Competitive Gaming. Is it Dead?

Maybe a controversial take but I think these genres like BR and Extraction at hurting it for many who simply want to just "pvp".

I'll try to explain the best I can, as a dude who has been PvPing since probably most around here been alive not a dig or a flex just a reality that I'm a fossil lol I been shooting fools for about 35 years and that main core gameplay still gets me to this day, just go in and fight I love it.

With BR and Extraction I feel it alienates a huge audience like myself, I feel that there's just a slew of players like myself that sit back and think damn I want to pvp without all the other bullshit.

Now I know there's a small portion of guys that want to flex so hard that BR and extraction are so hardcore and they require skill etc.. Sure I'm not denying that to win those modes you gotta be on point but that's where it all falls apart. Most pvp fans don't want that, like for example the premise of 2 teams fighting means you're at a 50% chance of winning or losing, good odds. Doesn't mean I want to just walk over my opposition, there's times maybe the team carries me but wins aren't far and few in between you can play and maybe some nights go 8-2, maybe 5-5, maybe 3-7, the point is you are able to go head to head without it being a SUPER frustrating thing.

All these new popular shooters to me have the SUPER FUCKING frustrating loop of dying and you're gone from BR, or losing your shit in extraction... I don't want that nor need it, so I'm able to easily pass..

If that's the trends then I think that's what has put a massive hole in pvp because it's too much, I think all these very tiny subset of pvp games with super niche death penalties even tho they have audiences, is what has put a massive void for many pvp players like myself.

If more standard pvp games hit the pike I think there's a greater chance of success but that's just me.

Ok but then what about games like battlefield diving off a cliff after launch, or something like Splitgate? Shit even halo infinite.

BF arguably has the most going on but it doesn't seem like arena shooters matter at the slightest. No one is lining up to make them either.

Like I said above it's because the fans ask for stuff and they sorta don't give it to them, like server browser and classes to be classes, large maps etc.. I think the opening numbers show there's a huge crowd but the devs don't always just give the fans what they want so they bounce.

I think BF6 opening numbers shows that people want to rock but they all have preferences and when the devs sorta hold back and still not make the games how people want they bail, those numbers are undeniable imo

I will always love fighting games. Its always been a niche genre but for what its worth the relatively small community is passionate. Even still, no i dont believe competitive gaming is dying. Dota, league still thrives. Valorant still thrives, even smaller games like Predecessor (spiritual successor to PS4's Paragon) has a strong community. I think this is just a calming down before inevitably GTA6 online drops and PVP will be alive and we'll even more so than it is now.

I think that overall people who dont really like pvp tend to have blinders on and dont really see what's available. I assume the opposite is also true. A couple of buddies of mine who love pvp (literally will not play a game that doesnt have it) make fun of me for playing Crimson Desert. They say shit like "Playing a single player games in 2026 is diabolical".

Like....really bro? I like both pvp and pve games. What's crazy is how they deny themselves the opportunity to experience different kinda games. They never go out of their comfort zone and try something new. That's what's diabolical to me

No. There's a lot of games that have championships. Hell, EVO is a few months away

Also, the whole philosophy of speedrun is based on competitiveness, and this will last until the very end of the world

Yall have it backwards. Games designed around high skill cap play are the ones that tend to be successful. Games designed for casual retards more often than not bomb out.
