Unlike PS2 (and X360 even), the disc drive, the Blu-Ray disc format (and royalties) and the CPU are going to be used in many more products than just the PS3, so the per-console burden to recoup losses is alot less. MS has only the X360 to recoup investment losses of the custom CPU and GPU. Combined with conservative estimates of 100 million PS3s sold by the end of the generation and Sony should realistically have plenty of wiggle room on the price.White Man said:I'm thinking 500. I think they've cut enough jobs to make room for hardware losses.![]()
Indeed. 500 is my guess...Thai said:this is like the Price is Right

They can't afford to have their shareholders see SCE operate in the Red, period. SCE has been the only thing making Sony's annual reports look reasonable. The cell won't have mass market appeal outside of the PS3 in 2006, and sales trends of the PS2 and PSP recently don't look to be enough to offset the potential losses. The PS3 must be expensive, or shareholders will shit their collective pants.
I'm not sure why this matters, Sony is Sony. Shareholders own stock in Sony Corp, not SCEI. Sony Corp. as a whole has made an investment in Blu-Ray and Cell and not just SCEI will be using them. Blu-Ray will be used by SCEI, the PC division and the Movies division. Cell will be used in PS3, PCs, TVs, etc.snatches said:Please provide some of what you have been smoking. Toshiba, or Samsung or some major TV manufacturer outside of Sony (forget who exactly) announced at CES that all their TVs produced starting in 2006 will have a form of Cell inside.snatches said:The cell won't have mass market appeal outside of the PS3 in 2006,

My guess is $399-$499... it'll be cheaper than what everyone expects, Sony always surprises with their price points.

I LOVE how people just scream that 400 will be the price since the 360 (non tard) was 400.
There is no evidence to support that.
The only evidence we have says that it's going to be fucking expensive.
And Sony's got manufacturing problems ahead (yes, they will have problems making the thing).
Sony can either have a fucking fumble of a launch with buggy hardware that dies quickly, limited numbers, and BUNDLES BUNDLES BUNDLES, for under 500, or they can have a good launch, with supply, and reliable hardware for 500 - 600.
Of course, we all know Sony always provides quality, reliable hardware at launch in ample quantity. :lol
There is no way in hell I'll buy a PS3 at launch, regardless of price. I KNOW that shit is going to have bugs. Same reason I didn't buy a 360. Nintendo, on the other hand, puts out reliable shit at launch.
Though my first GameCube, a launch day one, was buggered and would freeze when playing SSB:M, exchanged it for a different oen and all was well. Sony and MS on the otherhand basically say "FUCK YOU" when their hardware fails, and they expect you to buy a new one. The stores will basically say "FUCK YOU" as well if shit is in short supply.
So, what evidence is there for a $400 PS3?
Mrbob said:People still overestimating the cost of Playstation 3. Blu Ray Drive prices will fall nicely too as production builds up. Playstation 3 video is handled entirely in software via Cell and RSX.
Cell is already going to be in all 2006 Toshiba TVs.
I'm going to go one further with my next prediction. I will predict the priceline of the entire Playstation family by Fall 2006 when PS3 launches.
PS2 - $99
PSP- $199
PS3 - $299

psycho_snake said:No they wouldnt. $100 dollars is a lot of money for most people and that could be the difference for them buying it or not.
Oblivion said:Seeing how people talk about Sony's current financial state, anything under $400 would take them forever to turn into profit.
