Xbox was the No.1 platform for both games because of that Game Pass inclusion. 45% of Expedition 33 players were on Xbox, while 47% of Oblivion players were on Microsoft's platform.

Things differ after that. The second-best platform for Expedition 33 was PlayStation, with 30% of players on that console. The game is a Japanese-style RPG akin to games like Final Fantasy, which typically do well on Sony formats. 25% of Expedition 33 players were on Steam, Ampere states.

Meanwhile, Steam was the No.2 platform for Oblivion (accounting for 34% of players), while 19% of players were on PlayStation. Oblivion is a PC-style RPG, and the original game was a hit initially on Xbox 360 and PC.

Both Oblivion and Expedition 33 were not available in a subscription service on Steam or PlayStation.

Game Pass may have resulted in a stronger player count, but the downside comes in the form of hours played.

According to Ampere, and tracking players worldwide, the average playtime for Expedition 33 on Xbox was 2.2 hours, while it was 4.4 hours on PlayStation and Steam. Meanwhile for Oblivion, average play time was 3.6 hours on Steam, 3.8 hours on PlayStation and 2.2 hours again on Xbox.

TL;DR

45% of players played on Xbox (its on Game Pass)
30% of players played on PS5
25% of players played on Steam

4.4 hours/average on PS5 & Steam
2.2 hours/average on Xbox

well yea, makes sense, you're gonna get a ton of people just downloading cause its there for free and see there's no guns to shoot and turn it off.

Impressive for a dead platform to compete with two industry giants on player count.

But, elephant in the room, I too use Gamepass like a demo service. Quick peek at new releases but no investment means no reason to keep playing unless you get fully hooked, which is rare unfortunately. It is what it is.

That said, I'm surprised at the low playtime numbers. Only 2.2 hours average on Oblivion on Xbox? And not much more on Steam, 3.6 hours?
What's wrong with people?? That's like making a character and going out the starter cave and maybe delivering the amulet. One evening playing or worst case one weekend. On a legendary GOTY awarded 94 Metascore classic remastered like nothing else before it.
What are people playing???

By 45% on "Xbox" don't they mean Game Pass, so PC and Xbox?

This was the whole objective behind this. Muddy the waters to make Xbox seem stronger than it is by lumping in PC players with them and simply use the term "Xbox".
