Churches scare the hell out of anyone else?

Not a dis on religion. I believe in god myself.

I've only ever been into a traditional church/cathedral a few times in my life. Grew up regularly going to Kingdom Halls, though I haven't been in about 6 years.

It seems like whenever I went to one with a friends family or funeral they always terrify me. From the stained glass, to the statues. From the wailing preacher to the peole writhing on the floor in the front. Everytime I've set foot in a church I get real uneasy. I was in Alabama last weekend and the amount of churches that looked like Draculas crib was insane.

The craziest one I've ever seen was coming back home through Ohio. There was a church with this HUGE Jesus bust holding a cross in the middle of a lake. If I was a kid and had to pass that every Sunday I just couldn't do it.

There are some real gothic, depressing ones, but I've seen quite a few color, and impressive ones as well. It's the same as anything else.

We have a really nice traditional church in my neighborhood. Who knows how long it will be here if the Section 8 plague keeps ruining the neighborhood. :/

My dream, when I become independently wealthy, is to buy a nicely constructed abandoned church and live in it. Churchs have great acoustics and I can't wait to rock out to some power metal on my altar of metal. :lol

I've also considered buying a nicely built abandoned church in the ghetto just to scare the living hell out of the residents. Also building an underground tunnel so that visitors that enter never leave the building - to the knowledge of the passerby and nosey neighbor. ^_^

I find the people in my step fathers church to be genuinely scary actually.

"to the peole writhing on the floor in the front"

Umm, WTF?

Anyway, scared of chruches? Hell no. I love churches. Both attending services, and just visiting prominent churches on trips. I visited the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (I think) I New York City on my band trip, the Crystal Cathedral in California, and the first church in the Western Hemisphere in Santo Domingo, when I was in the Dominican Republic.

In grade 9 I was pretty much forced to go to weekly mass. I remember there being a massive crucifix hanging from the ceiling over the altar. I tried to telekinetically shake it loose so that it may crush the priest and end the mass early. It never seemed to work. Thinking back, I was quite the angsty youth. I blame heavy metal.

The church itself was very peaceful and beautiful. Our masses were very calm and conservative. There were no wailing preachers or or writhing about there. Somewhat boring, even.

Oh yeah, fun church story. I was sent to Catholic school as a child (Which explains my proclivity for drawing dirty pictures of nuns, no?) and every Wednesday we would go to mass. Well it's a good thing my parents wasted all that money sending me to a private school, so that the school could not supply amenities like - oh, air conditioning! Too busy grinding God into our skulls.

Anyhow. . .

I was in mass one summer day and suddenly, I felt a lightness overcome me. It became increasingly difficult to keep my thoughts about me, and I started to have visions of soaring over serene blue skies filled with clouds. All the while thinking of this stupid radio controlled air plane I wanted for Christmas (and fortunately never received).

Next thing I know, I wake up in the principles office with an ice pack on my head.

Fainted from the suffocating heat of the church.

God: 1
Air Conditioning: 0

If you're not going to put AC in your god damned church, then you had best lure in some of the hot local Polak immigrant gals, and put them in sexy nun bikinis. >:|

My thing with churches nowadays is the heavy focus on the end times talk. Yes I understand we may be in the endtimes but even if we are I don't like being reminded about it every time I go to church.

On a related note we got one of those speeches at my baccalaureate (however its spelled). Nothing like warning a bunch of high school grads their futures are doomed and to repent now. (it was a seniors dad who was preacher at a church who gave the speech).

That's because the blood of the anti-christ flows through your viens.

I find them beautiful.
I went to the Basilica in St. Louis and it was stunning. The entire interior is done in mosaic.
Everything you see here is mosaic.

Yeah man, not all churches are the same. Go to a baptist church, a prebyterian church, a catholic church, a methodist church, a lutheran church, an assemblies of God church, an episcopal church, a "christian chruch" church, etc. They're all pretty different.

Kind of, yes. Not in so much scary, but just profoundly depressing on a number of levels. I think the part of that scares me the most are people that really believe in a god (Americans anyway)...but then I have a very negative opinion of religion to begin with. Even when I go to Europe and get dragged into cathedrals and such, I just can't enjoy them and yeah, part of that stems from them being pretty creepy.

There's a chuch by the pizza place I got to every so often. It's a drab gary brick building, compelte with barred windows. I know it's a church because of the sign, which reads: "Hope Light Curch". It exudes fear, and unease as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure if there's ever a major ploy to rest control of the universe from the dark demons of the nega-verse this place will be where the charge is lead from.

they creep me out... everything from the Jesus figure to the stained-glass to the maroonish-red carpet (well the one i visited any way).
could be that i'm not a Christian and never entered churches regularly.
nothing against Christianity though.

Many churches are designed to instill reverence, which is like fear, you know like the "fear of the Lord", except infused with protection/love. It's like in the old testament, I'm sure a pillar of fire reaching to the heavens is a rather intimidating thing, but to the israelites it was also what saved them from the egyptian army, it was God with them. But I suppose if you weren't raised to experience this somewhat complex emotion, and take no identity as God's loved child, you may just get the vibe of straight fear.

I'm really in awe of gothic church design. Its got that "macabre pretty" thing going for it. I wouldn't want to live in a place like that, though. Just visiting and seeing the sights and details in everything is enough for me.

I used to go to a really old church when I was a kid. Huge, huge, stone church. It was cool. Cold during the winter, but cool.

If you REALLY wanna enjoy a church, play some Shadow Hearts before you visit one.

See I don't follow a religion, but I rather like churches I must say. Being married to a Greek, there is always some christening or wedding or something going on. The Greek Orthodox churches are rather gaudy, I think Catholic ones are much prettier. But regardless of what church it is, I like the smell of the candles and the feeling in the room, and I just find there is a peacefulness about them.
