All this year I've been showering with cold water... and I love it.

I feel like a new person every morning, I don't get tired during the day, my mood is better, my skin feels better, my hair, everything is better with cold showers.

So GAF, what do you thing about a nice cold shower in the morning?

I usually take really hot showers then turn them cold at the end. Otherwise I'd never get out. It's also really refreshing that way.

My wiener is small enough without cold water. I need steaming hot to give myself at least some confidence to start the day.

I take warm showers but then to compensate and achieve all of the OP's advantages, I walk around naked all day.

Benefits of Cold Water Showers

While doctors may no longer instruct their patients to take a cold bath and call them in the morning, a shot of cold water can still impart real health benefits:

Improves circulation.

Good blood circulation is vital for overall cardiovascular health. Healthy blood circulation also speeds up recovery time from strenuous exercises and work. Alternating between hot and cold water while you shower is an easy way to improve your circulation. Cold water causes your blood to move to your organs to keep them warm. Warm water reverses the effect by causing the blood to move towards the surface of the skin. Cold shower proponents argue that stimulating the circulatory system in this way keeps them healthier and younger looking than their hot water-loving counterparts.

Relieves depression.

Lots of great men from history suffered bouts of depression. Henry David Thoreau is one such man. But perhaps Thoreau’s baths in chilly Walden Pond helped keep his black dog at bay. Research at the Department of Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine indicates that short cold showers may stimulate the brain’s “blue spot”- the brain’s primary source of noradrenaline — a chemical that could help mitigate depression. I guess a bout of the blues isn’t so bad after all.

Keeps skin and hair healthy.

Hot water dries out skin and hair. If you want to avoid an irritating itch and ashy elbows, turn down the temperature of your showers. Also, cold water can make your manly mane look shinier and your skin look healthier by closing up your cuticles and pores.

Strengthens immunity.

According to a study done in 1993 by the Thrombosis Research Institute in England, individuals who took daily cold showers saw an increase in the number of virus fighting white blood cells compared to individuals who took hot showers. Researchers believe that the increased metabolic rate, which results from the body’s attempt to warm itself up, activates the immune system and releases more white blood cells in response.

Increases testosterone.

During the 19th century, many doctors and ministers recommended that young men take baths in cold water to reduce the sin of “self-pollution,” i.e. whacking off. Cold water was thought to extinguish a man’s flaming carnal desires. There was even a ghastly device invented on this principle.

How wrong they were! The same study by the Thrombosis Research Institute cited above showed that cold water showers actually increase testosterone production in men. Increased testosterone levels not only boost a man’s libido, but also his overall strength and energy level. If you’re looking to increase your testosterone, instead of juicing up like Mark McGwire, hop into a cold shower.

Increases fertility.

Trying to become a dad? Cold showers are good for your little swimmers. Your testes aren’t meant to get too hot; that’s why they hang outside your body. Sperm counts decrease when the temperature of a man’s testes increases. Experiments done in the 1950s showed that hot baths were an effective contraceptive. Men who took a 30 minute hot bath every other day for 3 weeks were infertile for the next six months. More recently, the University of California at San Francisco did a study with men who were exposed to 30 minutes of “wet heat” (hot baths and such) a week. When the men cut this exposure out, their sperm count went up by 491%, and their sperm’s motility improved as well. While switching from a hot to cold shower may not have as dramatic an effect, if you’re trying to create some progeny, it surely won’t hurt.

Increases energy and well-being.

Every time I end a shower with cold water, I leave feeling invigorated and energized. Your heart starts pumping, and the rush of blood through your body helps shake off the lethargy of the previous night’s sleep. For me, the spike in energy lasts several hours. It’s almost like drinking a can of Diet Mountain Dew, minus the aspartame. And while it hasn’t been studied, many people swear that cold showers are a surefire stress reducer. I’m a believer.

I like lukewarm showers. Basically I adjust the temperature so it feels like hundreds of fat women spitting on me.

Think I'm going to go take a shower right now followed by some coldness for a minute or so. How cold are we talking about here? Ice cold?

Contrast Showers for me.

~1 minute hot / ~30 seconds cold.

Getting hotter and colder each time. End with cold, feel awesome.

Cold baths are great post-work out.
This. I buy a bag of ice at the market, add whatever ice I have in the freezer and dump it in my tub. Feels fucking amazing. I just had one last night. Baths are a waste of water though so I try to keep it to when I'm particularly sore.

I do this too but the way my water is set up in the shower, it's hard to get it really cold. I think maybe cuz I'm in a building and it's like 85 degrees in here; water in the pipes isn't really that cold.

I want to embrace the cold shower thing but I just hate it. Only this morning I woke up feeling frozen and lifeless. Blast the hot water and I'm strutting about whistling a merry tune just ten minutes later.

Go to the gym and turn all the showers on in hot-cold-hot-cold order and I run back and forth.

Cold showers in summer after a run are awesome I must say. Otherwise not gonna happen.

People say the same thing about not using soap.

Hey, why don't we just not take showers, that's got to be the best thing for you! Luddites.

Or maybe cold showers AND not using soap is the next big thing!

let's get back to the basics people!

I don't understand some studies. It changes all the time.

What about a hot sauna bath? I that not healthy anymore??

During the summer, yes.

During the winter, hell no.

Yep. Wifey won't even shower with me in the summer. If I'm hot and sweaty the last thing I want is a hot ass shower.

Winter, nah. I can't afford to keep my house hot enough to make that possible. lol

that's what I do, too. maybe not really hot, but I put it on full cold for the last minute, the jolt from hot to cold wakes my ass right up.

the last minute of cold also gets rid of morning eye puffiness/bags ("sleepy eyes") for me.

I'll give this a shot. Does it have to be frigid (like all the way down), or can it just be a step below the middle?

As cold as you can stand, after 2 or 3 days lower the temperature even more and keep going.

That is so awesome. I did that a few times when I was young at the showers at the beach. Great feeling.

Also, the most important reason to take cold showers, or at least cool showers, is for testicle function. If someone uses a sauna everyday or sauna-temperature showers, they will barely produce testosterone and one or both testicles will not function enough. After a few years of this, you will be infertile, can get intense pain in the area (varicocele- believe me, I know), and you will probably need a testicle removed and a plastic ball in its place.

Just keep notching it lower to see how cold you can go. No need to make it uncomfortable.

I really can't handle a cold shower. Hot like fire is how I prefer to take my showers.
This thread makes me want to give it a shot though.

I actually just started doing this recently. It really does make me feel like a different person in the morning. That little adrenaline rush you get from the shock of just jumping into the cold water does alot. You don't have to wait for the water to heat up. Plus I realized that I tend to take shorter showers since it is so cold. Probably cut total shower time down to 5 min.

I clean myself with warm water but I turn it cold for a couple of minutes at the end. It does make you feel great.
