego, and leave with small cuts and a mildly bloody lip, no harm no foul.

I just like to fear the worst and hope for the best.

If anything we should all overreact to everything Trump does, otherwise he and his cabinet are gonna keep pushing the envelope until it drop off the table.

I actually think this kind of thing could have some benefit with Trump as President. (by accident rather than design, granted)

I know how delicate the relations are and diplomacy works a certain way...but it doesn't mean it's the right way.

The President of the US should be able to speak to someone on the phone without people getting their knickers in a twist.

Any verification on whether the event that happened 18 months ago was a nuclear-capable airplane?

Its amazing how this story likely because of trump has exploded yet the other instances where china has flown their nuclear bomber into the south china sea and even into the pacific are harder to find. I had to modify my search to not include recent news because I kept getting flooded with the same story. But yes China has sent out their nuclear bomber on similar flights in that area prior to trump.

I never watched much Degrassi, in its original '80s form, but shit got real on that show.

Also, now I'm imagining the ending of Heathers. Or Carrie.

China's response to trump saying not bound by one china policy:

China's response was measured but clear: co-operation with the US "would be out of the question" if Trump doesn't adhere to the 'one China' policy -- a cornerstone of bilateral relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in the 1970s.
"I want to stress that the Taiwan question has a bearing on China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/12/12/politics/china-trump-one-china-reaction/index.html

China does not even have diplomatic relations with countries that recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation. Trump absolutely is not going to get anywhere attempting to use this a bargaining chip.

Yeah, the "oh he doesn't really mean that" starts getting less cute when you've got language and culture barriers making the "joke" less clear.

The President of the US should be able to speak to someone on the phone without people getting their knickers in a twist.

Ideally, that should be the case for all nations but since everyone acts with their own best interests in mind, that ends up not happening.

Bringing China along in talks involving Taiwan is the practical thing to do, even if its not the ideal or pleasant thing to do.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights

This thread is already off to a great start with the lol china dumb it was phone call!1 without knowing Why it's an issue in the first place or how diplomacy is incredibly delicate.

Phone call doesn't matter, right guys? Nope, all just hunky dory.

There's a fucking reason we have diplomats who specialize in...wait for it.....diplomacy, that's right. Knowing how to engage with other people from other cultures who just so happen to possess nuclear fucking weapons.

People were in the thread about his tweets to china going "Well we have to do SOMETHING about the SCS... Do you all have any better ideas!?"

Would love to see those defenders in here explaining how this is reasonable.

All this.

Exactly what some of us were trying to say in that other thread.

Its amazing how this story likely because of trump has exploded yet the other instances where china has flown their nuclear bomber into the south china sea and even into the pacific are harder to find. Maybe if Trump has any type of political background we wouldnt be worried over the stuff he does. The stupid stuff he does.

This flight according to the OP extended in further than previous ones...it could all be a message. And I would hope that Trump and Co. err on the side of caution instead of oh its nothing.

Oh I'm sure it is a message but its also a message that predates Trump seeing as this has been an ongoing issue. So its more of a reminder than anything. With that said I sincerely hope they take it seriously.

They've done this before, so screw China. They (or any other country) should never be able to dictate who we can or can't talk to. Glad to see President-Elect Trump not bowing to them.

Let the isolationism flow through you. Good. The hate is swelling, use it. Give in to the trade war.

China thinks flying a nuclear bomber over their little seas will send a message to me. Sad! I'll do you one better.

I think a rule should be implemented that parody Trump tweets are not allowed. It is literally impossible to determine which are real and which are satire without going to his twitter feed and verifying.

So many people without the slightest clue as to how international diplomacy works and how it keeps us all from being dead.

Let's say all of Obama's work towards normalizing relations with Cuba goes sour under Trump. Let's also say China, in that hypothetical situation, decides to sell a metric shit ton of weapons to Cuba, going right through the US's porous blockade. How would the US react?

China has been showing increasing force in the SE china sea consistently. This is nothing new. It was likely scheduled anyways. This instance only stands out because China is attempting to capitalize on the conditions around US internal political dialog, fuel our frustrations and encourage future political missteps. These people are not our friends. They're playing us right now.

China threatens nuclear war because of one phone call? I don't support Trump at all but what exactly is this doing in China's favor? What an overreaction.

China have probably spotted a weakness in American foreign policy, and they are going to take as much power in the next four -maybe eight- years until we end up with a competant president that understands how the world works. China clearly don't want a war, but they do want to push the United States as far as possible.

Fuck China.

If it came to it, i'd gladly stand behind Trump against them.

Well sure, but the fact is that China are only doing this because the US has presumably elected a leader that is perceived as a weak diplomat, I don't really see how Trump's actions are going to roll back China's actions.
