Code Name: S.T.E.A.M | Review Thread

This is actually lower than I expected based on the demo and from what I heard from people with the full game.

Doesn't especially matter to me since I was passing on it, anyway, but still. Didn't expect to see it get savaged.

Yeah, same here. It didn't grab my interest but I'm taken aback by some of these reviews. Yikes.

Not sure a real consensus can be reached, because it's a love/hate game. You either really, really like it... or you think it's terrible. Not a lot of middle ground.

this should be fun, NOA has been pushing this one hard too
Really? I've barely seen any advertising for it. I didn't even know it was coming out on Friday until I saw a thread yesterday.

This really does seem like a love it or hate it game. Judging by the reviews, it's not nearly as story-heavy as the Fire Emblem games, so its entire value is based on how much you enjoy the gameplay systems.

eek.

I'm still gonna give it a shot. I recall Wonderful 101 getting similar treatment and that's one of the best games of the gen.

Not being able to skip the enemy's turn is definitely going to hinder this game's reviews...

It seems like this element makes the game unnecessarily slow.

Dan Ryckert on the Bombcast was saying that it wasn't unusual that the enemy turn phase would last a minute or more, giving you stretches where you could put the system down to go get a drink, and when you've come back, you're still waiting on the enemy turn.

I typically prefer the FFT style where turns are determined by individual character speed as opposed to PHASE style where the entire enemy team moves. Is Codename Steam a Phase Based Strategy game or is it FFT style?
A mix of phase-based movement but with chances for your team members to use Overwatch (counter-fire available for certain weapon/Steam combinations) in order to stall enemies.

I hope it sells decent. Might be an eShop hit, IDK.

I played the demo and enjoyed it a lot so I will bite but I can see why a lot of people could be turn off by the game so is no surprising the range of scores and opinions.

---

They should have stuck with Advance Wars and Fire Emblem, two solid series.
What!? NO! Nobody deserves to be stuck making the same games over and over if they don't want.

I can understand different scores. I personally didn't enjoyed the demo that much but I knew it would be hard to convince me since I don't like turn by turn games and the steampunk setting doesn't do anything to me

It's a new franchise though so I hope the game can be enjoyed by people who were waiting for it. I'm always asking for novelty, but you can't please everyone (starting with me for Code Name:S.T.E.A.M) so it shouldn't keep devs and editors from trying ^^

Dan doesn't get Monster Hunter though..

Come on man.

This game never appealed to me. Seriously, who the heck thought it was a good idea to have such a design ?

To think that we could have had something different instead of THIS...

I really enjoy playing the demo over and over when I can, so the game's ending up in my library at some point. But it's not the same game as FE or AW, and hopefully people will understand what it's aiming for on its own merits.

We have plenty other games like those, I really don't mind that S.T.E.A.M. is doing something different...in fact this is the sort of exploratory IP we should encourage.

I haven't agreed with a lot of Gamespot's reviews so this doesn't deter me much at all. I feel like Gamexplains tastes are much more in line with my own. I'm still only planning on renting it though.

It's a new Nintendo IP made by Intelligent Systems. What did you want instead, another Fire Emblem or Advance Wars?

I enjoyed the demo, dig the artstyle and love the overall aesthetic but not sure if I'll be picking it up Day 1 since a whole slew of games are currently competing for my playtime.

Still, this game will be divisive but everyone should at least give the demo a chance to see if it's for them.

The long enemy turns were definitely annoying in the demo though, I'll agree to that.

I love it.

It's far more complex and requires more critical thinking than your average strategy game.

The only thing I don't like are the long enemy wait times , but eh I'll live with it . The demo was really fun. Not surprise seeing a love it or hate it range of scores .

Interesting range in scores. I can't say that I was expecting that. I'll definitely be reading through all the reviews to get a good idea of what to expect from the full game. It's a bit tough to take such a steep cash plunge when there seems to be so much uncertainty.

It's a shame, really. I had high hopes for this one, being from Intelligent Designs and all.

Ideally, yes.

I have this on preorder and played the demo. I'll have to think long and hard about whether I'll be keeping this, especially considering Xenoblade 3D is coming soon along with many other games on my backlog

An Advance Wars game for exemple would've been welcomed indeed. But I just wished for something... but not like this.
And I love Intelligent Systems.

Really long enemy turns where you can't see what's going on sounds like a dealbreaker.

Yeah. Even the phase style turns on Valkyria Chronicles would get to me

Part of the reason I never finished it is cuz when you first start missions you are typically going in blind and have minimal ability to react to the shifting battlefield since each force mobilizes entirely in one turn.

FFT should be the damn gold standard

I haven't been following this game closely. Is this like an XCOM with wacky characters? Might this be a case of reviewers not "getting" the game, or are the criticisms valid?

Guess I should've seen this coming, but yikes.

Will still give it a shot later this year; glad to see Nintendo exploring new IP.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
I was annoyed with the enemy turn stuff just from the little bit I played in the demo

that said, the "it's too hard" criticisms make me more interested in the game, not less

I'll probably pick it up down the line

Huh... nothing about the combat is unpredictable based on the demo. I guess the reviewer didn't understand it?

reading some of the other reviews it seems like some of the stages are brutal as fuck due to the game's inherent 'fog of war'. Lots of trial and error going on.

And I bet the long loading times are even worse in perspective if you have to redo a mission

EvilMario

Will QA for food.
Do any of the reviews touch on difficulty compared to other Intelligent Systems games? I mean, is it really more difficult than older Fire Emblem games, or Advance Wars for instance? I imagine it would be something more around Awakening's level, where you need some careful planning and strategy, but you're never really going to be stuck for too long.
