COMICS!!! |OT| April 2017 - Now Featuring Superstar Artist Brett Booth - APRIL FOALS!

I've read up to the start of Earth War. It's one of those situations where I'm trying to draw out the experience I think. Will probably finish it at some point this year.

And yeah I saw your 8house thoughts earlier. It's what got me thinking about the wasted opportunity initially. I guess I just wanted more of it and maybe some longer running storylines (which we probably get with Mirror I suppose). I was excited by the possibilities of them cutting loose in their own created universe (not that they seemed to be inhibited with Prophet). I think I built it up in my mind too much (going back to the initial announcement at Image Expo 2014 I think?) and then was disillusioned with all the delays.

I don't think you built it up too much dude, I think it's just the unfortunate reality that it didn't sell well enough. I think if it had continued as the anthology they originally wanted it to be, it could have went pretty much indefinitely with the sky as the limit. Similar to Island though, it's just a tough market for this stuff. In that regard, the Top Cow idea would have been the better idea financially although without nearly as much potential. I do really like the 8 houses at war as a background thing though to tell self contained stories though.

I did tweet Graham recently and asked about it's future and he said he believed Kiem and Yorris would return at some point, I'm guessing to a point they can collect them as trades. He was tweeting as well that bar Kiem he wants to lay off collaborating for a bit to work on his own stuff.

Well, that's exactly the problem, IMO: the key difference is that Pax Americana is riffing on Watchmen for the purpose of saying something about Watchmen and its relationship with the superhero genre, which is not something I expect The Button or whatever follows from it to do more than half-assedly.

Okay so we're gonna discount the two page scene of a man beating another man to death while a distressed commenter asks "I mean, is this fun?"
Maybe it's not as blatant as Captain Atom tearing a dog open yet, but it's chapter one of four.

Towards the end of the fourth volume of Stormwatch. In a way, I am glad I read Authority first before Stormwatch. Knowledge (probably guesses) of what's left at the end of this run is adding a level of inevitability to the events that are already moving ahead at a breakneck speed. Can't stop reading, have to get back to it! Had to take a quick break beacuse, OMG, this panel right here.

I think that's the Aphra book, not a Rey book.

Finished Prophet volume 2. Really great book, it really just runs with what was established in Vol 1 but there is just a ton of awesome ideas in each issue, and Graham's writing really settles into a great flow. He really works best with Milonogiannis imo, who ends up drawing most of this volume. I will definitely be picking up the other books down the line. Also, I love this spread:

Also, fucking Troll of all people showed up at one point? I'm sure I had a Troll one shot as a kid.

$2.99 on the Dark Matter books means I'll at least try all of them twice.

Anyone see that new superhero universe imprint Lion Forge is launching next month? It's called catalyst prime.

Damn, what a great end to the 4th volume of Stormwatch. How does so much stuff happen in so few issues. Only one volume left :(

Any thoughts on King City? I'd like to try some more of his own drawn stuff down the line when I'm done Prophet but I dont think I could have multiple warheads in the house lol

King City is amazing. Fun world building and doesn't belabour its central plot point.

"DC Vows To Slow Down Twice Monthly Shipping, Won’t “Flood The Market” With Dark Matter"

D"C also promised that the books would have no variant covers, and that the $2.99 price would be ongoing, not introductory."

Kudos. will try them all. I think this brand is a good way to get new writers/artist on board after some of the A listers decide to leave.

Interesting! Thanks for sharing this tidbit.

My thoughts on it are that it is... very popular. I am ashamed I have yet to read it, though it's been sitting on my shelf for years. It's considered Graham's best by some.

DC does seem to have a good feel for what the market can support. Plus flooding comic shops with dark matter could do something funky stuff to gravity and FBP has already told that story.

Cheers for that guys, I'll take note of that one. I know it had a weird road to release through Tokyo pop etc so Im honestly a little ignorant to it, but I really like the small number of pages he's did himself so far in Prophet.

Finished the first four issues of Harbinger Renegades but I love the main villian is a hyper competent Black guy, who has a sympathetic backstory where you can easily see where's he's coming from.

I miss Jackson King and wish he was in the Wildstorm reboot.

Yeah. Maybe. I don't think the delays helped sales either. From what I remember it was a while between initial announcement and them finally ready to ship the first issues which I thought was to avoid delays in release schedule after that. And then it just fell off for ages.

Thanks for sharing that. Disappointing but understandable.

So Stormwatch v5 might be the shortest trade I've ever read at about 3 issues. An that was an... interesting... way to end the run.
The issues themselves were pretty well done but the final threat being The Aliens just felt weird.
Jenny, Hawksmoor, Shen-Li and Co also completely disappeared towards the end of the run. Was there some other comic running parallely? Did this one get cancelled or something? Everything felt so abrupt.

Seen this on twitter and assumed some of you would like to see it.

Yes indeedy.

Late, but I LOVED King City when I read it last year. It's really, really good! I prefer it to Multiple Warheads myself.

Bout to make some Dark Matter predictions based on creative teams and premises:

The Immortal Men(Tynion IV and Lee)- Most acclaimed title until it starts getting delays because of Jim Lee. But when it actually drops it fire 🔥 🔥🔥🔥.
New Challengers(Snyder and Kubert)- second most acclaimed title. Most successful and critically cosistent.
Silencer(Abnett and JRJR)- At best a solid title, and at worse a complete bore. Art will be an acquired taste.
Sideways(Didio,Jordan, and Rocafort)- 2nd best book when Immortal Men is being delayed. Overall most fun and hit title. Didio stops co-writing early on.
Damage(Venditti and Daniel)- rocky and generic beginning. Improves as it goes on and becomes a sleeper hit.

It's Dark Matter, though Black Matter would be fucking cool.

I noticed Vendettis Green Lantern Run got goos around the same time he left XO. His previous Green Lantern run was mediocre and seemed like the ideas he didn't use in XO.

How many issues until Rocafort starts delaying issues and then bails to a different book.

Lee delays will start with issue two and he will cut how many pages he does early on.

It sucks that he had to be the guy to replaced Geoff Johns but yeah that run was dull.

Also what Brandon Graham should i start with as filthy casual

Lee can't cut the pages because that defeats the whole purpose. Same as Rocafort.

Yea it's one of the craziest endings to a run before.

I read the first Flintstones trade paperback. It reprints the first six issues of the book.

People are ranting about how clever the book is, and I can totally see it. It's a smart and funny (sometimes sad and poignant) revision of a classic cartoon.

The problem is the book seems like a series of riffs on issues and less the story of two families in a stone age world. I don't get much of a sense of any of these characters as more than props to give color to various anecdotes about hot-button topics like commercialism, religion, etc.

This is probably overthinking a fun comic book. But, given the hype, I expected more than just "Here is a divisive issue. Here is what Fred Flintstone thinks of divisive issue. Here is a new divisive issue..."

So far, the best bits in the book center around Dino and the Flintstones' animal tools and appliances.
