China is force-installing spyware onto Muslim citizens' phones

China has ramped up surveillance measures in Xinjiang, home to much of its Muslim minority population, according to reports from Radio Free Asia.

Authorities sent out a notice over a week ago instructing citizens to install a "surveillance app" on their phones, and are conducting spot checks in the region to ensure that residents have it.

The notice, written in Uyghur and Chinese, was sent by WeChat to residents in Urumqi, Xinjiang's capital.

Android users were instructed to scan the QR code in order to install the Jingwang app that would, as authorities claimed, "automatically detect terrorist and illegal religious videos, images, e-books and electronic documents" stored in the phone. If illegal content was detected, users would be ordered to delete them.

Users who deleted, or did not install the app, would be detained for up to 10 days, according to social media users.

The app reportedly scans for the MD5 digital signatures of media files in the phone, and matches them to a stored database of offending files classified by the government as illegal "terrorist-related" media.

Jinwang also keeps a copy of Weibo and WeChat records, as well as a record of IMEI numbers, SIM card data and Wifi login data. The records are then sent to a server.

This move is the latest in digital surveillance in Urumqi. In March, government workers were asked to sign an agreement have "terrorist-related" media content, while the police sprung a surprise spot check on a group of nursing students.

That's some next level shit. If you're a Chinese Muslim, what... You just put up with this? How hard is it for people in this community to emigrate?

Really, it's just getting too easy for the PRC to target the privacy and well-being of a minority region and its people via WeChat and the other few large networks consolidating in China. And I'm not surprised Jinping's administration is focusing on this, since it's one way to test-pilot similar campaigns and lockdown on China Proper.

But being a Muslim doesn't automatically mean being a terrorist! Anyone can be a terrorist if they murder and harm innocents for political aim!

Why don't people understand this?

Why don't people use logic and common sense? Probably doesn't fit their agenda.

Also someone outside China, sacrifice yourself and scan the QR code in the article and see if it transmits your data.

Can you get iPhones xinjiang? I mean they might be too expensive and China would probably force Apple to submit if they became popular but this is all sorts of fucked up.

If it's just checking the md5, seems pretty easy to circumvent by just having a program to transmit those images between users that modifies them just a tiny bit before storing them in the phone, thus altering the md5 of the final image/document.

Plus nowadays it's pretty easy to create md5 collisions, which someone could do just to keep triggering false alarms.

This has nothing to do with West's attitudes on Muslims. This is more to do with Xinjiang being an ethnically and culturally different area that has been at odds with China for centuries but has been incorporated into China by gunpoint. As a result there is a lot of unrest and terrorism goes along with that.

The political situation in Xinjiang isn't really the same thing as in the West's affairs with Muslims. The Uyghur are in a similar position as Tibet.

Yea.

Independence will never occur for East Turkestan/Xinjiang or Tibet.

China is way too powerful for that to ever occur now.

No need for apologies, the overall sentiment of your original post is still accurate.

To add to this, and answer Kinitari's post above, Xinjiang is a combination of landlocked desert and mountains. It's one of China's poorest regions, and areas where a Han population isn't as prevalent get the even shorter end of the stick. So not exactly the most viable position in which to try and find a way out of the country, at least legally. Add in the classic caveat of it providing numerous raw resources - including yes, oil - and the Chinese government's grip on the region is going to remain strong, and there's not much that can be done about it.

The Hui who are ethnically Chinese Muslims, are treated very differently by Chinese authorities. So this isn't strictly about Islam.

I just assumed China did this to everyone's phones.

You assumed China jails everyone if they don't install a spying app on their phone? Nope, that's just for this oppressed minority.

It has nothing to do with terrorism. Just Chinas obsession with spying and control. This is a group of people who they strip of land and resources, and when land is stolen protests happen, this frightens China.

The UN and wold community need to raise the issue, because that is the only thing that really keeps China even a little bit in check.

Yeah, like others have said, this is a part of China that it's government rules by an iron fist.

It's shit but this is China.

China is hard at work on facial recognition surveillance and its big brother "citizen" score is live. You want to know how to repress people in the 21st century then China is the professor of a 500 level course on it.

And some people here would prefer a China led world over the US domination

And some people here would prefer that people in foreign countries continue to get bombed to eternity i guess, because who care, they're foreign.

Or overturn elected governments to install dictatorships.

Or spy all the rest of the world , muslims or not.

US best!!!111!ONEONE11!!1!

Actual terrorists will just not use phones, or use burner phones to plan their attacks.

This does nothing but increase opression of the Uighur people in China.

The MD5 thing is nothing short of stupid, you can easily change a bit in a file...

How to find a positive aspect to this? Improvement in cell batteries? Because I can see this draining batteries fast ;)

Honest people don't have anything to fear from this. (/s)

So all the innocent Muslims (99.999999999999%) get tracked by the government and any would-be terrorists predictably get burner phones...

What a fanatastic idea!

Well, the Uyghurs are considered second-class citizens. I doubt China cares much if they are continuously oppressed.

I mean, look at this shit. They have no rights.

I really doubt China is expecting to actually catch anyone with this. The innocent citizens ARE their targets - this is just a reminder, whenever you open up your phone, that the government owns you.

It's to demoralize any hope of resistance, peaceful OR violent.

I hate the Chinese government more and more each passing day. Jesus fuck. Shit almost makes me glad I'm in Turkey, and that's saying something.

Anyone admiring the Chinese economy or society should be forced to take a course in just how much Orwellian surveillance there is to stop any meaningful opposition ever coalescing.
None of the huge Chinese tech companies are able to operate without giving the government whatever they want whenever they want it.
