Commodore 64 appreciation thread

You mean SID surely :P

OK, hands up, who here has SIDPlayer or SIDPlug (Browser plugin) installed? If not, get to it! pronto! :D

*puts hands up*

Bringing back the memories, anyone remember this mag?

compute2.jpg

Some even scanned a couple entire issues

C64 and Vic20 wasnt complete until you typed in those 10 page games from Compute. Or maybe thats just me :D

Holy crap, I remember that magazine. I also remember spending a lot of time playing obscure 'sports'-like games that I would never play normally. Epic Games, Hardball, Pitstop, etc.

Didn't that mag come with like a 100 line program so you could make your own pseudo-game?

Without a C64, I'm not sure I would be here typing this or even have an interest in games at all. I grew up with it, started playing C64 games when I was about 5, it basically created my interest in and fascination with games. :)

I trust all of you guys have the GameBase64 collection? 3 CDs, every C64 game ever made, absolutely lovely browser application, look for it on BT or usenet or wherever.

great game, but goddamn the load times were horrendous. horrendous for the c64 even. that tank went so slooowwwww.

Does anyone remember Project: Firestart? It came out pretty late in the C-64's life, but it was the first game I'd ever played that was genuinely scary.

:faps to thread:

C64 is definitely = <3

Pirates! is still my all-time favorite game, and there were just so many other classics, most of which have been mentioned here already...

Space Taxi, Impossible Mission, Summer/Winter/World, California Games, Great Giana Sisters, Hardball!, 4th & Inches, Skate or Die!, Law of the West, Flip Flop, Qix, HERO, Toy Bizarre, Bruce Lee, Conan... the list goes on and on.

Unfortunately, my original C64 won't display an image for some reason. It loads and I can type command prompts to boot games (LOAD "*",8,1), but no image onscreen. Dunno if a part burned out or what.

I always liked that loading screen for GI Joe with Duke holing the floppy disk completely wrong. I can't remember now, but I think he had his thumb on the exposed part or something.

Always good to see more Wasteland love. :) Damn, I'd hope that Brian Fargo and InXile sublicense Wasteland's name and content from EA for a remake on computer and/or console...

I sure do....it was Resident Evil long before Resident Evil. I laugh every time I hear the Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil debate, Firestart beat them both, it came out in 89.

I remember a couple good games late in the C-64's life:

Firestart
Caveman Ugh-lympics
Kings of the Beach
King's Bounty

But where is the Cinemaware love in this thread?

Rocket Ranger and Three Stooges for life!!!

And Questron is still one of my favorite old school RPGs.

Good God, that sounds like gaming bliss...

This thread is really bringing back a flood of memories! I've been fanatical about games my whole life, but no system has ever had me as enamored as the C-64. I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning on a regular basis; there was just a feeling of excitement and immersion that I've not fully experienced since.

I was consistently amazed by the some of the animation and sound that designers were able to get out of that hardware. Epyx in particular employed some incredible animators and musicians. The first time I booted up Skate or Die and heard the wailing electric guitar, I almost passed out.

Epyx also created the Fast Load cartridge, which was a Godsend. I could actually load up Bruce Lee in under 4 hours...

The Commodore also introduced me to adventure games - Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken are two of my all time favorites. Zak still features some of the most memorable moments and clever puzzles I've ever experienced in an adventure game. Great memories.

I think I'm getting misty eyed...

Project Firestart was f'n awesome.

Cinemaware was amazing company, but I associate them more with Amiga than with C64. Wings was one of the best, most atmospheric games EVER made. All you GBA owners should go out and buy the excellent conversion.

Impossible Mission, Jumpman and Jumpman Jr, Frankie Goes to Hollywood...great games.

I loved Adventure Construction Set and all those early EA games (Larry Bird, etc.)

I played a lot of Zorro (from Microsoft Games), too.

I also digged the Scott Adams Graphic Marvel Comics adventure games with the Hulk, Spider-man.

Just flicking through the pages of lemon64.com bringing back so many memories.

And finally New York City, GTA of the 80's! :D

Donkey Kong on the C64 had Great graphics, it looked just like the arcade version or very close to it. It is a lot better than the NES version. I remember playing it over at my friend house thinking I wish I had a C64 at that time.
