Comcast blocking P2P access?

Status
Not open for further replies.
Greetings,

Anyone experience Comcast blocking access to a P2P site? I have had them for two years and all of a sudden access was blocked. Spoke with a Comcast rep online who said it was due to them protecting me from malware. I asked the gentleman again if it was due to the site being a P2P site and he said yes. So I filed a complaint with the FCC. Anyone else experience this?

Haven't tried that. The rep did confirm that they blocked all access to the site though due to it being a P2P site. He did say they would remove the block within 24 hours. However, before there was evidence of them just monitoring their customers downloads and they would slow their usage if it appeared they were using a P2P site. I hadn't actually hear of them blocking access.

Which site was it, if you don't mind my asking? And obviously, don't link anything. I'm interested in whether or not it was a big BitTorrent tracker, or something like a large filesharing forum or something like that.

Uh . . . didn't the comcast settle this and agree to stop such blocking?

NZBMatrix. Its a usenet site.

Movies. Believe me, it was weird. For the past 9 months or so I had no problem. Then all of a sudden two days ago it stopped. I was able to access the site from my phone so I knew it wasn't the site itself. I also don't download loads and loads of material so it wouldn't be that.

i can't get to it either. usenet isn't p2p though, so this is interesting.

edit: i don't think comcast is blocking it. i think they are having host problems.

From site:

Downtime
Ok Long story short, hosts had planned an IP change that should have been smooth and taken a week or so. This didnt happen and the old IP address was dropped without warning. We have changed IP of our servers. Unfortunately as we also have our own NameServers and these IPs changed also a DNS update was required. Please allow up to 48hours for this update. As always we have a service status site NZBMatrix.info, you should bookmark this site as its on a different host, and should always be online.

However I am able to get to the site on my cell phone. I can't even access it at all via my PC. So its not the site that is the issue here.

You know what you did? You just told your ISP that you're downloading massive amounts of copyright material, because you're a dumbass and don't understand what a DNS Cache is or how to Flush it.

Congratz.

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Betcha that kills their "block"

Yes, I tried doing the flush before hand and it didn't work which is why I contacted Comcast. Please don't assume that I didn't do this before hand. Also, having access to a site doesn't mean I am downloading anything. It isn't a torrent site. The site doesn't hold any files to be downloaded.

Yeah Yeah Yeah....... You still dry snitched on yourself. You are kidding yourself if you don't think Comcast knows what a newsgroup is primarily used for :lol

Call me what you like but my concern was Comcast doing something they told the FCC that they wouldn't. If something happens to me because of me contacting them then I will have to deal with that. Doesn't discount what they are doing, not alerting their customers to blocking websites that they visit.

Hehe, well I called it with the DNS issue.

Man, I need to try Newsgroups again...last time I tried with GigaNews I was getting corrupt partitions all over the place.

And ISPs really don't give a shit what you download. The only reason they email about torrents is the pressure from the licensing companies. Torrents can be monitored. Newsgroups cannot, so there is no pressure to block them.

Again you seemed to ignore WHEN I SAID I HAD ACCESS ON MY PHONE. When I say I had no access on my PC, I HAD NO ACCESS as in the website wouldn't show up. Before you go and call someone else a tool, you might want to look in the mirror yourself.

*waiting for witty response*

You phone uses different DNS servers you fucking retard. Not all DNS Servers update immediately some update on a schedule. I don't know how you're still trying to blame this on Comcast, when even the site said that their name server (that's the NS of DNS BTW) was switched, and they were waiting on it to be 100%. That witty enough for you? :lol

Hmm, other people are able to access the site and I am not. I tried flushing the DNS before, still didn't work. Funny how the Comcast rep even confirmed IT WAS BLOCKED. So who should I trust, some guy who thinks he is funny and laughs at his own comments or a rep from Comcast on this issue? Yea, exactly.

Well considering you probably copping this same attitude with the Comcast agent on the phone..... I like how the Comcast guys answer coincides with the websites estimated problem resolved time. Then again that's just me applying logic to your "They're out to get me" posts.

Again, it appears that you are not reading. I didn't speak with somebody on the phone, it was online. The agent's response didn't coincide with the website's resolve time. His response was WE BLOCKED YOUR ACCESS FROM THE SITE BECAUSE IT WAS A P2P SITE. Regarding my attitude? You are the one that has been a prick since your first response and have made accusations based upon assumptions that have been incorrect which you would have known if you have cared to read what I wrote rather than just writing to "hear" yourself laugh. But whatever, I am done responding to you since it has turned into a one on one who can outshine the other. BTW, if you feel like you "won" then hopefully it was all worth it. :D

You assume a dumbass CSR knows anything? If he doesn't know the difference between P2P and usenet he must not be the sharpest tool in the shed.

You call this guy up and tell him they blocked you from a website and he's like 'ok whatever, ill put in a ticket and it'll be fixed in 24 hours' so he doesn't have to talk to you anymore and that is somehow irrefutable proof that comcast is blocking you from accessing some NZB aggregator?

Sure.

I think what really happened is you WANTED to be blocked so you could brag about what an uber leet pirate you are and how you know how to use NZBs so you don't have to mingle with the bittorrent proles.

:lol

If thats what you want to think, go for it. I have not bragged one time in this entire topic. I asked a question and the only way to get an answer was to tell what happened. But as I said, if you want to feel "leet" for an accusation, enjoy your gaf "leetness".

Yea which is what is weird. Others have said the same. I have had Comcast for two years and Time Warner for 5 years before that and never had a site blocked which is why I was caught off guard.

pretty sure comcast doesnt do this

as it was found to be illegal recently

i had comcast for years and never once had a problem with them blocking anything

Same here dorkimoe. Thats why I was taken aback. The thing is I cannot imagine any other reason, especially with the rep saying it was due to the content of the site. I tried using both Mozilla and IE and both refused to connect. I already tried flushing dns before contacting them. The site was still up when this was taking place, although it wasn't in full usage. While some say I am simply craving attention by posting this, I simply am trying to get a response from those who are might have a better understanding. It isn't my goal to blame comcast or start a fuss, I just don't have any other reason why at this point.

I have Comcast and they were def throttling my upload speeds before...
But for the past few months ( I think longer than that) everything has been working normally again.

Is it nzbmatrix.com?

Because that site is not loading up for me.

Yup that is it. What error do you get if any?

Page Load Error.

I was able to get on the site with firefox. Im a time warner customer.

Also, don't know if this may be the reason for the problems...

Yea, but that message is posted once a person actually is able to get access to the site which I wasn't able to do. However, just as the Comcast rep stated, my block has been removed and I am able to once again visit the site. So for amishnazi, it was a block and not the site being down.

Isn't it funny at all to you that the Comcast reps solution exactly coincides with the expected resolution to their DNS server downtime?

You are a hard headed I'm right and you're wrong type person. If I was the Comcast rep I would of told you the same thing just to get your stubborn ass off the phone.

Oh well keep thinking that they are all out to get you.

Believe.

Actually again it didn't coincide. It appears either you refuse to read or cannot read the words written above. Some on Comcast were able to HAVE ACCESS TO THE SITE DURING THEIR DOWNTIME. I WAS NOT. Therefore it isn't THE WEBSITE BEING DOWN BUT RATHER THE BAN ON MY IP ADDRESS. Since I have repeated this to you multiple times I will not do so again. Think what you like.
