The FBI rejected a recent White House request to publicly knock down media reports about communications between Donald Trump's associates and Russians known to US intelligence during the 2016 presidential campaign, multiple US officials briefed on the matter tell CNN.

White House officials had sought the help of the bureau and other agencies investigating the Russia matter to say that the reports were wrong and that there had been no contacts, the officials said. The reports of the contacts were first published by The New York Times and CNN on February 14.

The direct communications between the White House and the FBI were unusual because of decade-old restrictions on such contacts. Such a request from the White House is a violation of procedures that limit communications with the FBI on pending investigations.

The discussions between the White House and the bureau began with FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe and White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus on the sidelines of a separate White House meeting the day after the stories were published, according to a U.S. law enforcement official. A White House official disputes that account, saying that McCabe called Priebus early that morning and said The New York Times story vastly overstates what the FBI knows about the contacts. The White House official said that Priebus later reached out again to McCabe and to FBI Director James Comey asking for the FBI to at least talk to reporters on background to dispute the stories. A law enforcement official says McCabe didn't discuss aspects of the case but wouldn't say exactly what McCabe told Priebus.

Comey rejected the request for the FBI to comment on the stories, according to sources, because the alleged communications between Trump associates and Russians known to US intelligence are the subject of an ongoing investigation.

-------------------

Based on previous Reuters reporting, the FBI is pursuing at least three separate probes into Russia's role in the election:
The FBI's Pittsburgh field office, which runs many cyber security investigations, is trying to identify the people behind breaches of the Democratic National Committee's computer systems, the officials said. Those breaches, in 2015 and the first half of 2016, exposed the internal communications of party officials as the Democratic nominating convention got underway and helped undermine support for Hillary Clinton.

The Pittsburgh case has progressed furthest, but Justice Department officials in Washington believe there is not enough clear evidence yet for an indictment, two of the sources said.

Meanwhile the bureau's San Francisco office is trying to identify the people who called themselves ”Guccifer 2" and posted emails stolen from Clinton campaign manager John Podesta's account, the sources said. Those emails contained details about fundraising by the Clinton Foundation and other topics.

Beyond the two FBI field offices, FBI counterintelligence agents based in Washington are pursuing leads from informants and foreign communications intercepts, two of the people said.

This counterintelligence inquiry includes but is not limited to examination of financial transactions by Russian individuals and companies who are believed to have links to Trump associates. The transactions under scrutiny involve investments by Russians in overseas entities that appear to have been undertaken through middlemen and front companies, two people briefed on the probe said.

There is something big. They had a closed meeting with him and congress and wouldn't even acknowledge there was such a meeting, and now this. Pee pee tape real?

Hope this speaks doom for Trump.

After fucking the planet with his final "we found 3 more emails" nail in the coffin for the Hillary Campaign, and allowing that orange fucktwit to damn us into oblivion for decades to come, I couldn't care less what Comey or the FBI does. I hope the other intelligence agencies both domestic and abroad crack this case wide open.

There definitely is something and every intelligence service in the world is trying to get it and influence Trump with it.

The tape rumor grabs the headlines but it's far from the worst thing in that report.

The White House asked the FBI to be party to a conspiracy to cover up something that they both knew happened. This is insane.

Could they act any more guilty?

If this was a movie or TV show with an evil group or organization trying to cover up their wrongdoings, they would be mocked by critics and viewers for being too transparently villainous. People would say it's unrealistic for the bad guys to be so obvious and unsubtle.

Peoples feelings about the FBI and Comey are usually based on whether or not what he has done hurts or helps their candidate politically. Truthfully hes probably a good guy trying to do his job in a batshit crazy poltical climate

His actions during the Election were the exact opposite of not commenting on an on going investigation. He in fact volunteered information about an on going investigation to congress.

McCabe called Priebus early that morning and said The New York Times story vastly overstates what the FBI knows about the contacts.

Uh-huh. Are they doing damage control to prevent terrible relations with the WH? Or did the media really overstate things for clicks?

What is Comey's angle, really?

Comey probably wanted to only undermine Democrats' chances at getting majority in the Senate, maybe because he thought (like most of us) that Hillary was going to win. Now he has to face the monster he didn't intend to happen in the first place. At this point it's probably fair to say that he wouldn't mind Trump getting impeached, since it would mean a more traditional Repub president.

trapped on the top floor?

He's probably under more scrutiny than Donald. He's the head of the top investigation agency of the country and his loyalties to his position are already under question. So he may be getting all sorts of Trump requests, but he can only do so much without looking like an obvious patsy.

That two-faced Comey, always flip-flopping from being a crooked Hillary flunky to a corrupt Trump lackey.

If I didn't know any better, I'd start to think he's actually a solid and unbiased professional.

This is why I don't want Comey fired despite being a complete fucking idiot. Put a yes man in charge of the FBI and things would be much worse.

The Clinton investigation was unusally politicized. As dumb and his actions were, I still think his motives were less about getting Trump elected and more about trying to cover his ass from the political pressure from Congressional Republicans. He failed at covering his ass, but that doesn't mean that his actions weren't an attempt at trying to prevent that from happening.

Remember when we laughed at Republicans accusing Comey of trying to help Hillary win the election when he went out of his way to explain why she shouldnt face any charges, and then when the tables were turned suddenly it was very obvious the FBI had a conservative political slant and was trying to help Trump win the election when he advised congress that his testimony may end up inconsistent due to new information?

Yeah im pretty sure hes a good guy who has explained several times that they try and be fair and apoltiical, but is human and everyone hates him all the time no matter what he does because everything will always have some political consequences...

So you truly believe he is conspiring politically? Obviously its highly unusual to comment in an ongoing investigation but considering the important context that the investigation had previously been concluded and that he had testified to congress, is it not at all, even a little bit, possible that what he was doing was exactly what he said, which was keeping congress advised on the potential of a change to his testimony under oath? Not to mention the potential outcome if the investigation turned up anything different than it had...I mean he is the reason we all were able to know for sure she was even innocent the first time. We were defending the FBIs apolitical stance and Comeys integrity when it came to that. Either he stays quiet and then gets backlash for holding onto info during a presidential election (imagine if they had found something), or he advises them and gets backlash for having an effect on the election. If you ask me, chaffetz and the other congressmen who made comeys letter public are more to blame than he is. He didnt write a letter to the media, it was to them. He mighta just fucked up a difficult decision

Trump played himself. He could have fired Comey. And now Comey might be the one to let it all out and end his presidency.

Are you kidding me?

His agenda was clear before the election. Having gone on record saying he doesn't like to comment on ongoing investigations, but then the moment some unseen emails that could possibly lead to something (re: nothing) surfaced, he couldn't wait to tell-all just two weeks before votes were cast.

Yeah good guy that Comey is.
