Cloud gaming market on pace to generate $2.4bn in 2022

Interesting...

That cloud RE Village on Switch must be selling like honey during Yogi Bear's Christmas. /s

I've played stuff on xcloud and it's fine but these are depressing news if it means it's the future. Maybe the tech will become so good that we won't be able to tell how low-res and laggy the games are.

Anyway, looks bleak to me right now.

That is not a very detailed report. I mean if they are counting every Xbox game pass and playstation+ Ultimate or whatever it is called I can see it, but also what is their qualification for cloud gaming? It doesn't even say in the article. Cell phone games use the cloud, so is that what they are including or what? Article isn't detailed enough to warrant any sort of good estimation/prediction.

Cloud gaming is a very vague term. I don't think they're actually referring to Game streaming when they talk about cloud gaming.

How much of this was Stadia or does that count. Obviously, a new battlefield worth controlling and getting a leg up on the competition.

Even if they do fix these technical issues, the ownership/preservation issues remain. And these are the most important ones.

Cloud gaming is an amazing technology and seems to improve month to month, this is no big surprise, only forums like GAF and Era get upset over the future and potential of the platform whilst platform owners and customers are loving it.

I was playing Dying Light 2 completely maxed out 50fps without any driver installs or having to boot up a noisy power guzzling tower PC all on my MacBook Air M1 , then later on booted the same game up on my Nvidia Shield in 4k HDR all using my favourite controller the Dualsense….

This is all happening right now with great quality and if your worried about ownership, it's all through steam so when my steam deck arrives I can play my games on that or stream via the cloud.

The tech needs a little adjusting (I was getting some tearing on the MacBook) but it's mostly there and only getting better. It's no surprise whats so ever that it's picking up and those 4090 costs are only going to push people closer to cloud based solutions.

P.S it runs great off of 5G

Nearly 100 percent growth year and year.

We are about to become extinct aren't we :(

Will be years of complaining and taking the piss like VRR until every company people have a care for are doing it....then it will be accepted and praised I bet.

I think that most consumers especially younger ones dont seemingly to care about ownership and preservation. They may age into having those priorities.

What in the name of the Holy Ghost does VRR has to do with streaming videogames? 🤯Time to log off before I fast lose braincells.

I was just trying to say that tech that people actually use seem to enjoy it and think its great and there's a whole group of none users screaming that it's pointless and to shut up about it. Then they get to try it and it wraps up in their daily usage and they finally come around to how good it can be. Hope that makes sense.

True. I didn't care that much either when i was younger. I would sell my old games/consoles to buy new ones. But after i discovered emulation and PC gaming in my late teens, that completely changed.

Looking forward to all the "I was wrong about cloud gaming" threads in the future.

Personally i'm of a "why not both" opinion. I enjoy playing natively on console and PC and that is my preferred method but do use Xcloud from time to time for various reasons. The technology has improved (and carries on improving) and I am finding that my usage is increasing slowly and especially now that I can use it on my work laptop and on the Xbox console.

It's a bit pointless when there's no clear definition of what counts as Cloud Gaming revenue.

However I don't find the number that ridiculous, it's the revenue of 10M users paying full price for GeForce Now. If it somehow includes some portion of GPU (based on usage) then it's reasonable.

Oh, now I get it. so the extra R was a typo. 😉

My total spend this year on "cloud" gaming -$0

Times are changing for sure and if the technology demonstrates an equivalent experience then I'm more than happy to eat crow. That time is not now though. Most of these users are in Asia/Pacific where spending £500 on a piece of hardware is simply not within reach for many users. I am happy more people get to experience games.

They're talking about rolling blackouts in the UK for up to 3 hours at a time this winter which hopefully will not happen. However, it raises the point of the matter, it doesn't matter if you are playing locally or in the cloud if you ain't got any power 😂. Crazy times we are in. I am not anti-cloud in any way, I have just yet to see the evidence to make me get on board.

most mediums already switched to non ownership distribution modells. Concerts/spotify, cinema/netflix. There are some who enjoy buying there CD or Vinyl and BR 4k movie, but owning or renting art/entertainment won't go back to old levels. Gaming is just last in that development since it was the only medium where it was the only way of having it, coin machines where the equivalent of concerts and cinema and thank god we don't have them anymore. Since gaming is still rather particular in its requirements streaming is not as easy but once they figure out a price structure and how to sell it for the masses, not for the enthusiast who wants the best experience, it should be good enough for many. The tech is already good enough in most countries, at least in the denser areas.
