Finally. Nexus Q was the dumbest idea. This is exactly what we wanted. Other than full mirroring which drains battery, phone resources, and at this point requires devices to be physically connected if you want a perfect experience. I'd like to see the Miracast thing catch on (if it actually works well), but the internet connected dongle is an interesting alternative.

The problem I have is everything already supports those now with no external device (tablet, phone) required. It's another proprietary device in a sea of proprietary media devices. It's the Google equivalent of an Apple TV but less functional.

You'd think they'd get onboard something like Miracast and make a dongle for that that actually does work with most devices and is industry standard. Instead we have an awkward cloud-based solution that only works with internet enabled media streaming on a per service basis.

It's different though. Miracast is "wireless HDMI", so to speak. Miracast receiver doesn't stream from internet, but this thing can.

I have Netflix and YouTube functionality on my TV already. So, what would be the draws of this for someone like me?

I'm thinking:

1. Entire Google Play Music collection playable through my sound system.
2. Ability to beam web video to TV.
3. Ability to beam web pages to TV (though I rarely could see myself doing this).

Anyone else have any recommendations. I'm thinking I'll buy it anyway based on the price alone, but I'm trying to figure out the marginal benefit of it.

Being able to stream any Chrome tab is pretty nice and means it could (theoretically) work with anything.

Which apps? Most apps are just packaged things already available on the web for your mobile device. Why worry about an app if you can just stream it from a browser? HBO GO? Hulu? Amazon Instant? Max Go? Any streaming website? Its more useful then apps. The only downside is that you would need a laptop for that functionality instead of just carrying around your phone and tablet.

I find most Netflix and YouTube apps built into a TV to have a cumbersome or slow interface. It's just much faster and easier to do it from a laptop IMO. Especially if it's something I'm already using and want to show someone else in the room.

It doesn't broadcast from the device, so it's not suitable for screen sharing and things like that. Basically it tries to pull the same stream and sync it with the device.

Probably not. It's not streaming from your phone/tablet device to the TV. Your phone is telling the TV "Here is the link to the thing I want to watch" I don't think the dongle has much power beyond being able to decode and run video. I guess some games could run on it, but I don't know the details of how any of that would work. RAM etc.

Which makes me wonder how the chrome tab thing works. How do you scroll? If you scroll on your PC does it then scrolls on the TV?

Yeah there should be no difference to chromecast if it's coming from a local network versus the internet at large right? If Google can make this thing as easy and open for devs as possible I could see a lot of apps doing some cool things.
