Surprised to see a Kickstarter for this...
Here in France, it has just been re-published a couple years ago (granted, France is a HUGE market of manga/anime, and Orange Road was quite popular in the late 80s/early 90s).
I have the original release, barring the 13th volume (IIRC) that, for some reason, has been impossible to find anywheree.
I'm really happy that I managed to get a picture signed by Matsumoto Izumi three years ago at the huge Paris "japan-con". I was a bit disappointed that, barring a small exhibition, I wasn't able to buy some KOR art there, though (still want to find a decent Cell from that show).
Such a great OST, too...
Yeah, KOR was big through Spain, France and Italy. I don't know about Portugal or Germany, but the whole Johnny y Sus Amigos (in spanish) era was pretty big. Hell the KOR issues in Spanish that I have, while accurately translated, still have the Johnny y sus Amigos subtitle on the cover. I think Spain just got a new release of the DVDs a few years back.
Here though, we only had the OAVs for years. I don't think there was a complete release of the TV series until 1998. It was never popular in the mainsttream, though it was a major early touchstone for hardcore anime fans in the 1980s - 1990s.
The way you see her can change a lot when reading the last part of the manga.
Should you watch some of the OAV, especially those happening a couple years later, it depicts a far more complex Hikaru than the one seen in most of the original story, and make her probably far more interesting/enjoyable.
I also happen to know someone that is completely Hikaru-type, and that helps to see things a bit differently, too.
Still, Madoka is a great character. I still want to learn saxophone now because of her.
I love Hikaru. The reason the triangle actually works is because she is such a likable character (moreso in the Manga than the anime.) and she grows a LOT over the four years of the manga. She's a sweetheart, and a great early example of a Genki girl who has more to her than the stereotype. KOR was great at doing that, these character tropes would become stereotypes later, but when it was actually coming out, the characters could be defined as more than one major trope.
But I stand by the fact that Hikaru vs Madoka is just unfair to the former.
