I've never been very fond of Compaq but this deal seems too good to pass up, especially since I want a laptop to complement my PC.

OfficeDepot (in store only) has the Compaq Presario R3000Z Notebook Computer Package with AMD Athlon XP-M Processor 2800+ for $680 - $280MIR = $400. Thanks Vster.

• 256MB DDR memory
• 40GB hard drive
• 8x DVD-ROM drive
• Windows® XP Home

Can be upgraded:

$35 to a 60GB HardDrive
$55 to a DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
$65 to 512MB RAM
$85 to an AMD Athlon 64 3000+

Any laptop-savvy GAFFERS please give me some advice on this deal, is it worth it? And is it possible to access wireless internet networks (such as at starbucks) with this (a la Intel Centrino)?

I saw this over the weekend too and thought it seemed like a good deal. I didn't look too closely at the details on video card, and I'd want wireless g on it. I'd almost surely jump up to 512MB or RAM too, but all in all, seems like a great deal for a laptop. I really don't need a new laptop, but I've been considering it too. If only I hadn't just bought a new car, and was just 2 weeks away from the PSP launch. :)
