Combat Mission Campaigns

I don't know how many players of Combat Mission II: Barbarossa to Berlin are around here (I suspect not that many), but Battlefront is co-developing an interesting game that functions as an expansion for it, but also works as a standalone game:

Combat Mission Campaigns

If you install both games together, then CMC will handle strategic gameplay, while CMBB handles tactical gameplay.

CMC overview page said:
Combat Mission Campaigns is an operational wargame where you command forces up to a Division in size during the bloody nightmare of WWII's Eastern Front from 1941-45.

By working in tandem with the award winning Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin game engine, Combat Mission Campaigns allow you to command your troops at the operational level and then play out the resulting battles at the tactical level. CMBB and CMC actually share information back and forth so the disposition and status of troops, experience, fatigue, supply, terrain, weather, time of day and more are seamlessly integrated into both games. Plan your strategies, issue orders and deploy your maneuver units in a dynamic 3D isometric map and when units close to engagement ranges, CMC actually creates the battles (unit positions, status, weather, time of day etc...) to then be played in CMBB. Once the tactical battle is finished, CMBB then sends the results back to CMC and play is continued at the Operational level.

Like CMBB wasn't already hardcore enough.

Here's a link to screenshots, which are nothing to speak of, but who plays Combat Mission for graphics?

P.S. If you've never played (or heard of) Combat Mission and you like hardcore strategy games, you really should give it a try--it's unbelievably deep. Check out the Gamerankings reviews: 88%.

I forgot all about Combat Mission.

I played the demo for the first releasel quite a bit. What it lacked in graphics, it made up for in pure fun. I was expecting something like Close Combat, but I grew to like the "we go" style of gameplay. I also remember the sound effects in the game being fantastic. Never bought the full version though. Im probably missing a great bargain bin game.

The sound design is the best I've ever heard in a PC game. No music, but the soundscape allows you to do things like figure out what enemy forces are hiding in woods, even if they're concealed from view.

As for whether it's in the bargain bin or not--I ordered it straight from the company so I could get the printed manual (it's something like 300+ pages). But I think there's a version with a PDF manual available in stores for $19.99.

Yep, I think I'll check this out again. I remember seeing one of the combat missions at comp usa for 9.99. Definitely worth the money.

I wish they had strategy games like this for consoles. Combat mission woould work quite nicely with a console controller. The closest thing I can think of is Battlestations: Midway. Not turned based, but should be a good blend of strategy and action (if they ever release it).
