Cold Winter (PS2 FPS): Any reviews?

I've been feeling "FPS happy" as of late and noticed a game called "Cold Winter" from Sierra is shipping out today; it's PS2 exclusive and the only mention I've seen of it is that Gamepro gave it a good score and called it one of the better PS2 FPS games, which really isn't saying much.

The game sounds like a Goldeneye rip-off from the description.

For the journalist types that have played it, how is the game? Good? Decent? Crap? Somehow I suspect the latter, but you never know.

If you persist through the first five levels, it turns out to be an average shooter, not just crap.

It has a lot of potentially good ideas, which never got developed far enough :(

From an over-the-top, action film perspective it actually has a few enjoyable moments.

even OPM couldn't get off their habit but I notice the other PS2 specific mags are giving it mediocre scores which isn't heartning. Online sounds pretty bad too :(

I thought it looked really cool in some film, so I'm hoping it turns out ok. It kind of looks physics crazy for a linear shooter on PS2, so maybe it's fun.

They gave Killzone 10/10 so I don't think they can be trusted

their totally untrustworthy for reviews.

I played through the demo a few times, but it did very little to impress me.

The game has been in development for a long time and Edge did a few indepth previews.

They are using Renderware.

The developer is going for the Goldeneye feel.

According to OPM UK the multiplayer is actually quite weak.

I thought both Killzone and Project Snowblind were better.

7.5 at IGN. Fairly positive review though. Plays up the enemy AI, physics, violence, etc. Plays down the graphics, framerate, sound quality (but excellent voice and music).

Is it just me or has Ivan gotten really....different in his writing style lately. I think he's high.

Yeah, it really sounded WEIRD on the first page. Just seems like he hated the lack of color in the stages and the audio compression more than anything else. Nothing about the multiplayer.

In other words, I guess I need to wait and see what Gamespot thinks. :D

I downloaded some videos; it really does remind me of Goldeneye. Much more so than that terrible Rogue Agent game.

It's intriguing. The physics sound kind of fun. If overtly violent, in a Soldier of Fortune sort of way. I like the vids...it actually seems like a well done B grade spy movie. I was kind of counting on you to already have played it, Lyte :lol

I just rented this. So far....this is easily the best FPS I've played on PS2.

The physics are fun. You can pick up things, throw them, flip tables over for cover, etc. Nice. Really bloody, but not really...grotesque I guess. It's hard to explain. The guards so far are dumb, but not super dumb. They take cover, etc. I suggest playing at a high level as power ups and health are fairly easy to come by. Fun weapons, nice animations and feedback. The framerate is ok, it's nowhere near Killzone levels.

The graphics are functional, but seem fine to me. I guess...you know we've entered that late Xbox phase/near next gen where graphics, especially in shooters and such are approaching decent PC levels and better so this definitely looks like it was designed a few years ago. But...it doesn't take away from the game. It's more archaic in design than effects. Again, the right description isn't there for me yet. Hopefully, nothing in that respect gets worse.

Big thumbs up to the voice acting and music. It's amazing how good work in those areas in an action game can improve the feeling of playing it. You begin to take the mediocre for granted.

I hope it's decent online.

Just in case anyone but me cares....

I take back what I said about the gore. It's soldier of fortune like in that respect. Also, there are some nasty moments of slowdown.

Still....it does so much right that despite it feeling a few years old I stand by it being the best PS2 fps so far. Great weapons. Great explosions, grenade baking, crouching, jumping, etc. Fun little side things, etc.

I think it's just that the characters and story are actually likeable for a game like this. It's rough, but a lot of fun.

its not bad at all and has a good story. gameplay seems a bit repitive and 08/15. there are some framerate issues too. and its a bit to easy. but in the end, i liked this game much more than ea`s james bond games.

the review of this game were unfair

this his a very good game and and solid fps,it had some excellent moments,( and one of the best historytelling on a fps) its a pity this game was forgotten cause its a ausence of license or hype

Ugh, now I remember why I don't like PS2 FPS's - I can't aim for shit with the DS2.

I'll have to check the options for some sensitivity adjustments.

Otherwise, the game actually looks decent with some interesting twists like tossing over tables to use for cover and suchlike.

The entire game has this "Goldeneye" feel towards it. You get a medi-pack that has unlimited use but doesn't replenish like in Halo or Killzone(you have to press left on the dpad to pull it out of your backpack and take a shot). So far I like I like the game but I have yet to take play it online. One thing is for sure the AI here is better than the one in Killzone :P

Doesn't have those. The developers "doesn't want to give anyone tools to ruin their experience" or something like that.

I'm just shocked that the story is written by Warren Ellis but it sucks.

Cold Winter's not a bad game, but I don't get all the Goldeneye comparisons that keep getting made. The game doesn't play like GE at all, it more closely resembles Soldier of Fortune (and not just because of the comedy limb removals).
I also thought the voice acting was pretty bad (except for Tom Baker) - the swearing seemed a bit forced.
Final level is a bit dull - bit of an anti-climax.

Better than Pariah though. :)

This, and killzone are reasons why the next gen is *not* coming too early.

These games are multiplatform/PS2 exclusive because thats where the money is. But clearly they are being held back by the capabilities of the platform. Killzone shows a lot of promise, as does Coldwinter, but they just seem hampered by technology (and maybe mediocre developers)

Lets hope PS3 removes those restrictions and we get some real imagination back into FPSes. Its out there, it just needs delivering.
