Chipotle is considering adding new menu items to win back customers as sales plunge in the wake of E. coli outbreaks that affected restaurants across the country.

One of the first items that Chipotle could add is chorizo, a spicy pork and chicken blend, Chipotle executives said on a call with analysts on Tuesday.

The company is hoping that chorizo and other new menu additions will draw back its most loyal customers.

A test of chorizo in Kansas City last year was "very, very popular with our loyal customers," Chipotle co-CEO Monty Moran said. The company is hoping that the addition of chorizo will "make our loyal customers come more often," he said.

Chipotle's revenue dropped 23.4% to $834.5 million in the first quarter, the company reported on Tuesday. Same-store sales dropped nearly 30%.

The decision to add menu items goes against one of Chipotle's core business strategies.

I vaguely remember them testing Chorizo in my region a few years ago. I wonder if that's the same recipe or a new one?

Chipotle has always prided itself on its simple menu. But it seems a horrible quarter and unable to shake its food poisoning scares are gonna force it to back down on that commitment.

I've always loved their simple menu. It's one of the things I like about other chains like In N Out as well.

McDonalds's, which has also struggled but for different reasons, has bloated and mess of a menu these days.

More vegetarian options would be nice. I'm getting tired of sofritas & guac. Although, I can imagine a chorizo burrito being fucking delicious.

I wish they had enchilada-style burritos. Cafe Rio eats Chipotle's lunch between those and nachos with that slow-cooked chicken, yum!

I don't really consider adding chorizo as adding a whole menu item. You order the same items just with another option of protein.I welcome the idea

Some of their best items are in the secret menu anyway and those you actually do have to cook or prepare differently

Chorizo is getting too common to be special, and doesn't hold the candle to authentic foods with it.

Just stick to stealing concepts like tortilla/hardshell "stacks". That would be good with some barbacoa.

The one near work has been quiet the last few times I went. The food poisoning news didn't seem to harm business. I think the fad might be ending.

I don't understand why there's no nachos on the menu when they have 100% of the ingredients. I order a burrito bowl and a bag of chips and have to put em together myself.

They also need queso.

Everything they have just feels like a lower quality version of other places. Their tortillas aren't fresh, their corn salsa tastes like canned corn, and all the other salsas just aren't flavorful or mesh together well. You'd think given their large presence they would be at least qdoba level. My ranking peaks with Panchero's, but that might be just on my local employees.

Stop making me ask for more rice. It's like the most abundant food source in the world. It's not going to bankrupt your store if you put more rice on my burrito.

Put nachos on the menu. Put queso on the menu.

Actually, I'll just eat at a real Mexican restaurant, anyway. Carry on.

To be honest, their food just isn't that great. If I've got a coupon or someone else is buying, fine, I can load it up with enough extras but...meh. And their anti-GMO bullshit kind of pisses me off.

Rice in burritos is an abomination. I'd remove it from all menus if I was President.

Secret menu items are super fucking annoying. Just put it on the damn menu already and let me know I can order it.

I'd like it if they'd expand to Alaska... they would do gangbuster up here, and have zero negative mojo going on since ZERO stores are here to be affected by whatever bug of the week they are currently serving.

This is so easy: free guac. All you literally have to do is print two words in big bold letters in billboards all over the country.

The answer is obvious

I've always wanted them to add a queso dip to their menu to go along with their chips.

Every time I get the chips there they are always some degree of stale. I bet they would go through their chips a lot faster with a queso dip, thus leading to fresher chips. I mean, they do fry them in house don't they?
