One of the best films I've seen all year! Discuss!

"Haahahahah, woot!"

I liked it, I thought it was good. But it was really hyped for me so I left with, and still hold, a feeling of 'overrated' on it.

Has anyone seen Carandiru?

Overhyped? :(

I'd only heard it by name many moons before and paid it no heed.

Went to see AVP in the cinemas tonight and came back relatively disappointed. Friend had City of God DVD sitting around and we decided to watch that... shockingly good film to watch on an off chance.

Such a great film... managing to blend the carefree feel of silverscreen hollywood with the depressing ultraviolence of a drug hell slum world.

Saw Carandiru last night, it was fairly good. It's a pretty slow moving jail-house drama with loads of zany characters. The movie is at it's most intense during the last 15-20 minutes.

And i challenge anyone to name a better crime drama released in the last 2-3 years than
City of God....

Cidade de Deus was impressive to say the least, IMO. The scene
where the little crimo kids are messed around with, tortured, and then (one) shot was
pretty intense.

It looks like I'm going against the crowd, but I didn't think the movie was all that special. The camerawork was amazing, but there was little character development besides Lil' Dice/Ze's characters. The main protagonist (name escapes me) seemed to be less of a character and more of a narrator. The stories, while interesting, didn't seem to fit in the main plot very well. Also, the soundtrack was very unremarkable... perhaps it's because of Katamari Damacy that I want amazing soundtracks. Not bad, but not spectacular; better gang movies exist.

7.5/10

I thought it was really interesting personally. I thought the action was pretty intense, and the stories were based on the narrator's life and news stories. How can't you like a Brazilian gang war?
