Chris Keegan on PS3 in PSM2

Quoting a magazine's inane speculation now?

*cough*
"One of the basic premises of the Xbox is to put the power in the hands of the artist," Blackley said, which is why Xbox developers "are achieving a level of visual detail you really get in 'Toy Story.'"

Did Sony ever actually say a Playstation could rival Toy Story graphics?

its funny that sony never say that but microsoft does it

We have the movie CG comparisons, the insane hate and doubt, the complete and utter lack of tangible evidence for/against, and a graphics chip completely shrouded in mystery. All we need now is Trip Hawkins with some printing-press-esque remarks to complete the circle that was 1999. :D PEACE.

Sony did compare the PS2, in some way, to Toy Story in the Graphics Synthesizer press release way back when. Don't quote me on that, but if my memory serves me correctly, they definitely had the name Toy Story in there. But who really cares anyway? This comment isn't from Sony. And I personally hope it's true, b/c I don't think graphics have hit anywhere near their peak. FFS, Nintendo should be giving us hardware even better than that...if their business model allowed it. PEACE.

I don't like the fact that he is saying that if the PS3 came out in 1998 it would be the most powerful supercomputer, that is seven years ago and has nothing to do with today. Live in the now, man! Live in the now!

I think people aren't going to buy these nonsense numbers like 250x more powerful than PS2 or whatever MS is saying. It helps gear up the fanboys but it isn't very realistic.

Back at GDC 1999 in San Jose (I was there) when SCEA announced "the next generation PlayStation" three weeks after the "Glimpse of the Future" expo in Japan, Sony mentioned the new PlayStation would have "Film-Like" graphics.....I remember the quote in the Press Release like it was yesterday....

Sony was smart to say that as "Film-Like" graphics are open to quite a range of interpretation...

This is quite unlike dumbass Seamus Blackley who Said:

Also from that same article:
Gates and Seamus Blackley, head of Microsoft's Xbox division, ran demonstrations of several Xbox titles, which featured detailed graphics and smooth animation that looked more like a Disney movie than current video games.

:lol

Meh, I was looking for the press release on the various SCE pages, but those rat bastards dropped their archives prior to 2001. But you are spot-on, KLee. Here's the excerpt:

Source: Otherland.com has the press releases from 3/4/99
The current PlayStation introduced the concept of the Graphics Synthesizer via the real-time calculation and rendering of a 3D object. This new GS rendering processor is the ultimate incarnation of this concept – delivering unrivaled graphics performance and capability. The rendering function was enhanced to generate image data that supports NTSC/PAL television, High Definition Digital TV and VESA output standards. The quality of the resulting screen image is comparable to movie-quality 3D graphics in real time.

Not a single reference to Toy Story in any of those press releases. And that's all three from that day. So please please please, stfu and let this one go, guys. MS is the only one to compare to Toy Story, ironically. PEACE.
