Gbps broadband rolled out in Hong Kong - [Internet]

Submitted by monktallica on 4/25/2005 11:14:01 AM 5 Comments

Hong Kong Broadband Network has launched a new ultra fast service. The symmetric 1Gbps service costs approximately £112 per month, but obliterates the kind of speeds we are used to in the UK. We are eagerly waiting for the rollout of an 8Mbps service and consider that to be fast.

While this kind of speed is unlikely to be available in the UK for some time, the possibilities for its use are immense. Large publishers could offer direct download services for their games, online gaming could be revolutionised and TV channels could be streamed at MPEG-2 DVD quality. It is hard to actually imagine speeds reaching 1Gbps in the UK, but we can dream.

Holy Fark.

125MB/sec.

Wow.

When that's widespread, say goodbye almost entirely to physical media distribution IMO. Full games ready to play within minutes of release? Yes please.

Oh yeah, and porn. Streaming, hi-def porn.

edit - 3Mbit is the fastest I can get now, for €45. That's a massive improvement in a very short period of time..I was on 56k 18 months ago, and broadband wasn't available here.

"Sir, the BTEFNET tracker does not appear to be responding to our requests."
"Very well. Mr. Data. Launch a class 2 probe to investigate"
"Sir! Object decloaking! It's the MPAA!"
"Tell them they have no jurisdiction here and go back to America"

Man, I miss good trek.

And that's some seriously amazing bandwidth, which has really two purposes-cable TV services and piracy of copyright material. The cable and content providers will make more money than they lose in piracy, so it's a good deal for them. They'll still whine about the phantom billions of dollars lost in revenue per year, though.

One question, can your computer install that fast? Sure the information is hitting your computer at 125 megs a second, but can your computer install to the hard drive fast enough? My computer starts thinking really hard at 300kbps.

Certainly, there's a bandwidth issue here-this can be addressed through compression hardware at the point of acquisition of data until the hardware itself can catch up. If you can't feed it to disks or the bus fast enough, then your only option is to reduce the dataflow to the point where the disks and/or system bus *can* keep up with the data rate.

Ahh I see. Then Xbox live would be fine, if the internet signal comes faster than it can handle.
