Cinemaworld to temporary close US and UK screens

We could be seeing the end of theaters. Yes temporary. But what happens after 2 years of no cinema? Will people go back ? Maybe some will but it could become a niche. Or of course they could become bigger than ever from pent up demand ?

Sucks for everyone who worked with or at these cinemas.

Well on the bright side it could lead to lower budget movies, you know the mid range stuff you used to get. Also lower ticket prices and concession prices. Everybody involved has been gouging the customers more and more for years.

Studios still need theaters. If streaming was so profitable, every blockbuster worth a shit wouldn’t be punted back repeatedly due to the pandemic. They want over a billion dollar box office numbers worldwide.

All theater lovers need to move to China. China will just keep their cinemas open and Hollywood loves that Yuen.

The reason snacks and such are expensive is because it's how the cinema makes money. The ticket sales are split to hugely favour the studio with many cinemas barely breaking even when you take away the income from the refreshments. Add in the declining ticket sales due to covid and they likely make a loss based on tickets alone.

I know, I worked in a multiplex for five years.

I think the studios are happy to kill off cinema chains. Especially Disney. I think in the future, cinema's heart will lie with boutique upmarket joints with beer, super comfy chairs. Days of mass-market Odeon dredges are over.

Government sure doesn't care about economy and jobs. Oh wait, during lockdown only the giant Walmarts, Costco grocers, and fast food joints were open.

Who knew a burrito place would be green lit ok to open but opticians and physiotherapy centres would be forced closed.

Enjoy Netflix folks because back to normal business isn;t happening anytime soon.

Cineworld was 232 (pence I think) in Jan. They dropped like a rock due to lock down. Was at 40. Now down 33% to 26.

Great job gov. Where's all those covid bail out funds for businesses which were mandated to shut down?

Sorry but the movie studios are equally culpable, with a lot of them holding back films. If you want us to go to the cinema, you gotta put stuff out on the regular that we want to see. My cineworld is showing the fucking Rocky movies every night. They're better off closed if that's all the cinemas have to offer.

I won’t step into any business that requires me to wear a mask unless it’s to buy bare essentials. I don’t give a fuck what movie it is, if I have to wear a mask for the screening then screw that shit. Close down.

I no longer enjoyed going to the cinema pre-Covid, especially for anything over two hours. By the end I’m extremely uncomfortable.

For a long time I’ve been hoping the industry would end this torture by allowing home streaming alongside cinema releases. The long wait for home releases is the only reason I ever choose to go but I mostly don’t bother. I didn’t for Tenet and wouldn’t have for Bond.

Being selfish, I would not be sorry to see all these cinema chains go for good and leave independent ones behind for those who still care about the experience of sitting in an uncomfortable seat alongside someone munching on popcorn in 2020.

Neva would they do that ... you won’t make enough money , tickets are expensive. But I feel ya, make it 5 - 7 bucks and it would sell or stream amazingly.

I love how everything was forced to close except big ass stores like Walmart(which were still packed with wall to wall people). These state governors who created this mess need to be removed from this earth as payment for the tens of millions of people they fucked.

Yup.

And they all had giant sales and profits reports for Q2 as everyone still needed to buy shit and sales all got funneled to the big guys. Expect another juicy Q3 earnings report from the big guys.

When all the big guys are boosting hourly wages $1-2/hr for workers yet still made record profits due to demand, it goes to show how crazy the buying was. And it got skewed to the corporate giants.

The more lockdowns the better. They know they'll get the green light to stay open.

The government didn't think either what kind of place to shut down. In my area, it seemed any place that sold food was allowed to be open. Whether it's a grocery store (makes sense) or KFC/Taco Bell (online ordering and pick up allowed?!?!) how the hell does KFC stay open?

Yet I'd drive by strip malls mostly shut down and opticians, physiotherapy, and dental offices were closed.

I don't know about you, but it sure seems more important to have those medical places open than a shop selling fried chicken and taco supremes.

open everything up. Inform the people of the risks of going out, tell them how they can mitigate, but let THE PEOPLE DECIDE. Fuck the government.

People will get used to renting on demand over the holidays and the movie theater business will never be able to compete with renting a new movie for $20 compared to a $50+ theater visit.

Ever since I bought a 4K TV I've thought less and less about going to the cinema.

I only really go to movies I really really feel I need to see in 3D or something. Otherwise I'm just not bothered.

It's becoming a vicious cycle at this point.

1. People don't really want to go to the movies because of the fear of getting COVID or they just don't want to wear a mask.

2. People probably just can't afford it as much thanks to the Pandemic's impact on the economy

3. Major studios are holding back ready to release movies in fear of loosing too much money, so the people who still want to go (like myself) have all but shit to watch.

Studio greed will kill a lot of them off. Constantly delaying Blockbusters so they can release at the "opportune time" means that no-one's keeping the chains afloat. People aren't rushing out in droves to pay to see Akira and Rocky.
