Diamond's Shipping List for December 29th 2004

I'll be picking up:

ADAM STRANGE #4 (Of 8)
TEEN TITANS #19
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #515
WHAT IF AUNT MAY HAD DIED INSTEAD OF UNCLE BEN
WHAT IF KAREN PAGE HAD LIVED

For those interested, Judd Winick and Doug Mahnke's Batman run begins this week. I'll give it a peek, but I haven't really been impressed by any of Winick's mainstream work, thus far. Dammit, fifth weeks suck.

Cool! What Ifs!

Marvel needs to do more humor again, like this classic:
FredHembeck.jpg

Lyte Edge

All I got for the Vernal Equinox was this stupid tag
Who is Karen Page?

I love What If?, but those are some lame titles. I saw a TPB listing for March with a bunch of the newer What if? stories, and none of them sounded that great to me. How are they Nomo? Worth getting after all?

I used to love that comic as a kid. Even got it autographed by Fred Hembeck himself...he was at our local comics shop to do a signing, which was weird since we lived in a small town and I think I remember maybe four people ever being in that store at the same time. Hembeck was a BIG star in the comics industry. :lol

I'll be checking out Legion as well. It's too highly recommended for me to write off without a cautionary glance, at least.

The new team of Gabrych/Garza on Batgirl rocks. I've never cared about the character too much, but I started reading it because I liked Gabrych on Detective. She actually has a personality and seldom touched character traits, like her being illiterate are being played with in this run. Definitley check it out.

ok, thanks. will check it out then.

I went to my comic store's boxing week sale today
20 percent off TPB's so I got Hush volume 2 (didn't realize it was vol 2 until I got home lol) and X-Men Days of Future Past

Only read the first few chapters of Hush so far, but omg this is awesome

WHAT IF JESSICA JONES HAD JOINED THE AVENGERS -- Don't know how good this will be, but Bendis and Gaydos together again is too good to pass up.

I also wanted to get the WHA HUH? humor issue, but that seems to have slipped into January.

I'll be snagging these next week, after I'm back from vacation:

Tom Strong #30 - I'm buying this title mostly out of intertia at this point. The guest writers are fun, but generally not quite up to Moore's standards. And, when we're talking about a pulp pastiche title, that's not a great sign.

The Walking Dead #14 - God, I love this comic.

Ultimate FF #14 and Ultimate Nightmare #4 (of 5) - Ellis continues to phone 'em in, I continue to buy 'em. I suppose I should check out Ellis' Iron Man run at some point. Anyone read it? Survey says?

Five Star Stories #25 and 26 - Freakin' awesome! Of course, this means I finally have to sit down and read volumes 23 and 24...

Warren Ellis: Quit City - Another of Warren's faux #1s in a fictional comic line from a parallell universe where superhero comics weren't overwhelmingly popular. Frank Ironwine was phenomenal, so I'm quite psyched about this.

I might pick up the Jessica Jones What If? but that's a big maybe.

A page or two from this week's Legion:

Jo seems slightly cocky and assholish, and I still <3<3<3<3 Ayla. Her new design (with the homage to the old Light Lass uni) fucking rocks.

MONOLITH #11

Yeesh! Slow week for me this week. Maybe I'll check some other things out, but the next-to-last issue of Monolith is the only definite.

I did buy the DC Comics Encyclopedia yesterday though, so I guess that's enough for any week. :p

I liked the humor in the second page. :D Waid right? Reminds me of his Gatecrasher stuff. Kinda worried the large cast with a deep history could be hard to get into even though this is a relaunch. I think the trade, when it comes, would make it easier to jump into.

I'll put this in my look at column.

BATGIRL #59 *give me some info on this book darien...*
BATMAN #635 *isnt this the begining of the red hood storyline?*

Well let's see... Robin and Batgirl have both relocated to Bludhaven, Robin to take over for Nightwing, Batgirl to help Robin and to help herself.. she's the better fighter, but he's the better... more well-rounded people person... The currently storyline has them trapped by the Penguin who has ALSO relocated to Bludhaven... he actually had Blockbuster's corpsed stuffed and mounted. To get out, they've set up a match where they are going to fight each other all the criminals HAD been beating on who would get to unmask Robin, but then Robin picked a fight with one of them and it turned in to Robin vs. Batgirl. Not exactly the most original thing but I'm curious to see how it goes... Yes Batman 635 starts the Red Hood storyline.

Yep, it's Waid, and not to dickish about it, but I'd encourage anyone who's interested in it to pick it up tomorrow since DC has been slightly lackluster about doing Legion TPBs. Those first month sales need to be high, baby!

Don't worry about the history, there is none. Waid has said that he's writing the book as it would be done -now- so expect reintroductions of all the characters.

I'm interested in LSH for the first time since I heard about the reboot.

Here's hoping we don't get all retreads of old stories. I mean, I like the old stuff a lot, but I've read it already.

Waid has said that -everything- is new. No Fatal Five (though i'd like it,) basically no old school villains. I'm sure that will change at some point, when the time is right, but there are no plans right now for any of that.

I still say that
Shikari will be a major plot point within a few years, there's no way that she'll be able to hear about the 'new' Legion and not investigate.

I'm also predicting the return of a more Vril Dox-like Braniac 5.

for anyone interested, Barry Kitson posted some of his designs on Legion World: http://www.legionworld.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=002571

well i'm pumped. i have to admit getting into the legion is hard work with all that past history (but luckily for me i knew enough) should be fun.

edit: good to see barry kitson back at DC where he belongs. :D now get him to superman, STAT!!!

No continuity whatsoever? Maybe I'll have to take a look at LSH after all.

Barry Kitson's definitely come a long way in the last few years... his JLA: Year One art was decent, but was also bland, and boring.

One good thing about LSH -- every issue will have 30 pages of story, all for only $2.95.

Just read #2. It was a good read and Ellis is starting to flesh out his take on Tony Stark, along with the book's familiar topic of technology and it's morality. Lack of Iron Man but more action than last issue. Hopefully part 3 will make up for it. Drug references a plenty though.

Picked up LSH and these kids are interesting.

Out of curiosity... is anyone reading Invincible? I've been thinking about jumping on board...

Invincible is good fun, but I'd recommend starting from the beginning rather than part way through.

Yes, I'm quoting myself to answer your question. :) Invincible is a very good, but different, super hero book. You should read it, but start from the beginning. I like it more than Walking Dead, though that title certainly gets more pub for Kirkman.

And again, enjoy the books, hate the writer. :p

The shop was all out of the What If? books, which made me a little sad. I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer to see what would've happened had Jessica joined the Avengers.

I picked up Concrete: The Human Dilemma and Legion, among others. Legion was awesome, and it's definitely a title I'll read on a regular basis. But it's Concrete that I really want to talk about, because it's one of the better books I've ever read. It gives me that same vibe that I got from Blankets, in that it's a very human story...even if the main character is made up of rock. No super hero antics here, no giant battles. It's very dialog-heavy, and even though I've only read one issue, I already feel like I've known these characters like a very long time.

Preview pages and text, from PopCultureShock.

Speechwriter Ron Lithgow's mind was suddenly removed from his body and placed into that of an immense extraterrestrial-one with a rock-like shell for skin. Now, seventeen years after his comics debut with then-fledgling publisher Dark Horse, Lithgow enters into another contemplative conundrum. As the accidental celebrity Concrete, he is now courted by a high-profile CEO to lend his name to a controversial population control program. While Concrete mulls this generous proposition over with his companion Maureen, his longtime aide Larry Munro mulls over an entirely different sort of proposal.

• Winner of six Eisner and three Harvey awards for Concrete, acclaimed creator Paul Chadwick returns with his first Concrete miniseries in six years!

?

Also, I hate to say it, but the Jessica Jones What If issue sucks -- way too much space spent recapping stuff in Alias (with a fair amount of dialogue taken verbatim from the Purple arc), too little of Jessica actually being in the Avengers.
Bendis himself (though he's not named) is the narrator, for some reason. Also, Jessica Jones prevents the events of Disassembled from happening by stumbling into the Scarlet Witch's room, hearing voices, and telling Captain America that "something is wrong with Wanda." Wow.
Gaydos' art is still great, though.
