China's the one always provoking everyone else, finally standing up to them might be a good thing...

What's going to intimidate China, from a US perspective, isn't military fortitude, but economic fortitude. Basically, if Trump makes us less reliant on China economically, it makes them a lot more vulnerable and will only speed up China's economic decline, which is already fast approaching (Though many don't realize it yet).

He's not actually wrong.

However, a slowing economy/shifting economy doesn't mean China is collapsing, which everyone has been screaming about the last decade plus.

And the twist is that a somehow underperforming Chinese economy is the lastest thing the USA wants because that will not bring any jobs back but just would bring more Americans out of jobs.

There is no leverage, there is no chicken game, just Trump who will show the world what kind of idiot he is with his isolatism.

China is acting like they're the aggrieved party in this.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/17/world/asia/china-us-drone.html

But the Defense Ministry hinted that the highly charged incident would not be solved easily. “The Chinese side has maintained communication with the U.S. over this matter and during this process it is inappropriate for the U.S. to exaggerate the matter unilaterally and publicly,” the statement said. The American reaction, it said, is “not conducive to solving the problem smoothly. We hereby express regrets for that.”

Although the ministry said the drone would be returned to the United States in a “proper way,” the statement stopped short of saying when or how or if the device, which Chinese and American analysts said was most likely used for intelligence gathering against Chinese submarine activity in contested waters, would be handed back.

In a stern tone, the Defense Ministry scolded the United States over what it called its longstanding practice of conducting “close-in reconnaissance and military surveys” in waters claimed by China.

Fuck China. They claim waters that are clearly not their own and act like they can do whatever they want within those waters.

Can anyone guess why Trump thinks this is a good idea?

Sure, you can selective pick your sources while ignoring the really important organizations and institutes.

Umm... what? Who would you choose as your "important organizations" and "institutes"?

This is sort of my job.

If you are to evaluate China's growth you need to look at proxies for GDP that the local leaders have less of an incentive to fake and are much harder to do such as energy consumption and rail volumes.

While the world is going into full "let's make fun of the USA" mode, certain other countries are going into "let's take advantage of their weak/dumb president" mode for the next couple years.

oh boy what a mistake you guys have made over there

This isn't Trumps fault. China knows this is their last month to do whatever they want without consequences. Obama's the kid who gets shoved into lockers for no reason other than he won't do anything about it.

You are baiscally arguing there is an alternate economic model than glibalization in 21st centurey when in face there isn't.

Trump practically just said "keep it! We don't want it anyway!"

I don't know why people think he's going to be such a tough guy.

Actually, expect Republicans to be very hawkish over China next year.

For the rest of us that's a great thing. For some reason, Obama gets away with murder - off the top of my head: increasing military budget, untold drone strikes and all the collateral damage that brings, increasing ties with evil empire Saudi Arabia etc etc

At least now people are going to see the US government for what it really is.

Thanks.

The warning signs are flashing right now and the finance community is watching with bated breath to see how the government reacts to a crisis of their own doing. They have essentially built this bubble in an attempt to save "face" rather than let the economy take its required lumps. Weak data is hidden and failing loans are refinanced with additional debt.

That didn't take long.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-38376037

A US underwater drone seized by China last week has now been returned, the Pentagon has confirmed.

The drone was handed over close to the location it was seized, some 92km north-west of Subic Bay.

A statement said the US will "fly, sail, and operate in the South China Sea" where international law allows.

China captured the vessel in international waters last Thursday, in one of the most serious confrontations between the powers in decades.

"After friendly consultations between the Chinese and U.S. sides, the handover was smoothly completed at midday", China's defence ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
